Welcome to What's on Your Easel for the month of October 2011!

If needed, please remember to place the butt icon.

Please post your oil paintings that you are currently working on or have just finished.

Everyone is welcome to post in this thread - Newbies and experts, as long as the work is in oil paint!

For the most part, this is a “show and tell” thread, if you would like more detailed help or critiques, the main oil forum would be the place to post and ask.

Hot day in London today so was able to return to Wimbledon Common and have another plein air attempt at a scene I painted last week. I didn't tone the canvas, which I thought may have been a problem, but think I've got away with it. Part of this exercise was to try and capture the values better; having looked at a grey-scale of this I feel I've got closer. Have to keep on trying to move up that learning curve! This is 11 x 14 on gesso'ed board.

Comments and criticism very welcome, thanks for looking.

Nice work Graham, you definately succeeded with the values here and have a nice variety of greens. I like this a lot. It really has been hot one today, and more to come tomorrow, its not often plein airers need sunscreen in October in the UK!

Graham - Love the Greens. Makes you want to pack a Picnic Lunch....

How hot is hot in London? Today high is 86 F or 30 C - This is a nice temperature in California where I live.

Happy Painting. :)

Graham, I like your little plein air! Good job.
Wow.....that is warm for London at this time. I'm such a sorry lot that I didn't even get outside today. I painted all morning finishing the painting i'm about to post, and ate lunch and fell asleep for three hours in my lounge chair! I've been sick with a cold and worked 3 twelve hour night shifts last week so guess I just needed to catch up on sleep. Hate that I missed the pretty day though!
I started this in the summer and just got around to finishing it. It's from an old Kodachrome slide from 1959. I loved it so much when I saw the slide that I asked permission to paint it from the son who posted it.

Kay: I knew that was yours as soon as I saw it. Fabulous looking ladies and fabulous painting too.

Graham: That is one of the best plein airs I have seen from you. I love the foliage colors . I am unsure about the path on the left and where it leads though. A bit ambiguous.

Joy: You have an excellent start- I think it will be a great looking trio when you are done, How brave to put three people in a painting when you are so new to portraits.

Irwin: Very nice looking portrait- you have the values down pat. Now you need to try some color!

Lillemut- it is gorgeous. Is that you in the reflection taking a picture? I would have thought you were working from life. I have never tried a still life from a photo- although sometimes flowers because they don't last too long.

sicantik: Nice contrast with the red of the little girl's shirt and the green in the background.

A great start to the month already!

Shadwell - good progress I see, it starts too look nice and three dimensional. This will get great when finished.

Joy - a great start on the group portrait. Not an easy subject I guess, but it looks great so far.

Graham - I really like that Plein Air ... I have not seen all you posted here I guess, but from the ones I have seen this is the best I think.

Kay - This is really a great picture of a very difficult subject. I really like it.

Irwin - Great portrait, great brushwork.

Susanne - this is really great, just like the grape one from the other thread.

Sicantik - This looks great. I like the reflection in the calm water and the mood of it.

Nora - Great painting, one can feel the movement and muscle tension of the guy going on in it.

_______

I have not much too offer. Had the most unusual experience today, after being lazy taking a nap until 17:30 o'clock I woke up and the unusually urge to grab my stuff and go out ... must have been one of those "grab your brush and paint" moments Graham mentioned the other day. I left the tripod at home to save a bit time and only took the box on my knees. Only had about 40 minutes to sunset and rushed the foliage, so I'm not happy at all with the foliage at all. But I will keep it to be remembered of the day. The close up was taken back in my flat, those I made outside were no good. It's my third plein air .. the weather is just getting to my liking, all since I have the box earlier this year it was either too hot or too wet outside. I hope for a dry autumn and a nice winter to do some more plein airs.

I've been working this weekend on a rush project: two eight by eight gallery wraps for October at my gallery. Both are fairly simple because of time constraints, but I think they'll do. I need to have them in by Wednesday afternoon, and they're still wet.

Not only that, but I still need to paint the gallery-wrap edges and hope all the dimensions dry in time. It's just straight oil paint, because I was out of Liquin, which does help with drying time!

Nora, very nice sunrise plein air - I like it a lot.

This one is now finished. Not sure how much I like it. Handrails on the stairs were a pain to do. Some areas of the green paint have come out very glossy (which makes taking a photo of the painting without glare next to impossible), I’m hoping that will settle out as it dries. If not then a coat of varnish should level everything out anyway.

C & C very welcome, thanks!

In some parts the paint is too thin, but I like the effect.
I was not successful in gradually darkening the lower background.
Usually I dont sign, but I put my signature here to cover some of the empty space :o . Should I move it lower?
Also, does the background look dirty to you?

Because you asked....:) I think you would do well to use more paint. Oils tend to become transparent over time, especially when they are applied thinly. That's good if you have a light color underneath the top layers because it will give a luminous look to the painting. But if you have dark lines underneath they will begin to show through. Thicker paint is easier to work with also because then you can soften edges- a real plus when you are doing portraits. It's also more fun once you get used to it. :)

I think your signature is fine where it is.

Nancy: I like what you have done with the desertscape. I will be heading to AZ next week for some painting (the Grand Canyon!) and I cannot wait!

The ONLY thing I would be careful of is putting too bright a color all by itself close to the edge-- the orange near the bottom really draws my eye away from the interesting patterns inside the painting.

Enjoy your trip to The Gand Canyon! It is one of my favorite places. Your plein airs never fail to amaze me.

Those are coyotes, not wolves, but it is very hard to tell at this stage as they are very roughly sketched in. I an not used to quite this big of a canvas - yesterday I blocked color into the upper left corner - and trying to keep my brush sizes large.

Zoi, you have been advancing in your skills wonderfully, and if I were you I would take advantage of Nora's advice; I always do! Beautiful lady and scarf!

Nora, that's your wonderful cad. orange down there, but it has moved, per your recommendation. Congrats on the trip to the Grand Canyon! Can I go with you? I like your soybean field, (but I don't like soy!) and I especially like the way you've let the light of the sky crumble the edges of the foreground tree! So very real!

Here's a 4"x 4" gallery wrap I did today of fresh bread. I haven't painted the edges yet but will wrap the towel and hot-pad around the edge a bit. I don't want to spend much time on it, because it's for our gallery show in November and the price is limited to $25.00. I have one more to do for that show and will post when I have it.

That is a nice little painting Becca! I like everything about it, particularly the way her hat shades her face. Do you find the ellipses of hats difficult?

I think maybe if one simply paints what one sees, instead of thinking 'hat' or 'cup' for instance, it is much easier. And practice. I think Nancy is the reigning queen, because of her commercial art background.

!becca

Thanks for the nice words about my plein airs, gals! :) I am so looking forward to the trip. I wish you could go too Nancy! I have never been and may never go again as it is pretty far away from where I live.

Nancy and Marcia: The cadmium orange is so wonderful because when it lays next to the green is makes the green greener, yet if you need to mute that green it does the job and stays warm. An awesome color, along with cadmium red light, which can make such quiet tones with Ultramarine Blue or grab attention when it needs to. I think it is the brightest red out there (leaning toward yellow) and the only one that makes a warm pink when mixed with white.

Hello! I don't think I've posted in this thread before, although a few years ago I posted a couple of things in the old "Small Stuff" thread. Most of my art experience has been in drawing mediums - pen, pencil, OPs (although OPs are sort of a drawing/painting medium) - but now I'm focusing on oils. It's sure different wielding a brush, vs using a pen or pencil! So for now, I'm trying to get the hang of using a brush to apply pigment. Here are some oil sketches I just completed.

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/08-Oct-2011/85002-DSCN7404_tomato_final.jpg
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/08-Oct-2011/85002-DSCN7364_Pen_FINAL.jpg

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/08-Oct-2011/85002-DSCN7412_eggplant_final_REV.jpg

Although you easily can see my struggles in applying the paint to the canvas in a couple of these - the pen and the palette knife were especially challenging - all in all, I'm pleased with them. It feels good to be moving forward. Thanks for looking!

P.S. I'm using gamblin sketching oils, because one of the things that - for far too long - was preventing me from painting was a paralyzing fear of wasting expensive paint! I also painted all these sketches on one piece of 11x14 canvas paper. The sketching oils are affordable, yet seem to handle very nicely. Since I don't plan on creating any masterpieces for a while yet, these work for me. :D

Becca: Thanks for your kind words. As I look through this thread further, I'm wondering if I posted my studies in the wrong place, as I realize this thread seems populated with paintings and WIPS, not little sketches like my own. But I'm not certain where beginners sketches such as mine should really go. I'd love to get feedback, as I feel I've benefited so much from comments and pointers from more experienced artists here at WC, but I hesitated to post these in the main forum. Any ideas about where sketches should go?

BTW, I've looked through a few of these WOYE threads now, and have to say kudos to you, Becca, for always responding with a kind word to - as far as I could see - every person who has posted a painting here.

Sees for Miles, 30 x 30, oil on linen

Otter Breastplates were worn by the Plains Indians and were commonly decorated with Trade Mirrors
Fur traders introduced Trade Mirrors to the American Indians in the 17th century. Reflective surfaces were thought to have mystical powers and these mirrors were quickly adopted for use as decorative additions to warbonnets, otter breastplates and bustles, as well as for signaling mirrors.

Nancy, Becca, Z, thanks for the kind words!

Marcia, great-looking coyotes. The subject matter is after my own heart - I'm a bit of a desert dog myself.

Kittie, beautiful landscape.

Sharon and jules, those are both looking really good.

Brunella, nice job with that manganese violet. This one is going to have a madder glaze on the shirt:

Just a simple ebauche right now. Doesn't look like her anymore, unfortunately, but that often happens - let the tweaking begin!

Wonderful work here this month. Outstanding portraits!

I usually have about 3 or 4 paintings in progress at the same time, and in various stages, using a couple of different methods, and this month is no exception.

First, here is one that I have just completed this month. I am waiting to varnish it:
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/15-Oct-2011/13079-Shy_04.jpg
"Shy"...16" x 20" oil on linen (Sunflower from my back yard)

This is in the grisaille stage, nearly ready for the first color glazes (Showing a couple of work-up stages):
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/15-Oct-2011/13079-Visitor_01.jpg

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/15-Oct-2011/13079-Visitor_02.jpg
"Visitor"...16" x 20" oil on linen (This subject is a composite, but I may have gotten the flower from our Reference Image Library.)

The following painting is in progress, and it, too may have come from our Reference Image Library, but I don't remember where I got it. If someone recognizes it as their photo, I'd like to say "Thank you," for posting it in the RIL I am using this as a demo piece for the students that I have in an oil painting class that I am teaching. Everyone in the class is working on the same image, from the same ref. photo. It seems to make for good teaching.
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/15-Oct-2011/13079-Journey_01.jpg
"Journey"...16" x 20" oil on canvas

I have been trying to paint mountains effectively for quite some time, and I'm pleased with my efforts on this one. This is still in progress, and it needs much more work, but my underpainting seems to be working well for the detail I'm applying on top of it. Foreground greens are still in the underpainting stage, and the front trees are in progress, as well. There is also a small "gap" in the middle, where I will eventually paint a couple of figures walking on the path. I teach a simple, layered approach, and I begin with a drawing in charcoal, and begin my painting by roughing in using full color, going for the darks and lights. I seldom use a grisaille when painting landscapes.

Well I am painting a picture of my grand from a photo and it's just in the beginning stages. Any input will be welcome.
It is in oil. I may be having a small challenge in getting the skin tone right, she is african-canadian but not dark skinned nor too light skinned.

thanks Here is the finished painting. Comments please? This is my first oil portrait/profile painting. It is of my grand daughter

Painting looks better than actual photo ofit I took.

Lawrence, I'm eager to see the next stage of this portrait!

Bill and Mark, you both have a large variety of subjects to paint! And you paint with love, which is makes every one of them very special. Beautiful work!:D

Dogpound, your values are very similar; you might try a bit more contrast between the background and profile, and within the face itself, to make the cheek look rounder you can use cool color, like a green or blue mix, under the eye and gradually subsume that mix in a warm flesh tone like sienna with a little rose color. that's the way to fool the eye into thinking of the face in depth rather than on a flat surface as paintings are.

If the photo is bad, get rid of it and ask her to play with a toy or something while you observe her right side from life. You'll train yourself much better from life than from a photo (which is already two-dimensional!).:wink2:

Here's my plein air for the day from our party celebrating the merger of our three galleries: Contemporary Art Gallery, Summer Wine, and Visions, into the Paseo Creek Galleries. There were also two other artists doing demos, but one does abstract, and the other brought a portrait he had been working on. I painted from life a beautiful gallery across the street from us, and I will need to make some tweaks from a photo I took as well, because of all the wrought iron and other complexities that are on the building. The owners really loved it! 11" x 14" on Linen Panel. 2 hours. I left it on the French half-easel because my other easels have wet paintings on them.

Wow, there's some lovely work this month, as usual! The WOYE threads are always so interesting and diverse. I was really drawn to the bold and abstract landscapes and plain aires full of texture and color. Really awesome!!!!

Here's one of the paintings in progress on my *ladder* my tabletop easel just wouldn't cut it for this one, but thankfully we happen to have a wooden ladder with what I guess is a little shelf to hold paint cans that's now doing double duty as a makeshift easel. Christmas is coming though, isn't it? :crossfingers:

This is my largest painting to date, 24x30" on gallery wrap canvas. I was nervous to start something so large; stared and walked by the at the sketch for weeks (chicken). But I loved doing it so much, I went out and bought bigger ones @ 36"x36", lordy.

This is a fabulous thread and I find it very hard to keep up - it is very difficult to come in half-way through and only comment on the most recent paintings, so if I get left behind, I feel I cannot contribute at all!

Anyway, I managed to catch up today:

Paul - super plane and castle
Joy - interesting portrait & dog
Graham - Mr Prolific with Wimbledon, stairway Putney, Wittering, Kit surfers, Putney Pier, Under bridge? 6 paintings in total!
Kay - Loving Brian's mom & friend, Estella & Degas' Muse
Irwin - A tennis icon, Björn Borg (I remember him well) and Steve Jobs beautifully painted
Susanne - Lovely Teapot & Plums
Om Im - Super painting of Bogor Palace & your Daughter as well as the new portrait
Nora - You have been very busy this month, with the ball player, sunrise, a bean field and the church - phew!
Dustonpaper - Great plein air
Becca - I commented before but these are well painted cowboys and girls
Nancy - You join Graham in the prolific stakes - the moon, that wonderful sky, black mesa, your plein air, the loaf & your pretty china are all so well painted.
Calin4thewin - the master copy is coming along very well
Bill - Perfectly painted sunflower, iris and landscape, of course
Marcia - Super Bobcat and Coyotes (NOT wolves)
K Henderson - the cookies are making me hungry & Native American portrait is fabulous
Dandelion 6 - lovely madonna painting that is developing well
Kittie - wow at the colour in all your paintings: knife landscapes & the flower, I also love Summer's Demise
Zoi - what a lovely portrait
AnnieA - you have painted some great still lifes here
Llawrence - portraits are coming along beautifully
Jules - motorbike is developing nicely
David - I love the soft beauty of your landscape through the trees
z - your still lifes are just great
Brunella - the gourds look fabulous
Dogpound - your granddaughter is beautiful and you are painting her so well
Sharon - lovely apple painting despite the photo's fuzziness
Mark H - Loving your still life, red rooftops and grandmother paintings
Twix - Your giant horse painting is looking great

Phew. I need to lay down for a bit now!

Everyone is doing such beautiful work. I'm not going to be able to keep up. It moves way to fast and I'm not familiar with anyone anymore. I'll need to make a list before it gets out of control. Anyway...just a bit more work on "Copper Cup IV" and it's done. The photo was taken on an angle to preven glare.
Thank you for looking.

Brunella...absolutely gorgeous Bravo:clap:
I think this is fixed enough so calling it finished. At least the peach doesn't look like it belongs on Carmen Mirand's head.
PS: another photo on an angle.

Calling this one finished, but I'm no good with titles! There's a bit of glare on the left hand side; I need a course in how to take better pictures of artwork...

Oil on canvas, 24x30"

And this little piece was an experiment in bolder colors, somewhat. Completed mostly with palette knife with some brushwork for the details.

Oil on board, 9x12" (I think)

And I'm throwing in the towel on this one as well :P It was a real stuggle to get the highlights somewhat correct, since my reference photo was partially in heavy shade from a large tree, but I decided to stick her in the desert, full sun!:wink2:

"Desert Kiss" Oil on board, 11x14

Lillemut, those pears are WOW  I love them, you've handled the grisaille so well, can't wait to see it finished!

KittieRue, of course I love your horse portrait. I'm envious of your use of color.

Becca, the depth of your landscape comes across nicely, its a pleasant scene you've depicted there.

michelangelo, the sense of light is well depicted in your still-life.

Twix04...Nice job on the horses. I find them very hard to capture. You've done a beautiful rendering.

I love your feeling of movement. I haven't yet graduated to that point, yet. Maybe soon, though.
