Converting an image to threshold

Hello everyone,

I often use Photoshop's threshold filter to convert an image to black and white shapes. It helps me with composition and determining balance / weight. However, I do this with Photoshop's default setting (on my computer) of 128. How does one determine the correct setting (128 vs 150 or 175, etc)?

Thanks
Nell
