Welcome to the Oily Rag for October 2011. This is where we invite you to share your photographs and works in other media. You may also post events and other happenings, and always you can come and chat! :)
The third Saturday of the month is sort of a cyber paint out. It is Spirit Day, where we can all paint together in spirit and share our results. Join us.:)

I'm gonna do swap awards again this time around.
I really hope I get something..I have a jinx for awards. The first art competition I entered for a cash award, I won....haven't won any since until this years state fair. I am hoping that means the jinx is lifted, but I can't be sure.
Of course, everyone is going to have such spectacular stuff, I am looking forward to seeing it all.

Hi everyone,
Here are some older works (1 oil pastel, "Straight Right" and 1 ballpoint pen, "Mask of Tutankhamun") that I finally got framed.... but the pix were taken right before that, to prevent glass glare. The Tut one has a detail shot too:).
Just wanted to show you my stuff before I 'graduated' to oil painting (the King of mediums, IMHO)
!becca
10-01-2011, 01:53 AM
Alan, that is some fabulous stuff! You should be very proud! You oils are no doubt be amazing.

!becca, NancyMP,
Thanks for the kind words. Alas, I am as 'unknown' in Orange Co. as anywhere else, but since they're framed now, I may enter them in the LA county/Orange Co. fairs next year.
The King Tut one was over 16 months in development but neither the Bic company nor Artist's mag really cared (I entered it in one of their competitions, I don't remember which one).
I love working with oils, just hate the learning curve after some 'competency' with pen and ink/oil pastels. It's coming along, though:).
!becca
10-01-2011, 07:45 AM
Good morning everyone.
Alan, there is a learning curve to any new media, even changing paint brands or your palette can require some adjustments. That challenge is part of what keeps it fun and interesting.
Nancy, cute pic, I think we have all had days like that!

Sid most times pepole comment on my language it is more like i dont understand a word of what you try to say and i have to admit sometimes i uninteional drop words out in my typeing/talk. was out and did a drawing of a "vase" but then it got gray anyway tried to slab on some paint after that. it is about 1.5 h until i should go so i could practise some more drawing i could try this copper pot aswell if it would get to easy on the vase
!becca
10-01-2011, 09:19 AM
Bjorn, it is great that you are working on your drawing, it is an important factor.
These late mornings are confusing my efforts...I had hoped to paint today, but found myself waiting around to go outside first ..now it is later than I realized. Maybe I will manage to paint though. After i start the water and do a few other things.

Becca, should we set a date for the grand "opening" yet?:)
Sid, both you and Bjorn write the way you think, and I always have to smile (or even laugh!) the way you phrase things. :o

10-01-2011, 03:21 PM
Great work, Alan, as ever!
Sid, I am liking your bellydancer and was chuffed when two of my bellydancing friends came to my talk today to give their support. Bellydancers are special people, you know.
Becca - that does look scary. How long are you leaving him up there for?
Nancy, why are you so tired - I hope you are OK?
Carey, happy October to you too!
Jessica - I am looking forward to hearing about the Medieval fayre!
Tina - any packages arrived at your place yet?
Björn - your English is excellent -where did you learn it?
Stella - hope you are having a good Saturday!
I survived my talk, in fact it was very good and I didn't shake or quake as much as I thought I would and only had one awkward moment where I forgot my place! So many people came to support me and the room was packed. I am glad it is behind me now though.
Above all, I am delighted that I pushed myself to do something that I feared!

Becca, we all know how lovely your butterfly paintings are, so why would you break into tears? I don't know how many times I've submitted something I considered excellent to a show, and had it overlooked for something else, but it's just part of daring to enter shows. Take heart, be brave, and have fun!
Rolina, you sound like you had a wonderful day with your talk, but it is tiring when you're not used to it, isn't it? I'm glad you were so well received!
I had been shorting myself on sleep recently, and I guess it all just caught up with me today - it's lucky that I live in such a quiet neighborhood!

Hello everyone, just four pages to catch up with, I think I can manage that :).
Alan, your work is awesome. King Tut in biro, really, wow! I really would like to own that. Unfortunately skill and time arent always valued, but amongst artists you are appreciated.
Bjorn, if you go to the Odd show (I like all the funnies you can make with his name) I would be really interested to hear all your thoughts, impressions and views of anything and everything to do with his work. I have a couple of his books and the plates are wonderful, so although I think the book that accompanies the show will be interesting I feel I have already contributed enough to his wealth in that way. Anyway, I forgot to do the lottery today so the odds (geddit) of me actually going myself are poor but I wont give up hope - its on till December. Beef Wellington sounds wonderful, it sounds like you had an enjoyable day.............. its been so hot here today its back to salad and the like for us.
Marcia, I love that cat photo, its just brilliant.
Becca, I wanted to comment on your cowboy painting but I cant remember where I saw it. Anyway, I thought it was excellent and hope you get around to a whole series from your refs.
I keep falling asleep every time I sit down, since Wednesday I havent been able to muster any energy - am I getting old? I tried and energy drink, one of those caffeine boosters but it made me feel sick. I have an all day art workshop tomorrow but although I love it I dont feel like it, and its a fifty mile drive each way. I know that nothing to you Americans but it is quite a distance here in blighty. Maybe my mojo will be back tomorrow.
Sandra, I am so pleased you arrived safe and well. I am still soooooooooo excited for you.
Sid, I just read that W&N are your favourite paints, does that include the water miscibles and have you ever tried Cobra? I wont change from WMO's for the time being, although all the Vasari and snob paint talk does intrigue me. Given that see seem to have extensive experience of all brands and a vast scientific knowledge I am interested in your opinions.
Rolina, I am pleased your talk went well. I have a theory that continually testing oneself by doing these things i.e. challenging oneself, helps keep you young at hear.
Do any of you guys use Skype? Its great and really cheap - I used it to call my Mum from the UK to US nearly everyday for about two years when she was ill.
Nancy, I also wanted to comment properly about your plein air from your trip, I really did like it especially the palette. I hope you are caught up on your sleep now.
Becca, looking at that husband lifting machine makes me go all wibbly inside - I cant stand heights and dont know which would be worse the responsibility of manoevering someone, or actually being up there. Hope you dont have to do that too often.
Now................what else did I have to say....................ah yes.....
MY FIRST PACKAGE ARRIVED TODAY
In the stress and worry of creating and sending I hadnt really thought much about the thrill of receiving..
so I am very excited.............its like Christmas.....yippeee.

stape and sandra, i knew you guys would get that one, sandra said it all!
Tina, i have been testing out various brands for quite a while, i almost decided on Utrecht as my favorite brand but they are just a bit on the thick side and i don't like that. So after all things considered like price, quality, choice of pigments, consistency, etc. I keep on coming right back to Winsor Newton artist line (not wintons). I have not tried any Cobras but I have used lots of Winsor Artisan water mix paints. I have also used Lukas quite a bit and I love them too. But lately when I want to go oil-less and with water only, I am opting more for acrylics than for water mixable oils.

hi stapsie and beccs,
don't go postal on my behind for mentioning acrylics again  not to worry,
not ditching water mixables altogether, just steering towards more acrylics when i want to just do water, maybe some watercolors which I used to love quite a bit, and i love just plain drawing and need to do some colored pencil stuff too, i would even like to crochet a shawl, 'specially if rolina would teach me.

Sid, interesting about your continuing to gravitate towards W&N. In a lot of pigments, I really am the same. Their consistency is really great, I think.

Tina and Rolina, do Europeans have special keyboards so that you can type umlauts over o's, and other diacritical marks? I have Cobalt Violet (Hue) in Daler Rowney. It was cheap, but weak. I always need some punch from my magenta and Dioxazine purple in with it!
What do you use to make Cobalt Violet, Sid?
Speaking of cobalts, I was just reading my Plein Air Magazine how many pelin air peeps have cobalt blue on their palettes. I know Waterhouse used it a lot, and I used it with the Lady of Shallot. But I thought that Ultramarine and Cerulean would cover my blue needs on a limited palette?
Another thing I was thinking while studying their paintings is how beautifully they mix their grays. I guess I'm lazy, but I like the Torrit gray (and thank you!) for starters and just adding a warm or cool color to it as needed. Is that kosher?
stapeliad
10-01-2011, 10:05 PM
I haven't tried my cobalt violet yet.
Nance, yes Ultramarine and cerulean could def cover all your blue needs. But that doensn't mean you can't try cobalt too. Is it the only blue on their palettes?
Do what works for you with the greys...though especially plein air painting i mix my own.

Jess, it seems like overkill to put cerulean, cobalt and ultramarine on my palette, and I had just been using the first and last. Another thing - I could just use my Phtalo blue and Prussian - I want just one intensely saturated blue on my palette so I can step on it when necessary. Prussian is really a nice sky blue when you lighten it, and great for darks in any type of painting.
The reason I don't like to mix grays, especially in plein air, is I try to limit my palette, and I need the right complements or I'm mixing a trio of colors to obtain a gray rather than two if it's already gray.
I'm also trying to plan a palette for Sunday the 19th, when I'm scheduled to do an outdoor demo at the gallery. If I choose to do a plein air, there's a lot of paved streets as well as trees and buildings. My favorite model isn't home yet so I don't know whether he will pose for an outdoor portrait or not. This was the last outdoor portrait I did of him.

The last hour or so I have been trying to figure out if I can crochet this shawl I really want. I've never used this light of yarn before. Problem is, I have two yarns I could use but the one I'd probably prefer to use (a nice dark royal blue) is a bit slippery--and dark, so it's hard for me to see the stitches. The other (white) yarn is very pretty, though, it has an iridescent thread running through it.

Nance, the second one I think is perfect. I can tell what time of day it is and the light is great.
The top one I think is too saturated and dark at the very top. I know the sky does get lighter towards the horizon however for the time of day (mid day?) it looks too dark to me. Remember the sky is the light source...that means that generally speaking it is the lightest value in the landscape. There are exceptions of course, your nice white tree prob being one of them. Stapleton Kearnes says "If you put ANY blue in the sky it is enough".

Saturdays he sometimes has help, but today the guy took off as there is an Octoberfest celebration near by and he felt obligated to help out by patronizing the beer gardens, so it was a full day for me.

Becca, I got a start on one of them, and yes, I had to do another sky, and I experimented with every blue I have. When I think of pale skies, I think of the east coast, when I lived in D.C., and where I frequently visit and paint in New England. Our southwestern skies just appear, well, richer and deeper...or then again, it may be a perceptual flaw in my mind and/or my eyes!
Here's where I am now...

Whew! I have been gone most of the day (and lurking most of the week), and playing 'catch up'
Tina[/B] and Rolina, do Europeans have special keyboards so that you can type umlauts over o's, and other diacritical marks? The only way I can spell Bjorn with the appropriate mark is to compose my message on another program, Microsoft Publisher.
  Or we could just ask Bjorn...how do you type the thingies over the o?
In the systems preferences, Mac users (and presumably windows users) can choose their keyboard layout by nationality. Mac users also have the indispensable character palette, to create umlauts, etc., on the fly.
I have only ever used cobalt blue in my skies, and never ultramarine, as it is too intense. My basic 'sky' color is cobalt blue and white, then add a little yellow ochre and even a smaller amount of cad red light (and make the initial color mix darker than you think you should). Occasionally I will use cerulean blue at the horizon, but I find mixing down the upper 'sky blue' with white and increments of y. ochre and cad red light often work just as well. It will look dull initially, but as the forground is painted in, it perks up and looks more naturally bright.
I left at 4 pm for palm Springs this afternoon with my friend Andy, there was a special showing of our art tours paintings down there to generate interest and get people from 'down there' ($$$) to come up to 'our desert' (¢¢¢¢) for the tours. The CDs have been printed and look great! I took pictures of the gallery space before people started showing up (Shawn the owner is a genius at set up), and it was all top notch!
I'll post pics tomorrow (today actually, it is now 12 am PST).

Thanks Becca!
I compared your sky photo with one of my desert landscapes, and I think it is pretty close, although mine is about 3500 feet. At higher altitudes it gets darker, but I use the same mix, just with less white.

Okay, I can;t quite let go of this. Here is a link to John Hilton's paintings of the desert southwest:
http://bodegabayheritagegallery.com/Hilton_John_W_.htm
I have a copy of his biography called "The Man Who Captured Sunshine" I will see if there is anything about his palette. He painted primarily on hardboard with knives. the woman who taught me oils knew him personally and said he got a lot of the 'glow' in his skies by using Dorman's wax.
This particular painting used to belong to Leo Fender. I am humbled to know this.

Hi Nancy, we do have dollar signs too, just above the 4. No special signs for amlauts etc on our keyboards in the UK, but I guess the rest of Europe could be quite different, hopefully Björn will tell us about his, I use shortcuts and ö = 00f6 + Alt + x. Believe me, I learnt on a keyboard before the mouse was invented, so key codes are quicker for me than insert symbol. (um, actually I learnt on a typewriter, lol). I compose a lot of my replies in MS Word, especially the multiple ones as it is quicker. The reply box here, doesn't take the shortcut codes, unfortunately.
Edited to add: I should have read further before replying - Björn - what a great list of codes - much easier than my old-fashioned one, I shall have to learn those!
Tina and Rolina, do Europeans have special keyboards so that you can type umlauts over o's, and other diacritical marks? The other question is, while of course you would have signs for your own monetary units, do you also have dollar signs? The only way I can spell Bjorn with the appropriate mark is to compose my message on another program, Microsoft Publisher.

I am getting crochet urges too at the moment now it is beginning to feel like autumn. Any stitching with dark thread is hard unless you have exceedingly good lighting. Go for the white and save your eyes, lol!
I knew Rolina (and Sid) would be interested to hear about it, anyway. :D

Interesting discussion about the blue. I, personally, would only take the Cobalt or Cerulean for the sky as our skies over here lean towards a cooler blue and Ultramarine is way too warm. Red can be added to Cobalt if you need a warmer blue elsewhere. Having said that, though, Ultramarine makes great darks in mixes...

Now I just copy/paste. :D
Nancy- Yes, I think you are correct that the sky is somewhat paler here, but I still don't think it is as dark as you had it. (I have been out west) SK does paint out west, he travels all over the place. Earlier this year he spent something like a week or 2 camping in the desert just to paint.

As there was some discussion of ants recently
speaking of bugs, this morning I woke up from a dream in which there was a GIANT UGLY CRICKET in my apartment. I was chasing it around WITH A HALF FINISHED 18 x 24 CANVAS trying to make it go away. Every time I got it out, the (^#(% thing would come right back in.
Sometimes it had fur and sometimes a hard shiny cover. ( I am not a bug anatomy expert and do not want to be). It was scary. :(

Becca, beautiful paintings, very nicely hung exhibit. I nearly forgot that I have pictures to post too, from last night's opening.
Today didn't go as planned. The rattlesnake showed up, and I managed to get someone on the phone to come help capture him, but it took 20 minutes for them to show up, and by then, it had gone down a hole. It is so frustrating living alone! I don't dare try to capture it myself, because if it bit me, I'd die before help arrived (providing I could summon help). So I just have to keep watching my step. I almost stepped on it again this morning.
By the time that non-event was over, I had yet to put together a price list to hang new work at the gallery mid afternoon. It's done, hung, I'm back, and it's already 5 pm. I think I will repair and touch up more frames this evening and call it a day.

Sandra, I am so thrilled for you! Full time classes! I know you're worried about your aunt, but I hope they are able to diagnose and at least treat the pain!:grouphug:
Becca, your show looks beautiful, but I have to admit I'm always disappointed when there's only one first prize to be given. The shows here usually have first, second and third, as well as honorable mentions, in each category, whether it's pottery, oil, watercolor, etc.! I think it keeps artists encouraged to try more if there's more honor to be garnered!
Well, I've been painting most of the day, and Himself came home and took me to dinner. Said he had trouble with the tent and the wind - the poles kept pushing through the openings and finally collapsed on him! He brought me a present but I have to wait until he can get the car unloaded before he can find it.
Oops, he's just decided to go find it for me!
Here's the 8x8 I started today; I will really need to put time in tomorrow or they'll never be dry by Wednesday! By the way, these will go on a $200 or under panel; I was wrong about the $5 ones - those are the 4x4s the gallery bought for us to sell to raise funds for the gallery itself!
I decided to just keep the skies going with both...I do love blue! This one is the start for a harvest moon for October.

Carey, this is a good month to do it.:D This one is from a ref I shot a couple of years ago, but the full harvest or hunter's moon this year will be on Tuesday the 11th. The last time I did one from life, I set up a very soft light just on my canvas so that it didn't interfere with my view of the moon on the horizon, but you need to capture it fast, because it rises before you know it!

Thanks for your comments about the competition. I don't really like competing with so many media, especially D and photography, but there were 4 prizes given. First to the ceramic, second to the mixed media and third and fourth to photography. The theme was supposed to be Monarch migration. I supposed that is just how competitions go, my paintings just didn't catch the judges eye. The state fair is the same, different media all compete, except ceramics and photography are separate classes.

Himself has been out searching his car for my present, and with the tent, chairs, two telescopes and all his electronic equipment still packed in there, he finally gave up and just told me what it is. Marcia, I didn't get it that you were trying to capture it. I keep forgetting that everything is considered an endangered species in California!:)
Well, it isn't endangered, but people around here will kill snakes regardless of whether they are poisonous or not, then guess what?, the rodent population explodes!
Unfortunately, this is the most dangerous kind of rattlesnake, and if it has to be dispatched, then so be it, but I would rather see it relocated.
About 10 years ago people from LA were poaching every snake they could find out here to sell in the city as pets (((shudder))), and the population declined very rapidly. People just don't see that there really is a circle of life, and it needs to stay in balance. Right now, I have a shed so undermined by rock squirrels it is about to sink, and my patio is definitely developing a slant - I need all the snakes I can get!
Awwww, Himself is starstruck, and you are his favorite!!!!!!!

tina how tiresome to not have the energy you want :/ but hope the workshop will go great. i hope i will get into the guided tour the 4 oct. they have other guided tour that cost 120€ but dont know what so special about that. maybe you have a cold or something or some infection? or have you worked very hard?
i want to take a workshop aswell especially in techniques or portrait but will wait and see if the workshop next spring will happen cause then alot of money will goto there
Hi there Bjorn - 120€ for a guided tour - wow thats pricey I cant imagine how special that would be. I think Odd enjoys making money as much as art. Anyway, enjoy the show and if you are allowed perhaps you would take a few pictures.
I am hoping I am coming down with a cold because if its not that then I am getting really decrepid in my old age - and I am not really that old yet.
My workshop yesterday is a regular untutored all day affair - very professionally run and very good for life drawing and painting practice. I would like to take a few tutored workshops one day with top notch artists. I hope you manage a few too.

Oooh, I wonder who that is from?
I wonder too  - I am perturbed you havent had one yet. Mine was posted earlier than yours I think. Something else for me to stress about, I am now wondering if I fastened them all up sufficiently. :crossfingers:

Tina, i have been testing out various brands for quite a while, i almost decided on Utrecht as my favorite brand but they are just a bit on the thick side and i don't like that. So after all things considered like price, quality, choice of pigments, consistency, etc. I keep on coming right back to Winsor Newton artist line (not wintons). I have not tried any Cobras but I have used lots of Winsor Artisan water mix paints. I have also used Lukas quite a bit and I love them too. But lately when I want to go oil-less and with water only, I am opting more for acrylics than for water mixable oils.
Thanks Sid, I think the fact that you have tried so many brands and dont have any major objection to WMOils generally and like W&N specifically says it all as far as I am concerned. My very unscientific approach is that its as much to do with the pigment as anything else, I have found myself prefering one over another and when I investigated further discovered its the more expensive pigment I preferred rather than the hue - a Cad Red in one case. Anyway, thank for your feedback I think most people are in one camp or another and you seem to straddle both.
Oh yes, I quite like acrylics too, had a phase of using them for backgrounds. I love all media and veer from one to another regularly, just cant help myself. Its oils I want to conquer though.

Is this your fella Nancy? What a dish - wow, no wonder he is your favourite model.:)
BTW - bright blue skies might be your USP, part of your style. I often wonder how tutors know when to 'correct' a pupil and when to let things go are part of their individuality. Anyway, you are a superb painter of skies. I have some moon pics, I'll post later but I dont think they are paintable.

Hi everyone,

Marcia, that snake business sounds very dodgy, I know people who would be paralized with fear. Take care out there are wear thick boots.
Sandra, sorry about your Auntie, hopefully she will be sorted soon. Good luck with class, I'm with you in spirit :)
Hi Pumpkin Carey, meant to ask, are you are doing all these from life? Keep going, its a great challenge and enjoyable to watch.
Hi Jessica Vasari  - sounds like a good name, is there a Mr Vasari out there do you know? Is he eligible?
Took a sneaky work break - back to the grindstone now. Have a good day everyone.
Oh, Becca, how marvellous to see your paintings exhibited. I dont think awards mean much, I mean they are nice to get but your paintings are wonderful and appreciated regardless. I think of paintings as shoes in a shop, they might all bit wonderful and if you have to choose one pair it doesnt mean all the rest are any the less gorgeous. Ok, I have a shoe thing............

Tina, sorry to stress you, the postie tried to deliver Thurs, but of course I was out. He took it back to the depot and I wasn't free to go collect it until today.
I am so excited, it really is going to be hard not to open it!
I am decrepit too :(
Sorry about your auntie, Sandra, hope the doc puts her right, it is good that you are there, probably. It will keep her mind off it and you can help a bit, maybe.
Becca, fingers crossed you get some painting done.
Nancy, lovely painting!
Carey, I have just thought, at Halloween you can dress your kids up as pumpkins and paint them too!
Marcia - how fascinating yet scary to have a rattlesnake on your property - be careful, please!

hi ragamuffins, been pretty busy, like others said becca, i will also say that your paintings are very nicely hung. It really looks like a museum they are in, congrats.
tina, wmo's are great, no problem and really nice to work with, just don't use water with some brands like winsor newton to thin them, i hear you can with holbein, the chemistry is different between them.

Carey, I have just thought, at Halloween you can dress your kids up as pumpkins and paint them too!
 Not a bad idea cuz I have been trying for WEEKS to get Gavin to tell me what he wants to be for Halloween and he just makes things up. No, I am certain you do not want to be a *sock* for Halloween, Gavin.... I don't dress babies up for Halloween because I think they look ridiculous, but this year I do think I'll give Scarlett some kitty ears and a fuzzy tail and paint her nose. :cat: (She loves eating cat food, so it seems appropriate.)
Hi Pumpkin Carey, meant to ask, are you are doing all these from life? Keep going, its a great challenge and enjoyable to watch.
Hi Tina. :D That is the plan, though now you mention it I need to think about taking photos because I am not sure pumpkins will be around long enough for my project.
So it's Monday and I don't have my to do list made up for this week.
It is getting COLD at night! The fog on the lake has returned and it is beautiful in the mornings.

 Hi Sid, I love mongooses, it would be fun to have them running around.
The snake is poisonous, but it is only one I want to get rid of, the gopher snakes etc, I need around. I have rock squirrels undermining all my out buildings and patio - probably because the snake population was decimated several years ago and slow to come back - those I really do need to eradicate, but they are cagey (cages don't work).

I found these two prints of the first star party I went to with Himself, and scanned them in. This was in 2000, at the Texas Star Party. Dirt all over the prints - I'm so glad I have a digital camera now!

Nancy you are so lucky to have someone who has varied interests from yours but that you can share them and have so much fun together!
My husband loved the idea that I was a painter, but hated the smell, the space it takes up, the time it consumes..., I am really sorry now I gave it up for the sake of trying to have a stable marriage.
