MfM does the STEMS event again

This 2 week long PA event is held in three locations within Overland Park, KS. I've been doing this every year but neglected to post the 2013 stuff. Anyhow, here is what I'm entering in the jurying process for 2014. First is a watercolor, 11x15 IN or 28x38 CM on Strathmore 140CP paper.

I moved that clock tower to get it into the scene, (Mental muscles). Then I did a night scene. This is on a 12x16 IN or 30x41 CM Ampersand Gessobord. I started by painting the panel with a mixture of blue and brown and then drew on it with Naples Yellow. My oils were W+N Griffith oils.. fast drying stuff. I worked until 11PM and by then some of the lights had been turned off. I have to say that when you paint at night some times some odd people stop by.

Then I did a street scene showing a local Salvadorean restaurant. The surface and paints were the same as the above but started with smears of Flesh Pink and Naples Yellow.

Heres hoping the jurors like something of mine. :crossfingers:
Have fun, I am, Dave

Very nice. Your drawing is very good.
For the night scene, after the lay in of the dark, it was still wet when you painted on top of that right? I have thought about doing that too but would do it before hand to make sure the black dries first.
Whenever I painted night scene I also had the problem with the black been too transparent so it didn't read very dark, and when I used more paint it would glare too much.

Good Luck Dave. All are great. I really like the colors in the third. Everything works together so well. Gary

Other than a door prize at the first paint-out I did not win anything with these but at least they did hang all three paintings in the show and pretty well at that.
Have fun, I am, Dave

Three very different paintings. Can't make up my mind which one I like best - third one, I think.

Glad to see your stuff again, same high standard as I remember.

Impressed especially by the night scene, the values look dead on to me.
Gotta try one again.

Trier

BACK AGAIN: It's 2015 and I'm doing the STEMS event again. The first thing is a Two hour paint-out at the Arboretum. Here is a photo of myself laboring with a limited palette on a Gorilla Box. Once the painting is dry enough to scan I'll post it. Oils on a 9x12 inch Fredericks canvas panel.

Lots of rain since then and I have not been out painting. Have fun!
I am, Dave

Re: MfM does the STEMS event again

The painting part of the STEMS event ended this afternoon. Here are the three pieces I'll enter for the judging. First is "Big tree"

Then a remarkable period of rainy days followed. In a brief dry period I painted "Behind The Market". The same panels and paints as above.

I wanted to try a nocturne piece... this is "Late and Wet". I was rained out at about the 3/4s point, (at 10 PM) and returned the next night when it was actually dry.

...and on my way home after finishing "Late and Wet" I passed a florists offices and saw this lit-up doorway. I managed to finish at "Midnight". I entered this in a contest but did not win... that explains the frame.

"Midnight" is on an 8x10 inch Fredericks canvas panel. As before I used alkyd oils.
Have fun, I am, Dave :)

Well, I did not win any prizes... but both "Late and Wet" and "Behind The market" sold... so some people voted with their cheque books. Thank you who ever you are!
have fun, dave

Dave, I really enjoy your street scenes. That rainy night scene was great. Gary

Re: MfM does the STEMS event again

...and so here we are in 2016 and STEMS has happened just as we were having days and days of thunderstorms. I decided to use up some stretched canvases that were about so alkyd oils were the media I started with:

Caught out in a storm despite having selected a spot under an awning I gave up went home and put the art in front of a fan to dry it off. The next day I worked on it again and managed to complete the thing. It is called "...and scattered showers", an 18x24 inch, (45.7x61 CM) oil on canvas and yes it is a bit odd ball.

Then I started oils twice more and never did finish them... rained out again and again and I just could not recover the vision I'd had for them. So, just to be crazy I dug out some acrylics and gave them a shot. Again I worked on two days but it might be the most acceptable of the two paintings I ended up with. Here it is, a 16x20 inch, (40.6x45.7 CM) acrylic on canvas, "Three Day Weekend".

So I framed them up and turned them in and we'll see what the jurors think of them.

Comments ? Dave

You ended up with two nice ones despite the uncooperative weather. I especially like the acrylic. It has the freshness of a watercolor. It was fun to see how your paintings have evolved from previous years.

Good luck with the judging!
