I love your style! I've looked through several (but not all) of your past drawings--got one question--have you ever done any of them in color?

DrDebby

Very cool. I always enjoy looking at the WDE through your sketches.

Great job as always, EP! My favorite is the duck - your foreshortening in that is done really well.

EP, I have another of my endless technical questions. Do you do the sketches first and then add the background lines, dots, circles etc. after all the sketches or as you go? Odd question I know, I just can't seem to find my way to making doodling relaxing, it always stresses me out.

Joan T
01-14-2012, 11:21 AM
Super job on these!!! I love how you divide them up and relate them. The duck looks like he is walking up to the shore area!!!

nicely done. . . love the little fox

eyepaint
01-14-2012, 02:02 PM
Thanks, everyone.

Margo - I draw the boxes, then insert the sketches. When I'm all done then I add the backgrounds. Sometimes I have planned the bg for a sketch pane while making the sketch, but I do the bg at the end.

You never cease to impress me with this style and the outcome.

You probably got asked these questions many times before, but here goes:

How long does it take you to complete one of these spreads?

Do you finish the piece all in one sitting?

Do you sketch out a "plan" on another piece of paper before you work on your sketchbook, or do you do it "on the fly."

eyepaint
01-15-2012, 12:53 PM
Thanks, everyone.
Jacqui - yes I'm pleased with it.
Janet - thank you. I draw the boxes on the pages, approx. 1 per image, and lately I've been experimenting with shapes and layouts. I sketch on the fly, no preplanning. Then I draw the backgrounds.

JTMB

Another excellent set that lives up to the high expectations we all have for your sketches! I had to do the Leonberger, being a dog person and particularly loving bigger dogs.

Thanks EP. I was playing with doing the images in you style but doing the backgrounds as I went, somehow I never manage to fill the boxes that way, before my hand hurts or boredom sets in. Having given it a go I have even more appreciation for the amount of effort and time these lovely sketches take!

Here are my sketches, directly in ink, in my Stillman and Birn ALPHA book. I started this book in August 2011 and it contains only WDE sketches. This book is a dream to work in with ink. And it's hard cover so it should look fantastic on the bookshelf when filled.

Let's estimate 2 hours for the sketches and 1 hour for the backgrounds. Worked in many fragmented time slots.

those are great, EP. You made those fit together and coordinate so perfectly on that spread. I often wonder, do you do the divisions first and then the picts inside? Or do the picts and then add the borders? Either way, wonderful creative work as usual

Very nice as always on the last three weeks' work! I always gravitate toward the critters as my favorite subjects, but they are all so well done.

Just looked at several sets of your most recent ink-in-a-box sketches. I love them! I think you should publish a book of them.

Very cool how these are all together. Do you start a new sketchbook for 2013 or just a new thread?
