Honest opinions (no really, honest ones) needed. :D

I have an assignment for a drawing class to strictly use lessons learned, and nothing beyond what we have covered in the classroom. So far we have talked about perspective points, implied lines, and touched on tone and triangular composition.

So I've constructed a few cubes, using implied lines to constuct the entire piece (how creative can you get with cubes anyway in a beginner's class ?!?).

I attempted to use the darkest shades to imply the triangular composition, then used corners (seen and unseen) of the four cubes below to define the parameters of the cube above. All cubes below are also arranged using implied lines. My implied lines all connect to at least three corners of a cubular structure, and I have drawn them in for the untrained eye to easily grasp (the line furthest to the left goes through two corners of that cube, but the digicam chopped it off).

Would y'all smart comp people let me know how this looks. This will be my first public showing of anything I've done (students work will be displayed in the gallery for a month! :D ) and I'm nervous as heck! :o .

I am aiming to show real understanding and application of all of the points listed above. Thanks for any comments. :)

Cheers!
- Greg

LOL Man I need more coffee to understand all that ...and then some...lol!
From what I gather..you need to represent......shading, line, and composition(triangle wise) and you are to do this with Cubism?
Well the only thing I can suggest at this point...
Is that you have the cubism...but the shadowing could be more utilized. For example, the cube on the far left, has a wonderful effect and keeps it set back from the one in front of it. Use your shadows to enhance your dimensions, which of course is a huge factor in cubism. Without it, you lose dimension!
On the lines....You can liven them up as well...take them from dark to light to. Vanishing lines enhance drama, so take the line from a stage 10 (darkest and heaviest) to a stage 1 and 0 (lightest to nothing). Make sense?
Remember> Shading equals value changes which creates depth

yes before anything else, double check your perspective...and what you said left me in the dust too. :) Can you simplify your assignment for us?

one other thing...I don't see a triangular composition...

A triangular composition follows the implied lines of a triangle...I think that's what your assignment is talking about?

Thanks everyone! I'll try to clarify here.

I've identified a couple rouge perspective lines below (in yellow) and the horizon line (also in yellow). I'll be sure to fix them since they really drag everything outta wack. Didn't even notice it until Dark_Shades mentioned it and started doublechecking on the image.

The blue line shows an implied line intersecting three corners of cubes. I carefully measured out the lower cubes, and as I had hoped, the corners of them let me create the cube above them. From points 1 and 2, I followed the line until it hit a verticle line above the horizon and plotted point 3. The other lines you see in pencil are similiar to this.

I agree I need some more shading, but the shading in person really is better than here. In person, that paper is white... stupid #)&@#$*$ digicam!

The red block areas are the implied triangular shape. Again, this is much more fluid and obvious on the paper than it is in the picture you see here.

Ugh, only 6 more hours to fix it! LOL

Cheers!

To let you all know...

Out of 70 students, 25 of which submitted work for this exhibition... I was one of four who got an "Honorable Mention", the highest awards given to the Drawing I students. :)

I will be presented Sunday with the award for 'Outstanding Technical Composition' at the closing ceremonies.

Thanks everyone for their input, I learned a ton

Cheers!
