Have you looked at the art of the sketchbook in general? Don' know if this getting away from the point of your thread, but I just love the individuality of the sketchbook, the more 'creative' the better for me.
I try to encourage my students to use the sketchbook as an artwork in its own right; coloured, textured, layered pages or bits stuck in, staining, tearing, cutting etc
i suppose this could also come under the umbrella of journal art and altered book?
