Post Gallerys representation Fee???

Hello,
I am considering representation at an upscale Soho Gallery (Agora Gallery) that requires a substantial rep fee just to get started at their gallery, is this normal? I am currently represented by three local galleries and I've never heard of a rep fee before. Am I being naive or is this normal?? please help

This is only normal in vanity galleries like this one. No commericial sales gallery will charge you an up front or rep fee. They make money from the sale of your work. Suggest you keep looking.

Thanks for the advice guys and gals, sounds like good advice too. Its not fair to require a fee for artists to display their work, I just found out it would be 10' x 10' of display space too, What a rip off, Thanks, Shaver

Having seen their space, and knowing their practices, I can tell you there is nothing upscale or anything else good about Agora. It's a ripoff. You're wise to stay away.

not No But He.. No. This Is Robery. Most Laget Gallery's Around Here Charge Anywhere From 15% To 25%<<<<< Better Galleries.Don't Let Them Rob You Hun. The Only Artist Iv'e Ever Known Who Was Charged This Kind Of Money Was Elvis Paid The Col.50%. But Belive Me That Man Promoted Elvis In Such A Way He Earned His Money.I Know It Was A Differant Art But Still. If They Work This Hard For You.IE National Adds, World Wide Promotions,National Television Spots. Then Yes It Might Be Worth It. But To Charge You 50% Plus A Fee For You'r Hard Work To Set On There Wall While They Set In There Gallery And Smile Is Robbery. And Artist Who Except This GRRRRRRRRRR.Remember If We As Artist Stand Togather And Find This Totally Unexceptable Then They Would Have To Change Or Go Out Of Buisenss. After All They Need Us. Not Visa Versa!!!!!!!!!!!

I happened to see the Agora gallery myself last weekend. I was in that building to see the opening show in a REAL upscale gallery (relative of a friend of a friend of my girlfriend... got that?), and while I was wandering the halls in search of a bathroom, noticed that there were several other galleries on that floor, the Agora being one of them. While it's a decent looking space that might get walk-in traffic from the neighbors (hey, I got there), the quality of the work struck me.. actually slapped me, it was so bad. They had as many artists as they could cram in there, and it was all quite insipid; I'm talking the clumsy stuff that strived to be representational, let alone the jarring abstracts & expressionistic stuff. Shaver, while I think the majority your work I've seen here is quite good and "gallery ready", I got the distinct impression that they'd take anyone who'd fork over the dough, and that any "selection process" they might claim is a sham.
