Description:

HAPPY NEW YEAR AND WELCOME TO THE 2009 PASTEL RETROSPECTIVE!!

Your best of 2009! This project is dedicated to all of your hard work throughout the year, so let's showcase your best!

You may select up to TWO pastel paintings that you painted in 2009 and post them in the "Final Images" of this Project. This project is for soft pastels only.

Please write a brief description of why you believe these are your best or favorite paintings of 2009, and include the size of the painting and materials used. Post your images in the Gallery Exhibit and post your discussion in the discussion thread. Keep in mind these are finished paintings, so NO CRITIQUES PLEASE!

You have to "register" in the Project itself in order to post your paintings. Use the "click here" link in the above post, register your intent to participate in the Project, then post your 2 BEST or FAVORITES of 2009 in the "finished" or "gallery view" part of the Project.

For those of you not familiar with how to comment on all the paintings, here is a tutorial: When you are in the gallery, you will see all the paintings at once. After commenting on the first one, close it out by clicking on the red "x" in the upper right corner. This will take you back to the comment page. Hit your green back button and it will take you back to the Gallery. Repeat for each one you want to comment on.

This link is to the 2008 Pastel Retrospective.

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Thank you! I just broke the ice, joined and posted my two best paintings of the year -- both of them very recent, the ones I did for Christmas presents for my family. Even though some much better artists have already joined, I happened to have my images handy and went ahead and started. So looking forward to the others! This is going to be a fabulous project!

Pete, this painting is fantastic! The light is glowing through everything. The Spanish moss looks so true to life. I've loved Spanish moss ever since as a little kid some cousin that visited Florida sent me a small bag of it that I kept in my locker. It was decades before I saw it in life but once I did, I loved it even more. You have exactly the way it looks clumping on a big old tree that's probably a live oak.

The curving fence is gorgeous too, everything in this painting has so much depth and shining light. Strong values. Beautiful painting.

Whacked out Pears
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/lib/1262/completed/75377/WhackyPears2.jpg

I love these pears! Pears are the ultimate still life fruit anyway for so many reasons, yours stand out for their lively color and that whacked-out bowl they're in. This is so cheery! Everything about it makes me smile. It's fun without being too cute and saccharine -- don't mean to make it sound trivial, this goes right to why I love color and smile at open trays of pastels!

And Toto too?
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/lib/1262/completed/75377/AndTotoToo.jpg

Okay, now this one is way off into Cute, so adorable that he's too cool. He's like a little Charlie Chaplin waif-dog, scruffy and sweet. I think all your color play adds to the emotion in this one. In real life he'd probably try to bite my cat but he's so cute in this painting that I'm cool with him.

The Feather Tree
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/lib/1262/completed/1978/FeatherTreesm.JPG

That red tree is so spectacular and I think the softer background does push it forward, demand attention to the star of the painting. I've seen trees like this and it's wonderful, it's so true. I love the shape of the tree and the foliage. One of those landscapes far truer than a photo.

Drool. This is magnificent. Makes me wish I could go out and that the weather was nice, that I could get a ride to a place like this to hang out ... it's so evocative. Autumn's probably too cold for me to do things like that but it stirs my blood, makes me feel like I could be there. Love the water. Love everything about this painting. It's one of those that draws me in to imagine I'm there.

This rosebud is so lovely! The dark background really sets it off and you captured the delicacy of the petals, they look so thin and fragile with all your hue shifts and careful shading. I love this one. It's unique.

2009 must be the year PastelMat took the forums by storm! Is this on that great Anthracite color or did you darken the background over another color?

I love the contrast of the blues with the oranges and browns...really makes this painting pop! You did a great job with her beautiful markings and getting the volume in her fur. I would never have known you changed the lighting...it reads true to me!

These lion cubs are so great! I love their pose, it's perfectly artless, cats just being cats, siblings affectionate. The sheen on the rocks like residual dampness is wonderful too. Everything in this scene is glorious, and cats always go right to my heart anyway, big or little. Awesome painting!

Sparkling Moment
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/lib/1262/completed/189061/SparklingMoment0.jpg

This one is incredible. I can see why you chose it because if I'd done it, I don't think I could let it out of my possession. It's unbelievable. You captured that exact awkward ghastly moment when a big water bird is trying to get airborne and not quite there yet, giving it his all and not quite reaching his goal. It has so much passion and emotion in it, so much motion and intensity. I can feel the air resistance in how that bird's cupping his wings.

Amazing. This really is the year PastelMat inspired everyone. I'm awed at this. much as I loved those big soft lion paws in your other one this has blown me away.

Pink Cup
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/lib/1262/completed/40633/PinkCup.jpg

This is light-filled, delightful and inviting. Those grapes look so luscious and so do the fig newtons, you've probably got some sort of very good tea in the pink cup. Good still life!

And don't knock yourself when you get those perfect ellipses like the cup, the bottom of the cup, the saucer, everything perfect in relation to a truly nice flat surface. Well done!

Quoth
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/lib/1262/completed/117343/QuothGeezer.jpg

This is so fantastic! I love the way you chose such a low point of view and showed the crossing as such great distance to a being the size of Quoth. I love the atmospheric recession, it feels like I'm seeing him from Ari's point of view. All right, he would be shocked to meet a bird his own size! He looks all the darker for the reflected light on his shiny feathers. Wonderful painting with a great story -- he's quite a character!

A Dog's Christmas
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/lib/1262/completed/69642/sChristmas4wc.jpg

Happy Christmas! This painting does capture all the warmth of the season. Your dog looks so lovable, actually looks a lot like our dog Ayla. The whole scene made me smile and realize how much I love my family including our four-foots. Your dog is a good model. Love the way you got the black fur with perfect cool highlights and plenty of definition.

One technical thing that fascinates me is how you managed to push an entire brightly lit Christmas tree with complementary colors into the background and keep the focal point on your dog's sweet face. That is just masterful.

Thank you so much for making the video, teach! This is wonderful. I love the blaze of color at the horizon and the sweeping clouds dancing all over the sky. Your skies are something that inspired me to work harder at painting better clouds. It's neat how something you did as a demo came out as one of your best. I'm so glad you chose this painting to include, Deborah - it is my favorite of yours to date, and one of my all time WC favorites: as a southwestern landscape, cloudscape and pastel. I love everything about it - the palette, composition and subject.
