A Day at the South Slob (X-Posted PA Forum)
We had a group paint-out at the South Slob, Wexford yesterday (the South Slob is a low-lying, marshy area, frequented in winter by migratory birds and the occasional mad artist!). It was a relatively good January day, with no rain and good sunshine in the afternoon - it was only about 8C (45F) though with a cold North-Westerly wind. The area is very flat - actually looks very like Holland - and it can be difficult to find anything interesting to paint other than the obvious. For my first one, I stuck to the "obvious", settling for the old pumphouse, mainly because I managed to get a sheltered spot. But it presented a fairly dramatic silhoutte against the winter sky.

There were dramatic skies in the afternoon, so I settled for this sky study for my second painting.

I have photos of both scenes on my blog if anyone wants a look.

Very good! I like how you've kept the values close

Thanks Dwayne. Funny think is I hadn't even noticed that, and one would expect to get a greater value range at this time of year, even at mid-day. But I tend to remain fairly true to observed values, so maybe it was an unusually bright January day.

Both are fabulous and full of atmosphere. The second has the edge, for me.

I love the way you always take the ordinary and make it extraordinary. Beautiful palette! Your color harmony is lyrical, indeed! You are such an inspiration to a rookie like me.

Hi Michael,
I like that bit of warm light on the right side wall in the first painting. Gives the painting a nice bit of interest other than the obvious, the pumphouse.
I think the misty look into the distance in the second piece is well painted. Your clouds in that one have a nice full bodied look to them and the sun hitting the small top area works really well.

Beautiful work Michael. I like the soft feel of the pump house and the Winter Sky is lovely.
