 Good morning Oilies!!!

Becca, that portrait of Sid is great! I still have that picture of him playing his guitar that I intend to paint one of these days. As it is, I am having trouble finding time to paint what I need to get done!

Nancy, it can hurt to first your acrylic nails put on, but if they are hurting when you get home, then *definitely* go to another shop where they know how to do it better. There are a LOT of people who do not know how to do it properly (like cutting hair ). In fact, I'd say the majority of people really don't do that great of a job. I really lucked out here to immediately happen upon someone who does it really really really well, but though I haven't really had nails that often before this, I have had a lot of bad experiences. Don't be loyal to service people just because they are nice if they don't do a good job. (Edit, if you want acrylic nails, you might look into "pink and white"...they put acrylic tips on, but then when they grow out you can just keep the gel on without the tips--still keeping the French manicure look--and then they do not have to be removed, they just sand down the gel and reapply and it looks really nice...it's a little more pricey, but you don't have to get new sets put on, only fills.)

They only put on tips, not full nails, Carey, but I don't understand why they didn't rough up the nail underneath just enough to accept the gel fill instead of doing it three different times!

Becca, that is a wonderful painting of Sid! :D

Becca, I forgot to say that, too, because it is! I'm such a slacker... Sid says he looks better in oil than in irl! I do too, Sid!

Yesterday was a long day, but a good day. We finally made it to soccer practice and let me tell you, it was *so sweet* to see all those kids running around on the field going everywhichaway and having no clue what they were doing. It was soooo cute. We all had a lot of fun. Scarlett kept running out onto the field with her own ball.

I love that! The sight of those kids running around having a great time sounds so nice, and I could just picture it in my head with cute little Scarlett running out with her own ball!

I think my last post was in response to Becca's ponies. Wonder what I missed:confused:

Why are those longhorns not ordinary?

!becca
02-18-2012, 11:33 AM
Hi Marcia! their horns come out of their head in a V shape instead of horizontal! And, they are sort of oval shaped instead of round...and they are massive!!! I am going to take my better camera next time.

Already back from my groc shopping..went to the small local groc, it is a pleasure to shop there, it only has 3 isles to go down. I can be in and out of there in no time:D

Well, you just explained the problem, Becca! You went to sleep, so the gremlins were able to get into Wet Canvas and do all that destruction, whilst laughing evilly.

Here's my updated painting on Lydia, which was also wiped out on my thread in Portraiture.

Nancy, I am certain with the nature of cancer it will require more than one cure..but just eradicating any cancer would be amazing! High school students aren't subjected to the same social influences some corporations are. When I was at my university I was so disappointed to find that most of our research was funded by major food companies, didn't leave a lot of room for independant thought.

I have thought of satellite as an alternative to cable high speed internet. But then I here stories like yours how it's not too dependable, cranky, temperamental, etc and I change my mind again.

Do you have satellite because of your remote location? Is there no alternative? (Besides dialup on the phone lines?)

!becca
02-18-2012, 05:31 PM
Thats right, it is the only option we have out here...the cell phone connections aren't even reliable..but there is a new satellite going up the end of summer that is supposed to be phenomial..I may change to it then. But, compared to other services..it is very pricey!

Not likely they will get it...the population here is too sparce...some of the small towns around have fibre optic, unfortuantly none of the cables came by here.

That said...I have had satellite servcie for a long time..maybe 20 years and it has been very dependable until lately...I am thankful at least it is avaiable.

Yes, at least it's something even though it could easily be better if the company got their act together to improve reliability.

Thanks for reminding me, Doug, about Virtual Art Academy. I sent them a check to enroll, I think in December, and I guess it never came to them? I will have to get on their site and ask about it. I may finally have Paypal straightened out about my credit card number, so I may be able to get back in with them immediately that way.

I'm going to have to get my stuff ready for my painting demo tomorrow. I'm going to load my Ott light in the car, in case it's as overcast tomorrow at the gallery as it is today - it's supposed to be sunny but who knows? Himself is wearing his black hat for the painting, so I also need to tone a light background for my canvas; probably with yellow ochre. I find that color makes a really nice ground for flesh tones.

:clap:Wow, Becca!:music::heart::music: I'm absolutely fascinated by dancers, as I never could do anything fancy even approaching anything like that. In fact, my ballet teacher when I was a little girl, found that I had very little flexibility even then!

It's always seemed miraculous to me that people can have that much control and balance with their bodies! :heart:Loved it!:D

I'm painting him with his guitar, and with a black hat this time, and I've toned the canvas with yellow ochre, and it's almost dry. I decided I would do this one in a horizontal format.

And I'll be nervous until such time as my brush touches the canvas. I've asked him to take a video on my tripod, but I don't know if I should use the camera or the phone. Every time I take pix with the phone I can't figure out how to download them, or even access them again. I really am in the wrong generation, or I just can't figure some technical things out and need scads of help just to do things that other people around me are doing all the time!

If I can't manage the video, I'll take some pix along the way for you at any rate. Just not with my phone. Phones are for calling people... cameras are for taking pix!:o

I think we make our own luck, partly from our "can-do" attitude, and from not dwelling on what can't be changed. I dated an MIT grad once who gave me the lowdown on all sweepstakes, so I never have been interested in gambling at all...

...tho I call it an investment when I gamble on me...

Becca and Nancy, I'm glad your car stories ended with happy endings!

Nancy, I'm looking forward to hearing about your day, it sounds fun and exciting. I hope you have video and/or pics to show us later.

I would be fun, I think...there are actually several small private zoos around...some nicer than others I believe.

I had hoped I would be painting today, but that is looking less promising at the moment, where does the time go!

Arghh! There was a write-up about the gallery demos in the newspaper on one of the front pages! Now I have to prepare for more than the usual amount of onlookers. All I needed to be twice as nervous. Then again, maybe most people have other plans for today...:)

Maybe they'll think I'm a ringer -- they spelled my name Nancy Parkan instead of Nancy Park... I'm full of maybe's aren't I?

I don't know whether to be delighted or horrified, and butterflies should not be in my stomach!

I hope so...I know I've painted in public a lot when I paint plein air. What I'm concerned about most is answering questions, but I guess I'll just tell them what I'm doing as I do it. Nobody's gonna ask me for an artist's statement, for Pete's sake!

If anybody asks why I do it, I'll just say because it makes me happy!

Nancy, your demo makes me think of my experiences painting at the state fair...loads of people are always coming over to see what I am doing. Most of them are polite, but a lot really don't care what they say about my efforts. Last year when I was surrounded by tykes while I was painting I overheard some of the adults talking about it, with language skills that could have been improved upon..someone asked the other about the kids being ok being with me and her responce was...thats what she is getting paid for!!! It is things like that that keep me going back every year.

Its Like they reached in and read my mind .......:D

And in the morning I’ll be waiting,
For your never-ending wave,
For our passage to arise,
How can I explain? Yeah.

You came home for the endless summer,
On the way, saw a different colour,
In the street, got a secret to repeat,
In my mind, you’re the ephemeral night.

Now to ever be touched by,
The feasting tendrils of light,
My love upon your devotion,
The love imagining your touch.

You came home for the endless summer,
Watch me go and be the famous warrior,
Of the light, you were the strongest follower,
In my mind – you are an endless summer!
You’re the summer in my mind,
Yeah (or you're?), the summer in my mind,
Yeah, the summer in my mind.

Yeah, I get low, black witches hold my hand,
Yeah, I get low, feel no one understands,
Love, mistakes, make metal pieces bare,
Now, that simmer, that simmer to the air.

You came home for the endless summer,
Watch me go, paint a different colour,
All my life, you were the deepest lover,
Stay with me, here in the endless summer!
Here in the summer in my mind!
Here in the summer in my mind!
Here in the summer in my mind!

Oh, man, you guys... Thank you, but I don't find much excuse for what I did today. I think it looks awful, and if I can't get it looking any better by tomorrow, it will become a regular scraped off canvas ready for a different approach.

I think I may wipe it off tonight, now that I'm awake again. At least I can try to make it look like his head is NOT growing straight out from his shoulders, I hope. He does have a neck. This is not getting shown anyplace else unless I can do something for it. Right now it looks like a five-year-old did it.

I sat down and went to sleep, too, Becca, but I still haven't recovered, so I am going to clean my brushes and go to bed. Maybe I'll not be so exhausted tomorrow. I hope.

Hi, Becca and Paul!

I wonder if Jessica works today? All the schools are closed here, but when I worked, there was a long stretch between New Year's Day and Memorial Day without any holiday break.

We did have more visitors at the gallery yesterday than usual on a Sunday, and I understand that a painting and a piece of jewelry were sold. One little boy took a look at what I was doing and told his folks he was going to be an artist, too!

It's gray and windy here today as well; looks like we had a sunny day just for Sunday. Apropos appellation for the day!

I've got my mojo back today, so I'll soon be scrubbing out my mistakes on the guitar man and fixing them. Meanwhile I have two other paintings to work on as well.

Becca, I know that feeling well. Sometimes it's just to have it behind me, but usually it's because I know I can make it better! And I know you can, too! Paint like you're possessed today!

!becca

Becca, I know that feeling well. Sometimes it's just to have it behind me, but usually it's because I know I can make it better! And I know you can, too! Paint like you're possessed today!
I really will try, and jhope I can get into it! Just mixed my paint and going back there soon.

 Good Morning Oilies!!!

It's only 7:27 ayem here, looks like it is going to be a beautiful day. One of the reasons we went to the zoo yesterday was that it was windy and chilly here. and the wind really gets to both of us. I will post another animal shortly. When I've posted them, I will repost them to ril. One thing that was sad at the zoo, was in the African section. there was a map with each animal, and it showed how dramatically their territories have shrunk, if they aren't extinct in the wild altogether.

Nancy, I am glad you decided not to scrape your painting, I also think it is worth continuing with. Unlike the previous one, there are a lot of difficult elements to get coordinated; the hands, the hat, and the guitar.

I've set one aside that was good in the underpainting stage, except for the face, which I got half corrected before the paint dried. I know I can fix it in the next stage, but it is better imo to get things right in the first stage.

Marcia, I really appreciate your encouragement, because you have done a lot of very impressive paintings on this very subject!

My model hasn't played his guitar in so long that he no longer has calluses, and he said that even posing his hands on the strings hurts his fingers! I think (since he's my husband) that he thinks I won't ask him to pose his hands again if he complains...he's dead wrong! It's a cheap guitar that I gave him as a Christmas present after the one he had was stolen. I know he wants a better one, but as little as he plays this one, would he play a better one more often? You would have to know him to know the answer to that question, and I know him pretty well.:D

nance tell him to tune the guitar down a step and capo the second fret, it will make fingering a lot easier.

Hi Marcia, :wave:It is sad how many of our creatures seem to be headed for extinction..:(

Well Nancy, I have been trying to paint as if I am posessed, or at least passionately...you wouldn't believe how much paint is up my arms and on my face!
