Thomas Hart Benton articles on composition

Does anyone know if Thomas Hart Benton's articles on composition that were published in 1926-27 in Arts magazine are available anywhere? Online, reprints, or included in another work or something? I'm very curious to read the originals since I've heard so much about them from his biographies.

Re: Thomas Hart Benton articles on composition

A library near here has the the magazine in bound form going all the way back to the beginning (March 1926). But I was hoping there was a format a little easier to work with than going to the library and making photocopies (which I might have to do if nothing else comes up).

Jbrisbin
unfortunately I don't have the answers you seek.
If it comes to you having to make photocopies, please do.
I've never heard of Benton, but due to your enthusiasm I'm sure everyone here would really apprcieate it.

Good luck!

I too don't have the you require, but my online search did find footnote that mentioned the 1927 article(s). As someone who is interested in his work, and particularly interested in composition I too would like to read his papers if at all possible. Please keep the group informed of any progress.

Looks like a trip to the basement of the library with a pocket full of quarters is in store!

I'll try and get as high-quality a copy/scan as I can and post back here if I can manage to get something useful for others.

Here is a link to a bound volume of the series of five magazines for sale by an antique bookseller:

$150 is pricey...

If you have a local university library you might want to see if they can get it on interlibrary loan.

Yes, $150 is too rich for me. :/ But I'm planning to go to the library this week with a stack of quarters and make photocopies. I'll try and scan them and see if they're good enough quality to make anything out of from the scanned image.

Re: Thomas Hart Benton articles on composition

I found a person's blog site where she discusses some about Benton's compositional style and how it influenced other's works.
