hi and welcome, there are alot of gel mediums that have different effects!
Check out the liquitex.com webiste for texture mediums.
http://www.liquitex.com/EffectsMediums/

Howard, (Idylbrush) Has a few videos on them too.

you might be able to get a thick texture with alot of paint using a palette knife and work it around the canvas.

Heavy gesso, gel paste mediums, gel mediums. Many of the paint companies have a series of different mediums to choose from that will give a range of effects. Check out golden, liquitex, tri-art to start.

If you want to buy a commercial product the kind of thing you're looking for are the paste mediums, e.g:

Hi,

I just use heavy bodied acrylic and apply with an palette knife. I know that some people like mediums, but I like the direct approach - just squeeze the paint from tube onto knife and apply direct to canvas... LOADS of texture and very fun! I'm a big fan of Daler-Rowney's Cryla, but Golden, Liquitex or W&N are fine, as long as heavy body.
