Hey there! Arthur Stern's book is an excellent intro to breaking down the painting process slowly and methodically. Still life is the best way to learn to paint, I think - you can control the environment.

Also, there are so many excellent online sources for beginners now.. how about the old Charles Sovek site to review the basics? http://sovek.com/view/index.htm

She could study the James Gurney site and the Color in Your Life series (on Youtube) to begin to broaden her range. Is she drawn to the Colorist California painters, or the more subtle Philly school?

For drawing, (besides the book you mentioned), the old classic The Natural Way to Draw offers a great workable series of progressive lessons.

Cheers!
