Kilmore Quay Paint-Out (X-Posted PA Forum)
We had a group paint-out at the little fishing village of Kilmore Quay yesterday (26/2/12). It can be a nightmare to paint there mid-week, because the subject matter has a tendency to leave half-way through the painting, but the boats tend to mostly stay put on Sundays. It was disappointingly cool and dull, compared to the previous day which was warm and sunny and felt almost like summer. Still, when on a paint-out, you just get on with it.
For my first one, I found myself getting interested in the negative space between these boats, with the occasional ripples adding further interest.
In-Between, Kilmore Quay
(14" x 11" Oil on Board)
For my second, I liked the painting challenge of these rusty old fishing boats. I tried to "draw" accurately but not tightly.
Old-Timers, Kilmore Quay
(11" x 14" Oil on Board)
I've got some photos (good ones for a change!) of both scenes in my blog, if anyone wants a look.

This is good work and I love some of the pieces you have for sale...lots of good light work. Thanks for sharing.

Michael, you can never tell if it's a dull day from your work. You bring so much light and colour into your pieces, I'm often amazed when I see photos of the actual day. Always wonderful work.

Thanks Dwayne. Too many for sale and not enough buyers at the moment unfortunately!

Thanks Marty. I took the liberty on this occasion of punching the highlights up a little! It was really dull IRL!

Very nicely done Michael! I just love those glints of light reflecting off the water!

Nice glitter in number one Michael, and I like the colors of the second. The boat edges seem extra hard and soft all at once

Thanks Marcus. Those highlights are always a bit of a challenge, all too easy to overdo it. Hopefully, I held back just enough this time.

Thanks Brian. A lot of what I do when I paint "en plein air" is intuitive. But things like edges are always in my thoughts when I paint.
