"Napoleon" - Collared Sunbird

After years of working in scratchboard, which a few of you may be are familiar with, I started an oil painting class in January. The first painting was ok, but not worth sharing here However I am really quite pleased with how #2 came out. This one is on clayboard and sized 18"x24". The title is "Napoleon".

This past summer I had the pleasure to spend most of a month in South Africa. This is from one of my images taken over there of a male collared sunbird. Sunbirds are South Africa's version of our hummingbirds (but don't hover) - feed mostly on nectar from flowers and most are only 2" to 4" in size. Though only about 3" tall, the collared sunbird males are very territorial of their patch of flowers and will chase other birds off, even ones that are much larger (hence the title).

All C&C welcome and appreciated, as I am learning as I go.

Really Beautiful , the only thing that sticks out to my eyes is that bottom claw doesnt look ground enough to me ... I would imagine there would be a cast shadow off that claw etc in such a strong Light !

Well spotted. I actually went in and changed that foot already since posting, as I didn't like how the two toes merged. Didn't look right to my eye. I will add a touch of shadow too. Thanks for the suggestion.

Your work is stunning. What brushes and sizes did you use on the feathers?
