 Good Morning Oilies!!!

Becca, I love your new fishy, good luck with it!

Sid, the Dawg Musician was too cute!

...
There are incredibly more people alive now to feed than it was back then when I was a child. Sometimes when I think about it the whole thing just stuns me. But there should be kinder ways to feed a population than making animals suffer terribly before death.

Off my soapbox; back to bed...

Not only are there so many more mouths to feed (and ironically people starving in this country of overabundance), but we as a society are encouraged to eat far more meat than we need to (although a vegetarian would say that any meat is too much), I believe I have read a study or 2 that says people really only need a meal with meat 2 or 3 times a week, and then iin about half the amount we are used to. And probably eat twice a many fruits and veggies as we do in the least processed form possible. Food for thought.

I'm a 'foodie', love to cook and try different dishes from different cultures, and won't turn my nose up at a plate of Mac n' Cheese (except maybe the boxed stuff or Sizzler's - that's just gross), but everything in moderation for most people and otherwise if it's contra indicated for some physical conditions.

Wow! Nice view from the soapbox!;)
And thanks, Marcia, for the extra tips! You're terrific!

Goodnight, Becca and Marcia! I hope...:o

Well I hope they are helpful, and I personally use a long straight edge, especially for strings. They are just too close together to even try with a mahlstick, and basically straight, if not quite parallel with each other, especially when finger pressure is applied.

You have inspired me to get back to some guitar paintings I started a while back and finish them! :music:  :music:

Not a painting day, Wed usually isn't, but I will get a lot of little chores done today so tomorrow will be!

I dated a guy in high school who drove a white 60s era Opel station wagon - bet yours was one of those sporty ones. The engine really sounded like a sewing machine. With the exception of a few VW beetles, we certainly weren't used to anything that wasn't from Detroit, living in Nebraska in the late 70s. :)

 Ohhhh GOOD MORNING!! :D :D :D

Marcia, that is really interesting about that study. I guess everyone has their own ideas about nutrition and I really can't figure who is right and who is not right--I guess everyone probably is right, it just depends on who you are. :D

My honest question is, if we're not "supposed" to eat meat, then what *are* we supposed to fill our bodies with? Obviously fruit and veggies are a main choice--but honestly, there is no way in the world I could eat enough fruit and veggies to satisfy my body...that leaves a heck of a lot of carbs to take up the slack, doesn't it? (Which, admittedly, is what I often end up doing, but for many many people, carbs are really terrible for them.)

I think eating is really tough and not ever as cut-and-dried as these people would have you believe.

My honest question is, if we're not "supposed" to eat meat, then what *are* we supposed to fill our bodies with?

Humans are Omnivores, which means we eat durn near everything-plants, animals, rocks...ok, not rocks!

Tigers are Carnivores, or meat eaters. Deer are herbivores. etc

The fact that humans are omnivoires is a large part of why the human race has survived and prospered for so long. At least until know.

However, a balanced diet is a healthy diet-unless of course the meat is jacked up with steroids, the fish has mercury in it and the vegetables have some disease of the week!

Not just steroids..but other pharmacological as well...like antibiotics..but there are small markets where consumers can choose not to have this in their food...if enough people demand it, the industry will follow.

Let's hope so. All they need is proper regulation as to food standards. If they say beef is organic, it has to mean something.

In a way, it's funny, people like my grandfather (who had a cattle ranch in Alberta) were organic and didn't even know it! Free range cattle, no pesticides on the fruit and veg, etc.

Hi, Oily Peeps!

I got a recipe for purple peanut butter; all you add is grape jam.:D

Marcia, whilst I was perusing your website I looked at your WIPs, and wanted to ask if you always start with a grisaille?

I'm having a cheese and tomato sandwich for lunch. I really don't pay that much attention to whether I eat meat or not, but here's an odd thing that came to my attention:

A friend of mine with big boobs was surmising that she had them because of the hormones they put in chicken feed. Says she used to be a lot smaller, but in the past twenty or so years, they have been adding all kinds of weird things to edible animal flesh!

Becca, I used to drive my brother's Austin Healy before I owned a car. That was ever so much fun!

Doug, we could use some of your snow down here. It is very warm outside, and sunny. We're supposed to get up to 68F today and 78 tomorrow! Still dry as a bone, too.

It looks like Branson, MO got hit by either a small twister or a hard straight wind. It is only a short way from Joplin where that disastrous tornado hit last year. We still have volunteers from Tulsa and OKC going up to Joplin to help rebuild.

Sid, I never can catch up with the Oily Rag. It takes me longer to review all the posts since I was last on it, than it takes me to write a reply... and since I'm a slow typist, that's saying something!

Marcia, whilst I was perusing your website I looked at your WIPs, and wanted to ask if you always start with a grisaille?
It depends on the painting - small ones 8 X 10 and down are alla prima, as are landscapes. Things that require precision, like still lifes and guitars, I usually start with an umber underpainting, make corrections with white and umber if necessary, then move on to color. Gosh, I really need to update my site! I finished the mandolin and violinist in December.:o

Anyway, this one, after much debate (to color, or not to color?), is in it's finished state even though it's still sepia toned.
http://geigarts.com/Geig_Site/Works_in_Progress_files/0043wc50k-filtered.jpg
This one I remember foregoing the underpainting stage, and blocking it in color, because I was so excited about it!
http://geigarts.com/Geig_Site/Guitar_Series_files/035redjag48k.jpg

So I guess I am mostly consistent.

It's hormones all right, but not from what she's eating!

My metabolism seemed to crash around 32 - before that, I was very active and could eat like a horse and weighed between 115 and 125 lbs (I'm 5'8"). Then I started gaining weight, even though my activity level was the same, so I started cutting back on my diet. At 49, I am probably over 150 lbs, and eat a fraction of what I used to. Somewhere in between there I also got shoved into a sedentary lifestyle (ie, retail, then an office job), and I am still nowhere close to being as active as I'd like to be. I'm pretty sure that's fairly normal for almost everybody. I know a few people who remain skinny and fit their entire lives, but not many. (and I went from a C cup to a DD)

Tell me, does she have any opinion on chemtrails?
(I have an otherwise sane, clearheaded friend who is obsessed with them.)

It could be survival of the fittest; those 90 year olds are the only ones left of their generation. I think it's mostly genetics and a lot of luck. Taking the best care of yourself that you can just makes the rest more bearable.

Speaking of bikes, I want to get mine in for a tune up and new tires - it has been sitting for too many years. Wish there were more places to ride it were I live. (Mostly washboard roads and 1 paved road with no shoulder.)

I still have to adjust her left (our right) eye, which is a skosh out of position. that lovely blue is so dense that it will have to dry before I can move it.

I have been thinking about backgrounds. It seems like I love my paintings up until such time as I have to put in backgrounds. Most of the art I did over my lifetime as a commercial artist was illustration of people and objects that needed no background.

And I'm studying WHY I don't like the backgrounds I add...

Backgrounds are significant..I'm not sure I do the best there either. It is good to review these things with our work, promotes growth.

Becca, I've noticed with your outdoor paintings with model, your backgrounds are beautiful. You might captialize on that in your work. I'm still trying to figure out what solution for mine would would best.

That's one of the reasons I bought all those different tints of grays, and I intend to experiment with them to see how they work as background color.

Nancy, that is so nice of you to say..

Speaking of grays, I am thinking of using them in a few little paintings too..but ones that I mix, maybe with a little torrit too. but it has been hard to get to the easel lately, and for some reason today I couldn't find the inspiration...

It took me TWO days to get the frets and strings right ... and they still don't look as good as yours!
From what I can see, you are being way too critical. Lexie is adorable:heart: , what a fun painting too start while you wait for the guitarman to dry.

Yeah, Doug, but you can't run around barefoot and in your light clothes all year long, ready to jump in lovely warm ocean. Even when I, a Scorpio, visit my daughter in Massachusetts, I only go in August, because that ocean is for polar bears in any other month.

I would love to go visit Sandra some time!:D

I'm gonna migrate to the March Oily Rag, since it is now March 1st in the central time zone!:smug::wink2:
