River Bend

This one's been painted thrice. I painted over an old canvas, but didn't finish when I went over labor day. Returned today and the light was totally different. Wasn't much left by the time I was done. No shortage of paint on this one.
9x12 oil on board. C&C Welcome. Reference photo attached. The white spots on the distant trees is glare. The white spots on the near river are painted .

Very nice painting! I like the way you use the warm and cool colors. You have a nice collection of paintings in your website.

Re: River Bend
Good one Brian. Great assortment of greens. A little more contrast would really make this pop. (Our old friend, Mr. Contrast ).

Re: River Bend
Tang, thanks, I did try to remember the warms and cools in the right places.
Wyn: Indeed! I was very concious of my values and spent extra time to make that tree on the left extra extra dark. (I even thought about using black! But I didn't have it with me. ) I can see from the photo I need to maybe go back in and add some super dark shadows to the foreground. I used the same mix there, but it doesn't read like it.

Re: River Bend
Wonderful painting, Brian.
One little thing: the lone, bare tree trunk in the distant tree line - my eye keeps zeroing in on that. I think it's too close to center, and maybe shouldn't be such a strong dark. I'd move it to the right, or maybe leave it out completely. But I still like the painting!

This reads so perfectly that I feel like I'm standing in the tall reeds and grasses. Very nice painting!

Re: River Bend
I love this painting, Brian. Fantastic job with the distances and distant tree line. The backlighting/dark shadow of the foreground tree on the left is fabulous. There's something about the way the paint adheres and the lights pop when you have the opportunity for a second session. Those advantages really show themselves here.

Re: River Bend
Brian, this one is really good! You are getting better all the time. Nice separation between light and shadow--value is so important in painting realistically.

Re: River Bend
Brian---I'm an infrequent visitor here anymore, your painting has really come along. I don't know about deeper shadows in the foreground, but what you might try is lighter, warmer lights in the foreground (near bank), and/or darkening/cooling the right (far) bank a little, as the photo shows it in shade. If you likewise darken the water near that bank, it will help to emphasize the water that is reflecting the sunlight. I think that will give you the pop you are looking for.
Still, it's a lovely painting.
