That's the ticket, Becca! Bathe in the stuff, and then later you can take a different kind of bath!
I have yet to get going; I still need to pick up a prescription and get some groceries today, so I better get my excursions over with so I can settle into paint!:)
I just noticed my sweet husband sketched out the proportions for me on the guitar and head angle.:music:
Sid, I'll give him your suggestion and I know he'll appreciate your input!:D

...I know he wants a better one, but as little as he plays this one, would he play a better one more often? You would have to know him to know the answer to that question, and I know him pretty well.:D
I am guessing 'No' then :)
On the other hand, my bf was without any of his guitars over Xmas, and someone who was moving away gave him a cheap one (worth a couple hundred bones). He took it to an open mic, let someone else use it, and left without it. Apparently the other person took it home, but bf never made an effort to get it back. He got 2 of his good ones back, one went straight to the shop for a repair, the other is going back to Taylor for a special treatment soon. Afaik, he hasn't played the Taylor, but he's only had it back for a week, and he's been busy.
nance tell him to tune the guitar down a step and capo the second fret, it will make fingering a lot easier.
Good point, if he's only posing, the strings could be loosened considerably.
Suspending fruit in jell-o? Sid, you are on a jell-o roll! And please share your bath salts recipe too!
Here are a few more from yesterday. It was midday, so naturally the cats were all taking naps. At least the cheetah and jaguar weren't hiding up on ledges, like the mountain lion (all you could see was his tail hanging down), staring off into the distance with its back to us like the serval, or snoozing in it's den, like the bobcat.

What are the ratios? Where do you buy glycerin? The pharmacy?
equal amounts of salts and soda i use about 1/3 cup each per bath, tablespoon of glycerin.
you can use various amounts, omit soda, use less of a fragrant essential oil instead of glycerin, whatev's. yes from pharmacy, salts and soda from dollar stores. recipes (http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Your-Own-Bath-Salts) are all over the web (http://www.bolekscrafts.com/bath_salt_recipes.htm).
it benefits my skin.

Ah, to be possessed by the muse... I may be suffering from sticker shock. It's been a few years since I bought my last gallon of OMS, and this was the same brand. The only difference is that the can is plastic instead of metal. Formerly $15, now it's $25! Am I $10 richer than I was before? Not by a long shot!
Luckily I had a 40% off coupon...
Becca, Sandra, how nice to read about your obsessive possession! I think it's catching. I hear Himself getting up and I'll get him posed in a bit for some work on my "magnificent obsession" ... the current one, that is. Amazing how fickle we are; we fall in love with each painting we're working on.
Becc, the only advice I would give on your cow painting is to make the one in front enough larger than the rest of them to give it some depth. Otherwise, it really conveys the wintry isolation of the cows and sets a mood!

I got a better pic of Himself before he left, and I will correct my painting from this. I needed his head without the hat, and I may replace that hat with another one that is not so beat-up! I still want it black, but a bit dressier than it was. He's also wearing his lavender shirt today, which I don't know if I'll use. In the interest of color harmony I would need to have something else in the painting pick up the lavender color.

Thanks Doug. I have used Audio HIjack for capturing audio because I can set it to record streaming audio whenever what I want. I also use Snapz Pro, which Camtasia looks similar to. I may try the free trial of Camtasia just to see how well it works. If I could set it to open and open a webpage to record like the audio software does, that would be cool.

Very few songs have been written about tumbleweeds. I would venture to say that's the only one. Some of those old cowboy songs were really original. Ghost Riders in the Sky. I Lead an Old Paint... Water...
All the words and the tunes come tumbling into my head in a flash the minute I thing of the songs. And speaking of originals, here's one from the Golden Age of Illustration that I just love:

I started a new canvas tonight. I like working directly on the linen rather than toning it like I did the last. What was I thinking? Just demo...
Anyway, Himself says he doesn't want his face in it, and I don't want the hat in it, so I decided to put a rather beautiful man in it!
Using venetian red, video blue, and as a nice reflective shade after the turning of the form with blue, I had a nice surprise with a touch of linen gray! It also mixes nicely into whatever other purples I mix. I'm going to try to make this into a warm and intimate painting, as if he is playing for no one else but him!

I wouldn't mind starting a thread on this, but since it's a portrait of an imaginary person (but my husband's hands), I can't start it in Portraiture. I may ask...
!becca
02-21-2012, 12:32 AM
Nancy, beautiful start!!! And your imaginary man is beautiful...but the hands are amazing!!! I love it! I don't see why you can't post in Portriature...but there is always Oils.:D
I have been getting a shopping list put together..will have errands in the morning. Maybe I will try to get an update pic of my Cows in the snow painting...I may not be done with it yet...it is stark like I had originally saw it being, but now my mood has changed since then and I may change it too...but not soon as I need to have a few days with the cleaning faerie....that is if she shows up.:D
!becca
02-21-2012, 01:02 AM
Here is the pic I just took...I may try to improve the snow in the foreground tomorrow, but I think what I have done may have helped it as it is...adds texture and I think brings my focus back to the cows a little more...I really didn't mean for all the trees to be quite so dark, I am not sure what happened there, when I was painting them I was concerned they might be too light....it's likely the biggest problem I am having with this one is that I just really wasn't in the mood to paint it at the moment and I really didn't have as much time as I would have liked....But practicing with my knife was a good thing.
Ok, no the uploader is on the fritz:rolleyes: will try again in a few minutes.
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/21-Feb-2012/100116-cows_in_the_snow_3_0132copy4.jpg
I did just finish making the blue tones in the foreground a little more purple...
NancyMP
02-21-2012, 01:33 AM
I can see you have some more color variation there, Becca. Did you add a little yellow as well as the purple, or is that my tired eyes? Looking much better!
I'm tired, and Himself and I both are having digestion problems. We think it may be the dinner last night that was off. I hope we're both better by morning -- I have plenty of medication for such things and we're now all dosed up.
A little extra sleep could help, too, so I'm going to bed soon.
!becca
02-21-2012, 01:40 AM
Nancy, there is actually kind of a gray-green in there too.
I have been a little unsettled lately too..maybe something is going around..hope your cures work.:)
Also read that the flu is just getting a good start at it this year...maybe I will get a shot tomorrow..
I hope I am able to get to bed soon too.
NancyMP
02-21-2012, 01:53 AM
Becca, I love gray-green! Hmm. I can tell my camera isn't good at catching color or tone nuances in paintings, even tho it keeps reverting back to 840 pixels! Huge files that don't contain any subtlety. I wish the old Samsung camera hadn't bitten the dust!
We did get a flu shot, but that was back in October. Sometimes flu strains mutate.
We were both really tired last night, too, very short on sleep, and that's no way to be when you want to avoid coming down with something. I'm going to wash up a little and sleep.
See you later, and sweet dreams! :grouphug:
!becca
02-21-2012, 01:57 AM
Nancy, you are right, these cameras need some refining for the subtle colors. according to the new releases, this year the vaccine actually is good for preventing the current stain of the flu.
Sad note, I heard the other day the bird flu has taken out most of our chickadees here.:(
You do need your rest to stay well. Sweet dreams to you too.:grouphug:
My sleep has been pretty short for a while too...early morning coming again..will see everyone tomorrow.:grouphug:

Nancy, great start on the guitarist, the hands are fantastic!
Becca, I think it was good you started dark on the snowscape, starting too light is a disaster imo, because one can only go so white when the highlights go on last. Plus it reminds me of a midwest winter with the bright snow and dark gloomy skies in the background just loaded with more snow!

:wave:Hi, Sandra! Are you painting today? I hope Nell is ever so much better than she was yesterday!:)
I need to go pick up another prescription today at 1 pm; they couldn't manage to get my methotrexate in yesterday, so I'll call before I drive down there this time. Then I get to paint some more!
Oilies, I use olive oil to remove make-up and wash my face. Still got lotsa wrinkles, but it really helps with dry skin problems!
.

Nancy, i pretty much quit wearing makeup at all a long time ago and that helped with most skin problems I was having. Now, I may use mineral powder on occation, but that pretty much is it.

I was at the craft store the other day looking at stuff. I was looking at a few ready-made frames that I could frame a 16x20 pastel in. (Why are those hard to find these days?) They had some for $35, and I thought that is really not bad, maybe I should get one.
I went over to look at the paint and brushes.
I came back to the frames and they were now $70.
That is so not fair. :(

This is why I always hesitate when I embark on pastels--the framing is just so gosh darn expensive and I like to work large. :( I really need to find a way to display them without framing, even if it doesn't look as nice, because I hate being so hesitant.

Becc, I had to start wearing medicinal make-up when I was 13 because I broke out in cystic acne. It was so bad over the ten years I suffered with it that I was seeing a dermatologist every week for cobalt x-rays and penicillin treatment; and my mother bought an ironer so she could sterilize all my pillowcases and sheets.
I was in misery, and as a result, I've had severe scarring, developed an allergy to penicillin, had chemical and abrasion scar removal, and still have scars. When I'm 100 or more years old, I hope they put make-up on me when I die.
So, I wear a very nice brand of makeup that most people can't even tell is makeup!

I don't know whether to be a little insulted, or pleased, but my bf brought me home some of this:
http://bbw.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/pBBW1-10388190v275.jpg
" Vanilla Absolute soothes and calms to instill feelings of comfort. This skin softening scrub combines exfoliating Sugar and a special moisturizing blend of sunflower, safflower, sweet almond and jojoba oils to leave skin silky smooth."
I tried it and it not only smells heavenly, my skin did feel much softer and smoother.
I can't ever seem to find a makeup that looks natural on me or mascara that stays on my lower lashes. I have given up on everything but powder.

That's interesting, because when I was about 21 I had to go see our family doc, for the first time, and he told me that it was a lack of female hormones during puberty, mostly lack of estrogen, that made it run rampant. My current doc and I have an ongoing argument about me staying on hormonal supplements, mostly because women's cancer was given so much press emphasis after the '70s when Women's Lib was so aggressive.
I wear DHC CoQ10 Moisture Care foundation. It's a Japanese company that really has a terrific line of products.

Those are neat, Becca! You caught the "gesture" in each one without taking too much time!
I went to the bank to use the ATM and get some cash. A Loomis truck is parked there and I go into the alcove where the ATM machine is, and it smells like ammonia in there! The ATM is down, so I went inside to withdraw my cash.
When I was talking to the teller she asked whether I wanted it from my account or our account. When I told her I only maintain my personal account for any Paypal purchases that may come in, she wanted to see my website because she's interested in painting! So I gave her my card to go take a look.
That's the first time I ever found it more productive to go to a teller (hopefully!) than to use an ATM!

You can find all kinds if you search for brush carriers. I like tubes: mailing tubes, pvc with end caps (and you can drill a couple holes in the side to sling a rope handle through).
I would like it if someone made a semi transparent tube with a twist off cap. There has got to be something like that.

Sandra I will tell you, but it isn't pretty at all...it is about me, again...:o
I hardly ever get sick..never throwup..but one day I was soooo very sick and my husband was out in the fields so I thought I was dying and I called my mothetinlaw to get a message to my husband that I needed to go to the hospital. Well, I was feeling pretty crazy in the head and soooo sick. We went to the emergency room and I tried to tell the doc how sick I was, but he called in a psychologist and the guy was trying to make me calm down because I was just shaking alli over then all of a sudden it happened...I VOMITED!!! I mean it flew across the room and splattered on the wall...that really cleared my room. no one would come in with me after that...not a doc or a nurse or my husband...they just stood out in the hallway.
Then the doc sent me to a mental ward 60 miles away! I vomited all the way there...then when I got there they drew my blood and my sodium levels were on the floor. That is why I was so sick...the doc there told me I was lucky I didn't die! The only way to treat it was for me to restrict fluids. It happened again a few times after that, but never since.
Ok, that is my story...I don't vomit often, but when I do it is world class!:D
Well, now that I have looked at this...maybe a pm would have been better.:o

 Oh Becca, that must have been a terrible day.
Paul, I have used a bamboo place mat before for brush carrying, just roll them up in it and tie it, it works great as it will protect the ends. If your brushes are dirty, just bring a little saran wrap to wrap them up in.
I would like it if someone made a semi transparent tube with a twist off cap.
Actually, somewhere I have a really cool tube that is like that, it comes in two parts that twist together so you can make it longer or shorter even, though I haven't really used it. I found it in a German art store and it was so neat I had to get it. But I didn't end up using it and I don't know where it went. If I ever find it again, I will send it to you.

Found in a box on my porch today: Vasaris!!!
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/21-Feb-2012/203830-Vasari_paints_1.jpg
And here's how they mix. The Mesa Verde is very light, but it's of a dense consistency, and I think I'll use it without lightening it for the most part. The Raw Umber is strong and can take a lot of white before it shows a slightly warm grey, and the Capuchine Red Lt. is an absolutely lovely flesh tone!

 Oh Becca, that must have been a terrible day.
Paul, I have used a bamboo place mat before for brush carrying, just roll them up in it and tie it, it works great as it will protect the ends. If your brushes are dirty, just bring a little saran wrap to wrap them up in.
Carey that's sweet thought whether your tube turns up or not. The placemat idea is a great one too!
Far too many posts to comment on, but I am enjoying the patter! And the clucking!
Nancy, I do believe he fancies me!

Well, I sat down after my last painting session tonight and just realized it was approaching the witching hour in these parts. I notice WC has us all posting as if the US Eastern Time Zone is our center. I just washed up my brushes and put away my paint so that I'm not tempted to paint all night.
Becca, you need to paint them chickens! I don't know why, but every time I see a chicken I want to laugh. Do you suppose that's why chicken paintings sell?
Marcia, I just wrap up my used brushes in a paper towel and stick them inside my paper towel roll, but I have to be careful not to let them slide through. It would be nice to have a long tube that's at least closed on one end.
I'm going to Bedfordsville, as Sandra would put it, so I'll see you all tomorrow, and have a nice night!

Sid, That is a sweet pic of Molly! :cat:
I have a friend with chickens and her cats are afraid of them.:D But, then, they aren't highly prized felines like Molly.
Is that your dogwood tree? It is a beautiful backdrop.

Molly does look panther like.:cat:
I've never saw Tob or Dex in a tree..tob does love to climb ladders though...his problem is then getting back down the ladder.
Katy on the other hand..when she was much younger.it was just a small tree..

i make brush holders out of cardboard and duct tape, this is one that clamps to a pochade box with a dollar store binder clip. you can make a longer one with a cap and then you can just wipe the brushes off or dip in oil and stick them in it and throw the box in the freezer and get it out when ready to use again.

Sid, that looks very handy! Guess I travel with mine so seldom that I haven't pursued good alternatives...I will keep it in mind. Now, I just keep my brushes out, and at the st fair the kids were swiping them.
Since it is going to be 70 degrees today, I had thought i might have had time to go out this afternoon..but we are supposed to have that 40mph wind again.

Ok, more tech changes to deal with!!! I can't upload images to my blogsite now apparently because Google no longer supports Internet Explorer.:( I need to download Google Chrome in order for things to work...what do any of you know about Google chrome? Any downsides to doing this? Right now I am thinking it may solve many of my issues, but then I planned not to make any decisions today.:)

i was about to do that the other day, lots of people here use chrome and i think it is just fine so i wouldn't worry bout it :crossfingers: :D

Thanks a lot, Sid.:D I didn't want to rely on my own decisions today. I will do it this afternoon...have a mid-day appointment to leave for in a few moments...I don't like mid-day appts at all...the mess up the whole day.
See you later.:D

I dunno. I wouldn't use Chrome just because of Google's stupid privacy things now, just on principle. It seems you can't get entirely away from Google now, but any lessening of its use is a plus in my book. Internet Explorer is worthless most of the time. I use Firefox, which is sometimes worthless, too, but usually works. Though my husband has an updated version that I don't like as much as the one I have.
Incidentally, we have started using Ixquick (https://www.ixquick.com/) as a web search, it works well except for the image search, which really doesn't work well as yet.
Oh, and that is such a cute and funny picture of Katy. :D :cat:
Sid, that is a very clever brush holder, nice McGuyveresque use of that duct tape. :D
Sandra, Nell looks wonderful.

 Good Morning Oilies!!!
I agree with Carey - I don't care much for Chrome, my bf uses it, and I don't like navigating without a Menubar. I could get used to it, but I don't see the need.
I use Safari, but I also have Firefox as an alternative on my Mac and use Firefox when I use Windows.
If you don't want to switch away from Explorer, my advice would be to install either Chrome or Firefox and use them just for uploading images in Google.
Sid, your brush box idea is a good one.
Paul doesn't need to take an easel, which is where I carry my longer handled brushes, but I use an old portable mini bar, probably from the '50s or '60s. It has tip out holders for liquor bottles which hold most of my brushes and oms. There is an adjustable leather loop that holds a half used roll of paper towels.
Guess I am lucky to have it, a few quick searches online didn't turn up any others with the tip out feature.

Here is a brush box I found online, and if shipping was cheaper .....
http://www.artistsupplysource.com/product.php?productid=30938&cat=4943&path=alt&page=1
Today on my trip to the hospital, I swung by Blick and bought a fabric brush holder that also stands up and holds the brushes.
Marcia is correct I don't need to bring an easel, I have a french easel an I would have carried my brushes in there.
Has anyone tried the "funny brush" ? Just got one and makes painting grass and foliage very simple.
