new to painting. WIP
hey yall. so im very new to painting, this is like my 3rd one. i gave up on acrylics before pretty fast i guess just because i have to do so much drawing its hard to make the time for painting.
im a professional tattoo artist and about a month ago i broke my hand, so not being able to work or even hold a pencil i was kind of forced back into tryin out a brush again, so ive started a couple paintings and im at the point now that im kind scared to touch them cause im not totally sure what to do from her haha. but i figured i would post them and keep up with my progress if people were interested in seeing how they turn out..annnnd maybe helping me if i had some questions, lol.
one thing i know about painting, is i like starting them, aloooot more than i like finishing them!!! blocking things in has been fun..but trying to refine things from here is whats getting tricky. anyway heres what i have so far, drawn on the canvas with a sharpie then painted. thanks for looking!

I like the composition and format very much and look forward to seeing some colour glazes added!
Would love to see this image in a larger size though - images can be up to 800pixels either dimension.
How big is your painting? Is it on canvas?

That bird has character! It reminds me of an embroidery on the back of a Chinese dressing gown!
Wondered if there is a bit more of the top of the head as the eye really pops out but maybe this bird is like that anyway?
Super detail and actually I like this in the grey tones. I'm sure it will also be great in colour. Very attractive and a great start.

hey man it is never too late to start. bob tyrell, one of the best tattoo artists in the world and by far hands down the best black and grey portrait artist in the world didnt start tattooing untill he was almost 40. if you are interested in the craft and have a strong portfolio theres no reason you couldnt get an apprenticeship if you really wanted one!

Re: new to painting. WIP
thanks everybody! i appreciate the time and am glad to hear you guys like it so far.
what is a glaze?
my biggest concern is all the tight refining of things. this is where my complete ignorance to technique is killin me. is there a good database, or tutorial, video i could buy, book anyone recommends..something that covers the basics? painting for dummies? lol. i really want to figure out a good technique for a smooth blend, and for a nice fine consistant line, i find these both very difficult to do.
i find another thing thats a big discouraging going from tattooing to paint, is its so hard to do things clean and crisp with a brush. im used to tattooing nice thin lines and running right over them with colour, the thickness of paint makes the medium so different.
if anyone is interested, this is a similar style piece i did on skin. its a little more graphic, less realistic, but it has a similar feel and is kind of what im going for here, only with a little more realism with the painting as it fits the medium better.
thanks again everyone!
