Well I think youve done a pretty good job of painting your son. Th only thing that pulls my eye is the reflected light on his lower neck on right side dwon. If you squint your eyes, that value is close to the value of the dark in the ear. But this is just me.You have done a nice job of losing the back edge of the his head, Your son sure has the nice long eyelashes !

Great contrast, skin tone, captured the expression well. Good job.

Re: my sons portrait from a picture

The portrait itself is excellent; what should be changed is the color of the background that, being reddish, reduces the brilliance and cleanness of the skin tones.
Make a small test: alternatively cover and discover with your hands, at some distance from the painting, the background; you will see the skin tones appear more pleasant, when the background is covered.

Beautiful rendering of your son. It is very interesting how you have changed the coloring of the clothing and background; this portrait goes from a 2011 context to a 19th century context, just by those alterations of background hues and values. Context is so important. What was your aim in making those changes?

Re: my sons portrait from a picture

karenlee In reply to your question about the changing the colors from the oriiginal I thought the picture had too many different colors and distracting the face [focal point] and I like to keep colors to a minimum. As you say the context is is not modern, its probably influenced by the old masters. If you look closer you might see i was using small dabs of color in places i find it easier than mixing colors on the palette.donbob
