Lightbulb Different Strokes September 2011

Welcome to the September 2011 edition of Different Strokes.

If you would like to host a Different Strokes, please see the Schedule thread here - it is a sticky near the top of the main forum page.

Please read the guidelines below carefully.

GUIDELINES:
On the first of each month a reference photo (or photos) will be posted in a thread entitled "Different Strokes".

Artwork can be any size on any surface but MUST be acrylic.
Each member interested in taking the challenge will create a painting using the chosen reference(s) (whole or cropped)
and on the 20th of each month participants will upload their interpretation of the reference for discussion within this thread, finished or not.

PLEASE DO NOT UPLOAD WORK TO THE THREAD BEFORE THE 20TH OF THE MONTH.**

At the end of the month the thread /discussion will be closed and a new challenge will begin.

**Please note, the single 'reveal' date is chosen so that we do not influence each other with our individual interpretations ......
that's the whole point of it being called 'Different Strokes'!

THIS MONTH'S REFERENCES

I called her Putih means White a stray cat with her reflections who loved to visit but never allowed me to touch.

The family of stray cats at my neighbour’s house, when they were younger.

Please click on those images for high res.

An extra challenge for this month if you are willing; Pointillism
link to Pointillism by George Seurat and other artists

And link to sample of images in Pointillism

Enjoy your painting, be creative, discuss without visuals, in this thread if you wish.

HAVE FUN everyone and hope you like this month's challenge!

Hi Dewi, I remember doing some kittens you put up in the WDE a few months ago, are these the same ones? I would like to give them a go this month, see you on the 20th.

Thanks so much Dewi but having painted a 'whole ginger cat' last month, I may just crop one of these and try, try, try to paint eyes like you do!!!

Re: Different Strokes September 2011

This is such a stimulating presentation Dewi! So sorry I'm not able to join in as we are away all month but look forward to seeing the results. As a non-cat-lover (sorry!) I find them really creepy ; I wonder whether anyone will depict them like that??? Best wishes everyone.

Re: Different Strokes September 2011

Thanks for hosting, Dewi! I've never painted an animal before, so this will be interesting. And, it will be good practice so that I can paint a portrait of my own kitty, Suki!

Hi Dewi, these cats are adorable. But I need to finish my DS from August first. If that happens then I'll work on this. Cheers!

I've never done an animal before except for a watercolor rooster, so this looks like a huge challenge. I'm going to attempt it.

Re: Different Strokes September 2011

I think I will try this, as well! I'm interested to see how I decide to do it and how it turns out! Haha... I'm not a cat fan either... but, I'm stoked to try my hand at it!

I'll give it a shot - not real good with animals, though.

Re: Different Strokes September 2011

Hi there!
Thanks for the beautiful pictures, Dewi, and the added challenge of poitillism. I was not too fond of cats either, but then my youngest begged for one and we gave it a try. It's true what they say:umknown is unloved! I now simply adore cats!
Happy painting everyone,
Charri

Hi Dewi, Thanks so much for hosting. This is just what I need to get my muse working again after having been pretty sick. I love those eyes in the first photo and will give it a try.

Re: Different Strokes September 2011

Hi everyone

Glad that some of you willing to try painting cat/s, I never own a cat too but painting them are quite enjoyable like Charri/cfo have said on post #11

Hi Christine, those kittens you've painted were the third generation, their mother is the tri colours sitting on the left most in the second photo.

Hope this cat/s will bring back your muse Chammi.

Happy painting everyone, lets have fun
