If she did go with the MacBook she's get things like magnetic latches, power cable and builtin webcam. I always hated laptops because of the latch prematurely opening in the bag or something - the magnetic latch is a godsend.

I spent around $1500, 100GB harddrive, 1GB RAM, 2Ghz DC, DVD burner
