My main focus was on creating a sense of distance using multiple planes and chess pieces while keeping the trees predominant. Also tried some water reflections. I'd like to understand better how to make my foregrounds, bushes and water more refined. Great exercise, I'm really looking forward to the water course!

Oil on MDF, 8x8

This is my second try at Homework #2 (Johannes you said to post here). I can see the bushes need a more abstract shape. I'm still using WN raw sienna but I found a tiny bit of yellow ochre in an old tube and found that adding just a bit of cad yellow plus white I got pretty close to the yellow ochre so this one is, I hope, more harmonious.

Please keep in mind I don't have a camera and am using my cell phone so quality isn't the best. Hopefully I'll get a camera next week if all goes well.

Also, where do you find those frames? Do you have to download them or are they somewhere in photoshop?

Now on to this weeks homework!

Here is my homework for week 3. It is a very hurried small 6 x 8 oil painting this week as I have 3 little granddaughters staying with me and trying to paint as well.

Here's my painting from a crop of the Class 3 homework reference photo. It's pastel on 12x9 Art Spectrum sanded paper.

I was finished with my painting before I realized I hadn't progressed from hard (NuPastels) to soft pastels. Still, I like the way it came out and will definitely stick to NuPastels from now on until I get it right as the soft pastels are very hard to make changes to without getting pasty.

I did use some Great American soft pastels for the sky and highlights on the golden tree and water.

Michele

P.S. Ooh, looking at it now I see some clones to fix. ;)

Johannes, the painted is on 140 rough 7x10. I also used some mop brushes for the first time 4,6,8, they work great.

It would be nice to get the painting clearer.

Sorry for the poor photo - light stinks today and the painting is very wet so I keep getting shine.
ok - I think my values are all too close. But if I work it anymore it will be too muddy. It needs to dry. Still not enough depth and planes in the trees. Yhin I need more hard edges.

Ted, your trees are wonderful. The sky is lovely and soft, as well. Don't know what a mop brush is but I think you've hit on something great. I enjoy seeing all of the different compositions and mediums here.

this is an 8 x10 acrylic (which darked of course) and i see a clone or two of course. I would have prefered to do it in oil but didn't figure it would dry in time. One of these times I will get it all together and have this with the painting. It ended up separated from this. Jeanette

On Monday I did this trying for fast. So I took about an hour and twenty minutes--yes, that's fast for me. Then today I was going to do another, trying for faster and simpler.... and I got to tinkering on this one instead. So I used up my painting time, and I don't know that I "improved" it any. sigh. If I grab a little more time, I'll try again. (pastel on Art Spectrum, 6x8)

Lol - thanks, Colleen. I seem to put violet everywhere - you can see it in closer tree, bush, and bank shadows. Guess I just like the color. :) (Does that help create color harmony? I dunno.)

Try Reply to Thread and then upload using this button (below)...then Browse, Upload and click on the image to complete the process. BTW, I typically keep my photos to no bigger than 6 inches before I upload. HTH

I did this over - and over - and over. My first one still too globby.:( Then my husband looked at it and suggested that I cut back on the really tall tree and increase the value contrast. He knows nothing of painting but is a trained photographer and has a very good eye for composition.

Second try still not happy with results and so many of the submissions are so very good! But that is why I am taking a class so obviously I need more practice, practice, practice.:crying:

I could still fiddle with this one for quite a while, but it's late and have to get it in, so I guess it's done. The water turned out a little garish... I found this to be a very difficult exercise. The pine behind the cottonwoods didn't start out as cone shaped, but suffered from various revisions. Oh well...
