They have a huge selection of photos and you can search by word, region and even by color!! They have large size photos for download if you need really good resolution. I love morguefile!

Re: Public Domain Photos
Not creative commons but free access to painters.
No electronic or mechanical repro as a base for a painting.
Specify the source at the back of the canvas.
And tell me. http://www.flickr.com/photos/naturep...7622196664587/

Re: Public Domain Photos
What about Presidential photos? Are there sites for that? What are the rules?

Re: Public Domain Photos
Irrespective of the rights free of the sites hosting the images we have to be careful because a lot of galleries, exhibitions and competitions do not allow work that is not from your own original source from theonset. as in must be from your life viewing or photos or sketches. This always seems harsh to me as I like to paint animals and we can't all afford to go off on safari or afford the camera equipment needed even if I wasn't disabled and was healthy enough to go off on these adventures.
As beautiful as he is there is a limit to how many times I can paint my cat.
It is hard to take photos in zoos due to cages.bars in the pictures, or even worse as in my local zoo, they are all behind heavy glass which reflects myself back taking the photos and I usually get more of me and the camera than a workable photo of the critter...and not to mention the glass isb't always clean enough. So what are we to do>? Maybe the Pros want to keeo certain genres to themselves all those with the health and money to go searching......
I also like racing cars, but again unless I go I can't get these...
SO here is a question.....
How would we be if we take photos of animals/racing cars/people off the TV... WE have taken the photos so they are our work.. we have had to set up and use out skills to get workable shots... The Tv puts it out as a moving show,... once it has been broadcast does that make the show itself public? Our photos are of our own TV in the lounge with the ramaging lions or Grand Prix on in it when we took it.... could we then sell/display as our own?

Re: Public Domain Photos
Taking shots from the TV is an interesting case. The programmes are obviously copyrighted but you are composing the photo.

Re: Public Domain Photos
Please remember you CAN NOT display them for public use or sell the artwork. This what I was told last night in art class. Also Taking snippets from videos is also copyrighting.

Re: Public Domain Photos
I have seen people post on Facebook pages, works done of famous people and have asked how they got hold of the references that they used. I have not had a response. I suspect they may be using photos from public domain. A couple of years ago I saw a CP work done for the Patchings Art competition that actually won a prize of a famous singer Lamar. Not credit was mentioned to an original photographer. That was not only exhibited publicly but also won an prize in a competition. If we are not allowed to paint famous people without permission it should be enforced at competition level. We'd all love to paint the famous. How else are we to get shots of things like motor Racing when we can't afford to go or have press- style cameras to get close up action shots.
Hence the TV.

I'd do some research to be sure. But...I *think* if it was broadcast over the public channels (not cable or pay-to-access) channels it's in the public domain once it broadcasts. That's why VCR's are legal. But...I'm not a lawyer, so this is just my understanding. I do know there have been people selling copies of old television shows on eBay, and I *think* it's legal because they were broadcast for the public to view.
