glue crackle and other crackle effects

Been reading about a white glue crackle process. Today was my day to give it a whirl. So, see above. Easy to do but a bit touchy here and there. Lay down a base of color. Dry. A layer of white glue and almost immediately a top layer of color. Stand back in amazement.

Re: glue crackle

Interesting. You say "almost immediately", so does that mean right on top of the wet glue?

Re: glue crackle

I have done the same thing with gum arabic, dissolve crystals, paint and dry background, coat with gum and dry, paint top coat.
Needs a spray of sealer on top as gum stays active.

Re: glue crackle

I used glue crackle to good effect in a painting last year - a little tricky to control, but a wonderful effect!

Re: glue crackle

That's a really awesome technique. I am going to have to give that a try. Thanks for the info!!

I'd also be interested in the gum arabic one. I have some left over from my art school days and seeing it go to good use as opposed to sitting in a box would be nice. Gonna see if I can pull up anything on you tube.

Re: glue crackle

when using the gum arabic the top coat of colour has to be done with the least strokes as possible or you will pull up the gum, so big brush and one stroke over, the different crackle finish is created by how much paint is in the brush.

Re: glue crackle

Left to right

The first crackle is a single element crackle. It makes it look like a painting with a cracked varnish. Hard to photograph.

Next was the 2 part crackle process by Perfetto. I uses a white first layer that dries clear. The second layer is a white, thick material which can be altered with acrylic pigments.

3, was a white glue crackle. A layer of white glue was laid down and while wet it was quickly coated with color.

4, Gum arabic . This turned out to be the most difficult. It is very tricky as it can be brushed over one time. Any do over and it isn't going to work.

Unfortunately, today my video camera decided to stop working so I am going to have to research a new one. Then reshoot the entire process.

Yes, but it isn't the same. Horse of a different color.
