Okay...this goes out to folks that attended my recent sessions in the foundation series, "For Reasons Paintings Work"
For the time being, I'm catching up on commissions, various projects...but we'll be looking to get a new series going in the next couple months.
You that have attended have some idea of my style...work I've done, work I do...and now just curious what areas of instruction you might like to see a series put together on.
thanks..
Larry

Thank you for asking, Larry, and for your previous sessions! I very much enjoyed them and learned much. I've put together a short list of what I'd like further study on. Some of these you touched on in your first set of lessons but I believe further instruction/exploration would be beneficial:
*Making the right color choices - and why.
*When and why a cool or warm color choice is appropriate and the exceptions.
*Painting effective/spectacular water reflections (still water, moving water).
*Exploring various supports using different mediums.
*Painting with Gouache.
I'm looking forward to reading others' suggestions and the next round of lessons!

Larry, thank you for the wonderful webinars on Tuesdays I learned many things in just one hour. In regard to ideas for New Series I'd like to add one more to Elizabeth's and that is "PEOPLE IN THE LANDSCAPE".

What about something like : the right brushwork to obtain a self-confident painterly effect.
Thanks.

Hi Larry,
I loved your class on underpainting with compliments, and would like to see some more, perhaps different colors of underpainting in the same painting.
Also interested learning how to harmonize colors, and painting with a limited palette. Would love some gouache techniques, also.
Thanks,
Emilie

Larry,
If you could teach us how you went from painting in a very literal style to suggestive - that would be great!!

thanks Michele..
I thought I more or less covered that...but are you asking for specific demonstrations how I painted more realistically...and would you like to see a demo of an alarm clock set up doing the "ready set go!" push I did to force myself...
trying to better understand...thanks

I'd like to see a series on how to abstract the visual kernel of landscapes.
I know the theory, but it would be great to see how you break down various scenes... especially since, even though I know the theory (find the big color spots; put them down; then refine each of the spots), I'll be doggoned if I can ever manage it.
Just how do you ignore the huge welter of details and decide what's really important?
Watching how you do that -- and talk us through the process -- for a variety of settings (woods, fields, waterfalls, houses....) would be incredibly informative!

Hi Larry - this doesn't have to do with painting, at least initially, but it does have to do with preparation if you're working from a photo. How do you go about using Photoshop to enhance the colors in a photo to make it something you can work from (when you aren't able to paint outdoors and you have to work in the studio)? I know you have shown examples of drab photos, and you enlivened them via Photoshop I believe. I've tried this and am doing something wrong because my colors end up way to harsh or are garish....not sure if there is a particular order/set of options you use every time, in a certain sequence, or not....anyway, would be interesting to learn since the computer can be helpful when it comes to bringing photos to life, and/or back to the way you remember seeing the scene in the first place.
Thanks! Steve

I'll be sharing the paints, materials I use in the webinar...
but basically I revert back to a mixed bag of my former acrylic palette of years, the split primary palette...that is, a warm and cool color temperature of each of the primaries...
Prussian Blue, Ultramarine Blue...Sky blue...Alizarin, Cad red medium...Lemon yellow or Hansa yellow...yellow ocre, white, black, viridian or phthalo green...
I use smaller synthetic brushes...flats, rounds...and sometimes a rubber tipped tool used in clay sculpturing...plus a paint knife...1-1/4" Richeson diamond shape...
I'll buy Strathmore #400 series black presentation board, or buy a couple varied colored sheets of matboard from my framer...acid free emphasized, and cut those up. I have heavy watercolor paper as well...but not my favorite...unless perhaps I tone it first...
for painting outdoors in cold weather or slow down drying time, I'll pick up a bottle of glycerin at the pharmacy...

Gooseberry Falls...8"x 10"
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/21-Jan-2012/532-seiler_gooseberryfalls_blackmat.jpg
picked up a half-dozen works from my framer today...several going off to Mountainsong Gallery in Carmel By the sea...
framed, matted up another one...with black mat, having a hunch the black might set off the color more...the energy. Seems to me that white mats suck a bit of the life out of color. White being cool in nature....

Beautiful, Larry.
Is there a date for your gouache sessions start? Can't wait to sign up.
Also I have been very impatient for the downloads from your last session to be made available since I was in Europe most of the time the webinars were on and couldn't manage to stay up late enough, and I want to see them. (The only one I managed to connect to was the one where the power went out.) I know it's out of your hands; just wonder what's keeping them.

Well...they want about three weeks to promote it...but not until the material of the last session is made available.

apparently some technical difficulties...that is being worked on...
its been a while...and is out of my hands. Just trying patiently to wait it out, but spend my time working/preparing for the next one...
thanks Wendy...
