View Full Version : Canvas on Board

Hello everyone,

I need some advice please.
I have painted, on a stretched canvas, a painting of a necklace hanging on a wall. Originally I painted it on a very dark background but have decided that the shape of the painting should be different; a narrow rectangle rather than a 3:2 type shape.
Now, this isn't an important work, just a nice exercise, but I do want to get it to look right.
So..... I wondered if I could carefully cut out the canvas to the size I want , plus some extra for the edges and then glue it onto board? What sort of board, what sort of adhesive?

Consider hardboard and acrylic gloss medium. Some might suggest YES glue but what I read questions its archival nature.

You could also stretch it around a board rather than glue. I've done that with some small works, stretched them around 12mm mdf.

either above will work but you must be careful to get the weave of the canvas running evenly. you could also consider making up a new frame with stretcher bars on which the canvas could be stapled.
