Isn't playing with new colors fun??!!

All the beautiful pictures in the showcase threads really lit a fire under me to order some of the special colors that I had never tried.

I even kinda winced at the prices of some of them, but ordered them anyway because of all the beautiful, inspirational pieces you guys are making out of them.

Well, I LOVE them all. I am having such a good time using these new colors. It has really helped with my creativity and cleared out my mental cabin fever.

I ordered opal yellow, mosaic green, vetrofond chardonnay and some others. I played with the opal yellow for only ten minutes (Made one single bead) and got online to order more of it in case it disappears forever.

I love the way it holds the silver foil. The silver balls up beautifully on the surface, but the color of the glass stays stable. Just a dream to work with. Much stiffer than I expected though, from an opaque. Also played with the mosaic green...what a gorgeous deep green. I love this stuff, but only got to play a little. I didn't order more of this though. Most of the things I would use it for would be tiny thin stringer amounts and I figure I could pull 1,000 stringers from the 1/2# of mosaic green that I bought.

The vetrofond chardonnay is beautiful on the rod, but rather non-descript in a bead. It comes out really pale. I do love it though, but it isn't awe-inspiring or anything.

Has anyone else gotten to try a color that is new to them lately? It really made a world of difference to me. If you are stuck in a rut....order a new color. It will haul you right out!

I'm with you...opal yellow is one of my favorites!

When I ws in Tucson, I bought a bunch of the red copper green amd, to my surprise, it actually keeps some of the red ! Looks like green when you work it, but on ivory , comes out of the kiln with green/terracotta with black edging! I'll take a photo of the winestopper I made with it and post it !

Re: Isn't playing with new colors fun??!!

I ordered a whole bunch of BE sheet glass to cut into strips, some are colors I've never knew existed. I think these are their "new" colors. Some are the ones that aren't available in rod form, but in the Colorstix.

Can't wait to get 'em, and I will post some pictures of what I make.

Moretti ink blue and dark rose are on their way too, never tried those either!

I've been making beads with Vetrofond dark ivory, ink blue and copper green today! All three colours are new to me.
I've also bought some dark lavender but I haven't tried it yet, think I'll wait until I get my Minor. It's way too easy too soot the paler trans colours on my current torch as I'm so impatient....

I tried *mixing* a new color using Drew Fritts recipes - I went for "Antique Rose" but I must have done something wrong because it came out looking like ink blue! LOL!

If you encase the red copper green you get a beautiful pink color. One of the ladies here posted that months ago and I played around with it over the weekend. Wonderful surprises with that color.

Re: Isn't playing with new colors fun??!!

Saucy, the floral bead in my tiny head has a base of silver pink. It can go from a great neutral/tan color to a lovely "old" pink look.. I think you'll like it!
You have to let it cool almost to the point of cracking then let the flame gently touch the top edge of the bead as you turn it in the flame... Yummy!
Let's see your results!
Snooty, that sounds like a great color anyway!
Can anyone point me to Drew's color mixes???? Hi Drew, glad to "see" you here!!!!
Hugs everyone!

Re: Isn't playing with new colors fun??!!

Ive had some fun with new colours (well new to me..lol) as well. I bought a bunch of new colours from a beadmeet here in bris on the weekend..I got some Lauscha purple (the old recipe..yum) some some sage green and some powder pink among others. I made a bead on a black base with the powder pink..EDP and the lauscha purple and the powder pink turned out a lovley coral colour..Like the old batches of moretti coral that where more peachy pink than orange.
Cant wait to get down there and play some more.

Jacqui - Drew's
new colors are here - but the actual recipes are in the book, which is a wonderful book, not just for marble makers, and WELL worth the price!

Re: Isn't playing with new colors fun??!!

Grab some of the 791903 Vetrofond Chocolate Brown Striking Red . If you work it cool it stays transparent and it's the most gorgeous shade of dark ruby! There is nothing chocolate brown about it. Apparently the original rods they tested turned chocolate brown, but the rods I got are a translucent light red that turns out dark ruby transparent. Watch out though, the rods are about 12 or 13mm in diameter and are very stiff. Kind of a PITA, but what a gorgeous color!

Etch the chardonnay - it looks like lemon sherbet. That might help your creative juices.
