Some artists like using the orange wash, some also softly rub it off to smooth the look where the wash may have ran. It adds a realistic look to the sky as the orange peeks through in places like yours did in your mural. Like the last glimpse reflection of the sun going down or coming up, maybe some moisture collecting as storm clouds. I read that the wash lends a fascinating sense of atmosphere in landscapes and seascapes paintings. Also it tones down colors.
Also after I painted animals putting a wash on the fur made the fur look more realistic as the wash seemed to add depth to the fur, (usually the wash or tint was with burnt sierra, taking something with text so if you covered the text with the tint or wash the text would show through by adding a touch of water until the text was readable.)
