HOTT OR NOTT

Sid here is my final verdict:

The hottest earthy red based on my samples (I didnt test all my tubes against the Georgian, I pulled a few choice samples based on my earlier charts) and TRO is out of the running because it's too different) is Gamblin Brown Pink.

HOWEVER Gamblin Brown Pink doesnt count because it is a mixture of PR101 and PR149- added perylene red!

We are sorta comparing real fruit to plastic fruit. Sorta.

Gamblin V red and Georgian V red are both synthetic- PR101.
Vasari Mars Red (which I do not have but I looked at it yesterday) is slightly brighter than Vasari V red (natural!) but it is not warmer.

So in the world of synthetics, well the ones I have anyhow, Gamblin Venetian Red wins!

HOWEVER

If you throw the naturals in the mix Vasari Terra Rosa and Rublev Ercolano red are both warmer! So they win too! :D

I am starting to think I have a real paint problem.

No don't think that stapsies, i think that having gone to all of this trouble you should make a thread of it in the main forum, you can blame me all you want!
because this is a valuable comparison and i am sure others would be very interested in these earth reds and maybe they would have some comparisons to add themselves because there are so many brands now. There have been several recent threads here and in color theory about natural vs synth earths etc.
i did not know that the gamblin had perylene red in it, that is fine with me as long as they tell you, i would still like it and mite even get it. yeah the tro is not the same. i see that the vasari terra rosa is very nice and a good one.
thanks a million lady redstape!
paris hilton would say that's hawt!:D

becc, you are surely having the computer issues,

It is this internet connection...only allows 250mb/day download.:( But I know how to restore it now.:D
I like my new computer...you should get one like it.:D On second thought...this photo handling issue is a pain with it...until I figure it out anyway.

I know what you mean bout that time to figure things out.

!becca

Seems that you are or are not already started with your day...I hope your computer issues improve too.

It is still bitter here, i am waiting a little while for the sun before running my errands...stories my poor head have told me cannot stand the cold.

Four Venetian Reds?

actually i have 5 venetian reds.......I did not include my maimeri natural venetian red in this chart.....and i have plenty of other earth reds by different names, naturals and synthetics. I think I am done collecting them now though. I have enough. Maybe I will take a picture of them later. And nothing tops Vasari.

I LOVE :heart::heart::heart::heart: VASARI!!!!!

And I would enjoy living in NYC if I were rich enough, and if I could go visit the countryside frequently.

I need to go to lunch with my friends, and I'll see y'all after a bit. Or should I say bite?:o

I'm wearing my longjohns...my indoor thermometer is registering zero F for outside at the moment. Maybe the outdoors one is in shock?

Ok pictures....Nancy asked about the box...

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/11-Feb-2012/53789-box1.jpg

I brought 4 tubes home in the box and then filled it up....

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/11-Feb-2012/53789-box2.jpg

I think my Earth Box goes really well with my Scott Christiansen greys. :D

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/11-Feb-2012/53789-greys.jpg

*Note: SC greys don't look this new anymore. They have gotten a little dinged up. So has the box. :p

Here are all my earth or earth-like reds. :D I included burnt sienna and TRO.

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/11-Feb-2012/53789-reds_tubes.jpg

I would like to add that all 4 of the tubes I got yesterday were on sale. All were series 1. I saved $10.40 total, which is almost a free series 1 tube. :D

Jess, you definitely have a problem.:cool: Especially if you actually keep them in boxes and they all look unused!

All mine, which are fewer than yours, have been squeezed, and some are in various stages of being rolled up on the far end.:o

I am going to have to start my Prednisone today. <sigh> Hate it! :( The reason I've been feeling off is my ileitis is acting up again.

I checked the outdoor thermometer when I left and it was 24F. Only 8 degrees below freezing. It must be disconnected from the indoor one; I'll ask Himself to check it out. They're predicting snow in western Oklahoma tomorrow evening, and freezing rain for the rest of us on Monday morning!

It's hard to believe we took a 2 1/2 hour lunch, but we did. We were having too much fun to leave! There were only ten of us there, which is about optimum for a conversation. Last month there were 23, and conversations were limited because of the size of the group.

I am going to have to start my Prednisone today. <sigh> Hate it! :(

That's a steroid, right? The doc had me on it for a while 18 months ago, and it really helped with the Fibro pain, but the doc was more concerned with my developing a physical dependency on Prednisone. It seems your body stops producing steriods at a certain point because you are getting enough steriods from Prednisone. Then when you try and get off Prednisone, your body feels the pain 2x as bad.

I tried one of the early betas and it seems that windows 8 will be very touch screen oriented with big buttons, etc. That's not a problem as long as we also have the option to stick with using a mouse or tablet.

Doug, I'm taking prednisone for the narrowing of my intestines that the Ileitis, or Crohn's disease, causes. It's not for pain. The only problem with having to take it is that I have to take 20 milligrams of it every day for a week, then 15 for a week, and 10 for another week, and 5 for the last week. So, anytime I have to take it, it's a medicine I end up taking for a whole month.

It's the tapering down, and keeping track, that's annoying. But it's dangerous to just stop without the tapering off. I see the gastroenterologist every year and he issues a prescription that is renewable for a year.

Just one of the many things that could kill me. I heard today about one of our classmates who went in his front door and fell down. At first he thought he had tripped, then his wife called an ambulance and it was a stroke! Just another reason to eat carefully and exercise!

Jessica, I was just being the green-eyed monster!:envy: Seeing you with all the gobs of delicious reds turned me into one, so forgive me, Lady Stapleton!:o? I need to come visit you -- and the Vasari store -- again, with scads of money to spend on paint! Besides, Manhattan is a great place to get exercise with all the walking called for!

I shop at Kohl's here, too. They have a very good return policy and I like their variety of styles.:D

Becca, I don't have the latest Windows operating system by a long shot, and considering some of the drawbacks of the later ones, I'll not get a new one until they stop supporting this version.

Sandra, those are the sweetest legs I've seen in ages. :)They are both adorable, and you've given me reason to stop goofing off and start painting again. Thank you ever so much!:grouphug:

Sid, I'm trying to figure out if I could paint a portrait in the three hours I'll have next Sunday. I may have to bring Himself to model again, but this time I'll let him sit down. but he can wear the dressy hat if he wants.

I wonder how long it took him to paint that Bouguereau in real life? Dan Gerhartz takes more time with the a than any other part of a painting, and he's fast!

Becc, you think three hours would be enough? I will have to watch your Gerhartz video again first! I was thinking "head only" ... maybe his expensive dress cowboy hat, too.

Jess, you are such a sweetie!:D That would save a lot, and I would get to meet all your pets, too!:grouphug:

I went and ordered some Charvins from Jerry's tonight, which allayed my paint addiction a bit. The super-sale ends tonight! I think that's Jerry's gimmick, making you buy all at once. Vasari at least goes for a month. Oh, and I wanted to ask you if you got the silvery raw umber? I was lusting after that one! (Jusht one more widdow drink, beertender...)

I bought the 20 oz. size so I could see if I liked them - Linen gray, Green gray dark, and Leaded gray -- a warm, a neutral and a cool.

Sandra, I've got those little legs downloaded and on Photoshop...now for some major surgery, and putting the eyes back in properly!

This house leaks like a sieve; brrrr! I'm going to go put on an undershirt...:o

Nance  of course I got the raw umber!! :D

Nancy thinks my Vasaris look too clean. Some of them do because they are newer I haven't used all of them yet. But I do think I have done a respectable job of messing mine up! I do ALWAYS squeeze ALL paint tubes from the bottom up. I'm really good about doing that. (toothpaste too!)

Also remember Vasari is crazy strong stuff, a very small bit goes a long way.

Here are a few veterans:

If anything gets artists in the habit of squeezing all tubes from the bottom, it's paint! I have the three on the far left and that's it! When you show us how the raw umber mixes with white, I might get some of that, too. And that warm pale gray on the lower right. And that...uh,oh! Time to stop drooling...

Oh yeah you DEF need a new one.
Um...since we are talking about raw umbers.....

Did you know that WN Raw Umber Greenish is gorgeous?
And Rublev's Italian Green umber is to die for?
And so is Vasari's silvery raw umber?

I'm just letting you know these things because i care about you and they are important. :D

Maybe I will collect raw umbers next.

I'll keep you posted on it once I get it, Jess! I hope I get it before Sunday the 19th, but they only do ground delivery. So here's two crossed fingers!:crossfingers: And I'll knock on wood, too. And pray. And wish. And hope...

I'm not sure how I'll use it yet, but I will start with some experimentation. One of my problems in the past has been getting a light gray-green that will reduce the chroma in some of the other paints like Ultramarine, Pthalo, and Cobalt. I will add it to the Prussian blue jeans in the cowboy painting and see how that works, too.

I don't know whether it's just me, but all the blues seem so overwhelming to me, while my reds do not dominate enough!

If you ever come west and want to see some mesas, you'll see why it's called Mesa Verde!

Summer is for painting plein air and winter is for painting people and still life! And cats...

I can't figure out what you find so wrong about your painting, Becca. Every time I look at it, the drawing looks perfect; it's balanced beautifully; there's an interplay of light and dark; there's a quiet drama to it; and, well, it's simply perfect!

Xandra, it's not as easy to paint like that after a lifelong career in commercial illustration - except for fashion illustration, I was never encouraged to stay loose and use my own style. Most of it was like drawing canned products and odd mechanical things where only precision was wanted.

Oilycat Xandra  I loved that pic you sent! Sorry about your hands...yikes...the aloe is a good idea!

wow $500 minimum...yikes...but they also ship international for free! If you are only wanting 1-3 tubes then lets talk about it, but anything over that I think it's better to order thru Vasari. I can't pack and ship it for free and esp if you are interested in those cadmiums they are heavy. And I don't know about foreign currency fees and stuff like that. But if you are looking at 1-3 tubes let me know.

Nancy... um...that mesa verde...there is no way it is going to knock down a pthalo...or knock down anything for that matter. It's realllllllly reallly weak and transparent. Thats why I havent gotten it...I cant justify spending $25 on a paint that might not be useful.

HOWEVER

its so funny how things work out isn't it? When I was over at Vasari i was talking to Gail for a while and we were talking about...of all things... knocking down pthalos. She said the way to do it is with an earth red. If you look in this pic again, look at the top right corner, that is a puddle of knocked down pthalo blue. So put that Georgian to good use!

Carey, I do hope you got back to sleep, and today is a good day for you.

Nancy, maybe you will be painting today, on one of the beautiful girls.

Jessica, I do like light paints, but I did expect some strength in the Mesa Verde. I will need to experiment with it, but I'm thinking of the gray-greens of desert plants. Thank you for passing on the tip! I don't want to knock out the Prussian in those jeans entirely, so I was thinking one of my transparents? I have Transparent Red Ochre, Transparent Red Oxide, and Transparent Earth Orange.

The last one might do it well. It's a Gamblin, and the color would be complement, or close to one, of the Prussian blue.

Becca, the reason you can't improve that painting is because it is already a masterpiece. If you don't like it, you can send it to me and I'll hang it on my wall! I'm sorry you're short of sleep today, and I hope you can work in a nap.

It's 10 ayem and Himself is going to bed now, so I will have the house to myself for eight hours or so. I am going to play "Her Mother's Locket" again, and then paint.

Sid, that demo of copying a Bouguereau really stuck with me. He showed me how to put in facial features softly and incompletely at first, and I need to try that on my faces. Thank you for that!

Himself has agreed to pose again for me next Sunday at my demo, so I don't need to go find another model!

Marcia, did you get any new art supplies to show the rest of us? I love art supplies. I think I just broke my budget buying paint at Jerry's ... and then more paint at Vasari!

Carey, I love that kitty sleeping on the steps, with that "Whut? You wanna walk on my bed?!" look! I hope you can work in a nap today, too.

Doug, sleeplessness musta been the trend last night, and I hope the pain medicine took effect and you're getting some much-needed sleep today!

Sandra, I hope your hands are much better today. Aloe Vera always helps with my hands and with any burns I get, which is why I keep a plant in my kitchen window.

I've got some linen canvases, too ... I still have three more 18" x 24"s and five 24" x 36"s to go. Then I will go buy that linen by the yard at Triangle A&E downtown and stretch my own. I don't like linen on panels too much. That's what I'm using for Lydia and maybe I shouldn't have oil-primed it. The surface texture is now unreliable, and doesn't absorb paint as well as I'm used to linen doing. Oh, well, I make mistakes and learn from them; I'm going to check if I got two of those panels. I may start her over again on the acrylic primed one.

Sandra, that sounds awful!:( :grouphug:

For the next two days I will be an auction widow...every year this time...always on the 14th. And, I may scrape my palette so I can paint...i want to paint...though I noramally do tax stuff...

We have 100% chance of snow tonight, I hope I don't loose my connection.

Becc, we've got an 80% chance of ice pellets tonight...I hope we're home from dinner by the time it happens! 60% tomorrow, same lousy stuff. But I don't need to go anywhere tomorrow. I watched the first half of Her Mother's Locket, with frequent pauses to go paint. I think I may have gotten Lydia's face finally, after smearing one successful try. Am I the only one who needs to do frequent wipe-downs? Clumsy hands! I've got the hands, feet and jeans to go, and I'm sitll trying to decide what background will set her off nicely; I don't like the lavender I put there.

Sandra, it sounds like you need to put your whole body into an aloe vera bath! We always take more towels to the beach than we really need so we can cover sticky car seats with them.

Hi, Kathie! Have you been painting?

I'm going to start watching the second video now.

Nancy, I am anxious to see Lydia.:D No, I seem to have frequent wipe ups too...I am so glad you are enjoying the dvds.

Now that I managed to get that curve in the cheek of my painting, i am liking it much better...:D I have been painting this one the floor using my old aluminum desk easel and the angle I am working at inhibited my being able to get that curve right until this morning.

Aww, Sandra, how miserable!!! I am so sorry, I hope it goes away *quickly*! My skin doesn't burn as a rule, except on my scalp, which is weird. A scalp burn is very annoying, let me tell you. I love hats.

Your sketch is delightful.

Becca, I am sure you can find other time to do tax stuff, you should definitely paint. :D

Wish I was feeling like it...actually I am, but just nooo energy. But maybe I can do some reading and anatomy study this week, is what I am thinking.

I never usually burn either but Im to white atm it seems , but not for long now Ive just been baked ...

it does hurt when I laugh

I hope you get your energy back quick:heart: , look up Gottfried Bammes Carey great Anatomy ~ theres some stuff on him on the net , my drawing teacher Ry is the one who has opened my word to him .... fabulous stuff and easy to comprehend , he breaks the body down nice and easy , its seeing this complexity of structure that is easily understood with the least amount of Lines in lots of ways:D

Sandra, I thought she was looking daggers at you. I used to try to draw people in real life situations that weren't really modelling for me, and I knew they would eventually move. So I would use my eyes as cameras for my visual memory, and quickly draw the rest while I still had the images in recent storage. I don't know if I would've wanted to save that angry face, tho...

I hope you heal up from your beach excursion soon!

Becca, here's what I managed today in between wishing I had done it bigger. The trouble with that is if I did, then the other sister would sulk until I did another one of her bigger. I plan on telling them this summer that I'm not playing any more head games with those two and their mutual jealousy.

We just got back from dinner and I can see some of the errors I need to correct in the facial features, and I need to soften the folds of her face more. I got down to the arms and shirt and left for dinner. Now I get back and see that I have her left shoulder to fix, too. I had to crop this because this shot was too crooked to straighten it without cropping. Back to the oil panel...

I started Lydia with paint. Loved that video, and thought how much more fun it is to paint old people than children...just frustration with trying to get her face right.
That's yammering in me head, trying to get good shaping yet smooth child flesh transitions...

That other video on that site, showing István Sándorfi's paintings, is incredible -- such talent, skill, imagination and imagery knocks my socks clean off!

I'm cleaning my brushes and seeing if I can get good light tomorrow. another of my frustrations is working with teensy brushes and not being able to wipe anything smooth with my fingers.

I'm saving up for a new camera.

Becc, I hope your visit with your brother is as nice as the birthday visit!:)

I'm going to bed; it's been a long day for me, and coming home tonight with a bit of sleet already started was scary. I don't drive or walk on ice. Funny, when I was young they called it "super-cooled" water." It was water when it hit the streets and it would instantly freeze. Rather pretty, the ice-laden trees, but only if you don't need to go anywhere!

And if they're not your trees!

I was going to deliver a painting saturday (and get paid $450), and his wife called that morning to let me know he was in the hospital, so don't come over because no one was home. I should to call them today and see how he is. I feel at odds about this. I know them and really hope he's okay, regardless, but would also not like to lose the sale. :wave:Doug, since I don't need to go out today, I'll just enjoy all the pristine white out there -- and take advantage of the reflected light to paint by!

I'm having an Old Holland Cremnitz White Day!

"Verify the veracity"...are you turning into Sid?

Hibernate, that's the ticket! Makes you appreciate central heating though!

So does that mean your day is all leaden? Sorry to hear that! :p

"Verify the veracity"...are you turning into Sid?

Now Nancy, that wasn't very nice! I'm not turning into Sid, but I have seen him at the Jocular Paronomasia Emporium on consecutive Tuesdays!

Slow, but no real complaints. How is your Monday shaping up, Becca?Aside from being plenty tired...ok...the tired should begin to improve this week..I am offically giving up on the eye vits with their mysterious powers to keep me alert 20 hours a day.

That is a strange one-never heard of that before. Hope they are they helping your eyes.

Why is it that most prescriptions that do anything usually have undesirable side effects?

Why is it that most prescriptions that do anything usually have undesirable side effects?

And, furthermore, why do I always seem to get them.

I know I have said I don't like ads and that is true...but listening to pharmaceutical ads is really an eyeopener when they list the potential side effects..."if you die while taking this drug, call your doctor immediately!"

Will see in about a year how my eyes are again.:crossfingers:

Tell me about it-I must have the Canadian franchise on that! :(

 I've seen some of those ads, and it's like they are trying to scare you by listing all the possible side effects, no matter how remote: " Breathing while taking our pills may cause excessive lifespan. And whatever you do, don't eat for 3 months!"

And every time the druggist fills your prescription, they give you a 10 page print out of possible side effects. I can just picture the team of lawyers at Parke-Davis writing that disclaimer so that the company can't possibly get sued. (If only!)

I've had cataracts in both eyes done, too. They said it might have been because of the steroids I had had so much of, that it happened to me when I was still in my fifties.

I've had so much %$*&@&%! surgery done in my life that I keep wondering if the hospitals think I'm one of those surgery addicts, which is way totally opposite from the case!
