A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Pastel Retrospective 2002
Project Leader: sundiver
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Pastels
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

I joined WC! in January of 2002 and watched the Pastel Forum grow steadily until now it's probably one of the most active, not to mention lively!

Over the year many, many beautiful pastel paintings were produced and painted. They are too good to disappear into cyberspace, hence this project to preserve our favourites.

If everyone who has made pastel paintings in 2002 would post one, two or a few of their favourites (maybe because you think it's your best, or because you learned a lot while doing it, or whatever reason), we'll have a permanent gallery for all to enjoy!

So let's see those pastels, WetCanvassers! Upload your paintings and tell us why you chose them. There is no deadline, but do remember these are paintings done in 2002.

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=389)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Great Idea Sundiver  .. this is going to be fantastic.... well done to you for thinking of it.
I only started in August 2002 and have progressed I think (I hope) so much, and thats from all the help and encouragement fellow WC'ers have given me

... Im sure it will become an annual event too :)

Well Lol, someone had to be first..... the reason why Im showing this one (sorry for bad photo - I even learned how to take better pics too thru WC :) ) ... is that this was my 3rd I believe attempt at a portrait.... I got such great help, support and encouragement through this one (albeit the portrait forum) ... but I learnt so much, and this one I mark as a turning point for me

I thought it was so nice to see all the great works together.

Enjoyed seeing your entries, but did not know what I should choose from my own work. Afraid of just standing on the sidelines and commenting without participating, I forced myself to choose two from my work. It sort of depended on your comments in the past. I find it soooo difficult to rate my work!

Love the entries of you'all so far!

Oh, I think "closies" are probably ok. It just means you won't post them in a 2003 retrospective! :)
This is looking really good already! Can't wait to see more.
I haven't even posted my own yet. I wouldn't know which are my "best"..will have to go with my favourites.

I have to say I love seeing the enlarged version of this piece. Now I can see the free and gestural painting strokes on the primrose pot and the pears. They add just the right amount of movement and flair!!!

Oh and that yellow pitcher - it did come out great.

Just noticed the rich green you used for the shadows. Excellent choice.

I didn't join WC til the end of 2002 and although I posted my favorites in the Animal section originally they're both commissioned pastels done in 2002. This is the first project I've ever signed up for - because it was so easy - so I don't know how you do the commenting thing yet. But, all entries are great!

This would be my choice for how a portrait should be painted. It has realism but could never be mistaken for a photo. It's so painterly. The color choices are perfect.

To both of you,
You can't imagine how good you made this granny feel, only been painting a year, no training. I paint things I like, not necessarily pleasing to all. I lost the comment when I posted the first one. It's full name is Uluru Dreaming. One of my fav. places. Have been there several times. Bang in the centre of Aussie. I,m painting two parrots now, having trouble with the feathers. Also very bright.

I have never done a project like this! I just keep learning!
This is my winner for the year. It is showing right now and was a bit stretch in a lot of ways.
I had just started doing landscape in pastel, I had just begun playing with textured paper and board and it was done from photos taken the night before of a rather historic storm.
Just very special.

I just got a gallery...(we won't go into that) and it was Cowboy Artist's of America week so I did it in one evening to fit a frame I had inherited.
I think it is the most traditional looking of my Native Americans and a lot more traditionally pastel.

To djstar,

I love you paintings, totally different subjects to mine, and different style. Maybe I should have a go at something else. I do paint Australian aboriginals , dogs, and the occasional bird, and they would be more traditional pastels. .
Uluru Dreaming was done on black sanded paper, as was Frog Tapestry. This is a favourite surface. I left some of the black in the sandy ground of the desert in Frog Tapestry. Thanks for the reply.

Is this a sibling to another swan you did?
This has so much color in white yet it still reads as white. A very delicate balancing act!
All of yours are quite remarkable.

dj, this is the one and only swan I've ever painted, thanks for the comps, I was pleased with the 'white' too as no white was actually used there

Mo ~ beautiful, beautiful colours. This reminds me of a silk painting ~ the blues are so luminous. Can you tell me what the dimensions are, what support you used, etc?

cairns nomad ~ I do love the blue sky, red earth, white bark and rich green foliage of Australian landscapes. On my trips to North Queensland and Sydney I found myself really envying artists there the intense colour that surrounds them... Here in England everything is so grey. Saw some great art in Cairns, too: all kinds of creativity going on there.

Lovely painting.

I can't imagine living anywhere else, I have travelled around my country many times, hope to leave again in June. Health permitting. Always a consideration as you get older. Think painting this country keeps me going! Glad you enjoyed the painting.

This project is a delight for someone like me who did not begin lurking on the threads until last December. I've gottent o know many of you through your works over the last four months, but it is a delight to view some of the works I've not seen before. There is sure a lot of talent around here!

Stunning landscape! The coloration is reminiscent of our American Southwest, but the flora is completely unique. I guess I'll have to add Australia to my wishlist of places to visit. I've seen so many fascinating paintings and photographs from down under, I've a great itch to explore for myself.

There are so many wonderful paintings here. Some I remember well while people were struggling through them and others I never saw. Too many to try to comment on..I didn't see anything I didn't think was terrific.
This is one heck of a bunch of talented people here!
And...helpful too!
