Martre Sable?

ISABEY Watercolor brush PURE MARTRE SABLE #14 New! I was looking at brushes on ebay, and saw this one. I couldn't find much on the internet about it, but bought it anyway because it came with an Escoda 1212 pointed round, which I KNEW I'd love. Well, I am not really happy with the Isabey, but maybe it's because I don't understand what it's for. I wondered if anyone knows anything about it??? Maybe it's an oil brush? The Escoda is a dream come true, by the way.

Any ideas?

Re: Martre Sable?

I don't know very much about the 6225 series, but I saw a similar auction on eBay a while back, and tried to find more information about them. It appears that they are red sable brushes, not the highest quality kolinsky sable line. They are designed for use with watercolor.

Here's the link to the info at the Isabey website. (And it's very little info!)

Thank you! I'll just have to chalk this one up to experience, I guess. Not a very good first impression of Isabey, makes me nervous to pay that much for another one.

I like Isabey's quill mop brushes, although mine are pretty old and the quality may not be the same as it used to be, so don't take my word as a recommendation. I have a few other Isabey brushes that were highly recommended to me, but I never really clicked with them. It's not that they were bad brushes; they just weren't anything special.

I'm also a fan of Isabey's quill mops. They maintain a good point and hold a lot of water.

I have a red sable and a kolinsky and I like the sable better than the kolinsky.

Personal preference I guess.

I don't have any experience with the red sables, but it comes from a totally different animal.
If you don't relly like it at all, you can sell it back on ebay.
It sucks but it takes some money to figure out what you like and what you don't!

Re: Martre Sable?

Thirding the rec on the Squirrel mops. Wonderful brushes.

I also recently purchased a cheaper version of the squirrel mop from Abbamart on eBay. It was squirrel and horsehair. Holds water just as good as a squirrel mop, but it had a responsive 'spring' that the pure squirrel doesn't have. Now I'm wanting more of the squirrel & horsehair mop.
