The air is yellowish-orange here recently with all the wild land fires. C-130's are struggling for altitude over my studio, in the thick smoky air, enroute to deliver another load of Phos-check to drop on the fires. Abstract landscapes with infernos, or firefighters traipsing through, or working on the fire lines have been my painting subject matter for the last couple of weeks.

We had the same apocalyptic skies over Vancouver and Victoria about 3 weeks ago. :( The birds vanished. People stopped in the streets to stare upwards the way they must have on the last day of Pompeii.

I have so enjoyed seeing everyone's work. Great drawing Olive (so creative, always so creative) and Chris. Wonderful vivid landscapes and water. Robert I really like your vibrant cityscape. Allison and Derek your work is always so impressive and masterful.

Here is the sketch I was working on when Arty posted this thread. Tomorrow is the 'reveal' for the painting but I am not done yet. Too lazy to push through after work in the evening except for a very brief stint.

I haven't done much portrait sketching but I am not unhappy with how they turned out.

Colin can you tell us more about the composition of this? They are obviously nurses but why are they turned this way? I'm looking forward to seeing the painting.

Re: What are you Working on Today?

Sno these are sketches of the faces of three of the five figures in the painting. They are Catholic nuns, actually, rather than nurses. There was a large group of them, from Africa and Asia, waiting outside the Cathedral in Sienna, Italy, some of them eating their lunch (the one on the left is holding a spoon or fork). So these heads are just my sketches of their faces but isnt the full composition.

looking forward to seeing the painting, Colin.

Here's what I'm working on. I still haven't finished the first layer.

Colin, I surmised as much but wanted to hear the rest of the story. :D

Mary, this is going to tell quite a story. :)

Well, someone had to do it. No reason to let such a fine, handsome, masculine body go to waste.

Fun stuff here. Robert - like your drawing, really interesting perspective, and your cat is in the perfect spot. Debi, I like your tree on the rock. It has a rolling kind of feel to it, energetic, my eye moves across the painting very nicely. Mary and Colin - keep up the work!

Today I am doing nothing, at least not art related. I think that is because I have to clean up my studio space, put all my acrylics and test stuff away, put my oils back out. And since cleaning and I are not really the best of friends, well there is always tomorrow. By then I'll be embarrassed and ashamed enough of my laziness to actually do something about it.

I like it. Doesn't seem as dark as previous.
Would love to visit Colorado one day.

Here's a couple of pics, an update of my current project.

Re: What are you Working on Today?

Cindy - I like it! Nice reflections in the water and interesting mountain range in the background. Only issue I have is reading the water as it is lapping the shore. On bottom left it looks like water on the bank, but moving over to the right it becomes thick rocklike overhangs - looks like rocks or ice frozen in position.

Selectedgrub - looks interesting. Manly and majestic. Excuse my ignorance, but is it a sculpture, or a part of a machine, or.... ? All you mechanics out there can stop laughing at me now.

I really like your scene, Mary. Your faces always have such interest.

That is really something, Selectedgrub.

CinderellaG - I like how this turned out. Very vibrant painting.

Here is the one I have been working on for the Acrylics Forum monthly challenge on the theme of "waiting" - not quite all polished and final but getting close to where I want it:

Acrylic on 16 x 20 canvasboard

Waiting in Sienna

Naw, I cleaned up this afternoon and managed to get back to oils. Shadows on one painting, and 2 coats gesso for my next one! Then I had too much wine with dinner, and it's all downhill. What about you?

Well I cleaned the kitchen, prepared a couple of canvases, gave one some retouch varnish, took some photos and then just a whole log of nuttin. :D
