Baby Giraffe

This is the first drawing I've ever done with colored pencils.

It's 9x12 and was done with Prismacolors.

This is a really superb job - giraffes are great animals anyway (and difficult to draw because they look like caricatures to start with) and you have really done this one justice - the colours are really strong, I always have trouble trying anything in coloured pencils, I can never get enough colour to come off the damn things.

I was going to say that I thought the background could do with a little bit more work to block it in (rather than have all the pencil lines visible) - but looking again I'm not so sure.

A really nice drawing - next an ostrich? (anopthercaricature animal!!!)

I was unsure of the background too. Now that I look at it, i probably should have done it on green paper.

Just great!! You did a wonderful job with the colored pencils. I too have difficulty with them.

I like the background as is. If you had used green paper, that creamy white might have been hard to pull off and it looks sooo nice.:clap: :clap:

I have to disagree with the back ground though,
I LOVE IT THE WAY IT IS!!!! I makes me feel like he is in a feild of green grass!??? Does this make sense?

Anyways great job you have your hightlights and shadows perfect!!! I am so jelous!! It is AWESOME!!!

Excellent work! I love the velvetty softness that is almost touchable! I, personally, like the background as is with the sketchy look to it. It really sets this little guy off and adds to the piece.

Nice work on this! The detail on the giraffe is wonderful.

Regarding the background... IMHO, it's a bit bright and competes slightly with the subject. The treatment is nice; I like the sketchiness against the wonderful detail and realistic giraffe.

The background looks much brighter on the scan than it does on the actual drawing. Here it looks almost lime green. On the actual picture it's more like grass green.

I'm still not sure about it... I only figured out what I was going to do for the background halfway through.

Great job on your first CP, the giraffe's fur looks fantastic, not sure about how bright the background is. Would also like to see a highlight in the eye. Well done :)
