It was snowing here yesterday, nothing settled much though. I kind of like the snow and it would be great to get some photos for some more paintings if it does snow enough but we wil see. Had a good day in the studio yesterday working on some still life paintings.

Sid and Doug, I hope you are both happy...I have been experiencing alternating tracts of Smoke on the Water and Delilah in my mind tonight...I may need to search for something entirely new to write over them both!:D
Also need to fill my mind with painting...decisions still need to be made.

No painting for me until after the sale. I just realized that Sunday is Super Bowl Sunday? And I am supposed to be hanging work at the gallery at noon. I figure Sunday will be slow then - even people who are ambivalent about football will watching (ie, partying)
Anyway, I am sure I can hang work Monday, if I tell the manager I can't be there, or if it is slow, I can leave my helper here, I am sure most people will be anxious to get to the game, so it won't take long.
Oh, and I better get my paintings framed!

I'll bet you do a lot of cooking, Becc. Maybe this other woman is like Nancy and Himself, eating out a lot, and there are so many foods that are all ready to go in the oven and microwave. One of my friends lives off precooked/take away/restaurant food, because she was raised that way. She has tried her hand at cooking and likes it, and knows it is healthier, but she is used to just having food appear without planning or prepping it. And yes, both she and her husband are terribly overweight and borderline diabetic (she's in her early 30s and he just turned 40). She knows she needs to eat healthier, but it is hard to change a lifetime of bad habits. At least she quit smoking last year!
I guess I have gone off on a tangent. Since I have had someone else around, I have been cooking again, making a roast, jambalaya, etc. Stuff I can't finish when I cook for one, so I don't make.
If you can, sign up for their email they often run one to four day specials...often free shipping, it is worth knowing about.
Thanks for the tip!
Once the sale is behind me, I'll be able to concentrate on art again!

Boy howdy! If you go to bed before midnight, you can't get on page one around here. I thought I was the night owl of the group! And where's the obligatory cat?
Becca, rebooting is always my first option when it comes to fixing my computer, but then I'm a cyberklutz and go for the simple solutions.
The song that's running through my head today is "Brandy." The guy who sings it has such a lovely voice. Besides, it's a better story than "House of the Rising Sun," which was haunting me yesterday...
I don't have a dishwasher, and I do cook. I wash dishes once a day by hand, and like it. It gives me down time to think and plan. When I had a lot more family, I had a dishwasher, but now I just cook for one, but I use fresh ingredients. Broccoli, carrots, asparagus - everything tastes better steamed, and steaming retains a lot more vitamins. Himself had around 20 years or so of bachelorhood to get used to preferring to eat out, so I only cook for him on Christmas Day when the restaurants he likes most are closed. Except when I make chili. I make a big batch for myself, but then he eats it like it's going out of style!

Hi Kathie-you're not plagiarizing if you are merely copying to learn. Plagiarizing is when you claim the painting as your own in order to sell it.

Becca, if you ever make down here to the Prix de West, in early June, you will see a Dan Gerhartz original, or maybe even more. You'll also see Martin Grelle, and a host of other great artists of the West. Just watch out for Stendhal Syndrome (I'll bring the smelling salts...)
I remember Daniel Gerhartz winning the Prix de West, but I can't find it on their site. They only have Pris de West things listed back to 1996, but for all I know, there wasn't a Prix de West before that(?). I'll ask my docent friend that question. I sent her my last newsletter and she said I should join the Cowboy Art Association, and see if I can get into the Samll Works, Small Wonders show this November. That might be a good suggestion for you, too!
Anyway, the one of Daniel Gerhartz's that my faulty memory had in mind was a huge angel, and I'm sorry all I could find was this tiny image of it! It was about ten feet tall, and the hand she had extended forward really looked dimensional in real life!
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/01-Feb-2012/203830-Dan_Gerhartz_Angel.gif.jpg

Especially spectacular if you have a large high-definition screen! Too many

TO VIEW EVERY PART OF MICHELANGELO'S MASTERPIECE,
JUST CLICK AND DRAG YOUR ARROW IN THE DIRECTION YOU

Wow, Becca, you are so good at remembering birthdays, Becca! I tried to call her today, but she seems to be out someplace, and I hope it's enjoyable, whatever she's doing! It's also Groundhog Day. Luckily I don't buy into that superstition; especially since we've got lots of sun here today. :p
I think the way it got started was a way of telling where winter starts and ends. Over the past 200 or so years, winter has shifted from starting early and ending early to starting late and ending late. I remember working downtown in the late '60s, and about 4 pm, in late March, a blizzard hit that crippled and paralyzed the city both during and after rush hour. My car, a heavy Thunderbird, couldn't make it all the way home, and I had to rely on the kindness of strangers.:o
And the reason the presidential inauguration day was set for late January back in the early days of the U.S. was because the weather was supposed to have warmed up by then!:D

Funny, Sandra, I was just thinking the other day how my brain goes into overdrive when I am painting. It is hard work, no matter how much fun we have at it. Or how long or short the session is. Those of us who take longer with a painting are, I think, people who see their mistakes right off the bat, and then struggle to fix them. My BFF takes a lot less time, and most likely enjoys it more, because she has pretty much made up her mind what she wants to paint.* People who don't know what it's like to paint have little idea what's involved. We'll never have all the knowledge necessary for our art, because there isn't an end to knowledge, period.
*I'm so proud of her! She will be doing a demo for one of our art guilds Monday evening, and then in a couple of weeks hold a workshop for the same guild. That's a nice piece of income that she didn't expect, and she's just thrilled! We've both done demos before, but the workshop will make her locally well-known!
I like to do portraits, figurative, still-life, plein air, and landscapes. In that order. Hmm, I've been making money at portraits, especially in the gallery, so maybe I should narrow my focus? I would really like to do well in all those areas, but there's just not enough time in life.

I totally agree Nance  , and yeah I get that feeling alot its got be that as like you said theres so much we are learning and will keep learning , I do think it gets easyier in that we do start to retain certain things that well for the most part are important , kinda like shifting through the weeds to see the flowers ----and how lovely for your bff to get that work thats wonderful .... you should be doing them too I think , your that good ...
and Beccs  is right paint what you love Nance , Im going too my teach Nick said to me once , if you dont see it as beauty and it holds your eye , as an artist then how can you paint it and project that to the viewer and expect them to love it , trust your seeing:D

Click on the little thing that looks like a postacrd and follow the instructions. Sometimes it works fine, sometimes it doesn't want to co-operate. If it doesn't, you can also try the "Attach Files" option below the subject field.

Yeah, of course it would just be for my own learning and enjoyment. I noticed a student (and awesome Rtist in her own right) marking a portrait she did in Michael CArter's class as just that, since the set up was his, right above her signature. Is that necessary?

Sid, did you ever play any Roger Miller songs, like, "Dang me, dang me, they ought to take me out and hang me..." or "London swings like a pendulum do; bobbies on bicycles two by two..."?
I've now got "Dang me" goign through my head...:p
I think my husband had an 8-track of his with just those songs on it-in about 71.

Kathie, if the instructor in that workshop was painting what everyone else was painting, and/or helping each artist with their own paintings, your neighboring artist may have been putting that on her canvas, as a reminder to not show it. It's fine to hang such paintings in your own home, but it can be highly embarrassing to show them while the instructor may be showing his as well.
As an example, this painting I did was from a workshop with the fantastic Mike Wimmer, who also shows in my town, and he was painting from the same reference. Here's the portrait I did, and that happens to be Mike standing in the background.
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/02-Feb-2012/203830-Nancy_Park_1.jpg
The only way I could manage to bring up his portrait from the same ref is to find this (http://mikewimmerportraits.com/photofolio/) on his portrait page. Now you can see why it would be a touch embarrassing for me to show mine! He is one fantastic artist!

Becca, my latest copy of Plein Air Painting (it's not in the online version), has an article about a group of Plein Air Painters in Kansas who go out to the Flint Hills to paint. It's led by Kim Casebeer, who has been shown at the Cowboy Hall here. She is really good! If you think you might be interested in getting in with this group, let me know and I'll send you the article.
