Happy September everyone, we are heading into the best season here, I think, although it does signal the end of what was laughingly called "summer" here in Scotland.

!becca
09-01-2011, 05:10 AM
Hi Rolina, that signal of the end of summer is the best thing about it.:D

I meant to make myself stop and get rest a few hours ago...but I have been up looking and tweaking..I think I am finally satisfied. I can now get a few hours sleep.

Morning folks  .

Just wanted say thanks for the nice comments about my pastels on last months Oily Rag. I was quite inspired by the benefits of doing quick paintings whilst away and am going to try and continue it but in oils. I started last night and if I dont fall by the wayside too quickly will go public soon.

Sandra I think your portrait composition looks lovely and I think its a great idea to include hands. It might help to do a separate hand study sketch before you start painting - I dont necessarily practice what I preach  but it will probably help the painting and my help your (completely unwarranted) jitters!

Rolina your boss situation is so unfair, but it may be that her snooping will help you more than direct confrontation has - I have my :crossfingers: for you. She is an arrogant and stupid woman. Just had a thought, I hope her snooping doesnt extend to WC:eek: .

Becca, I wish you some cooler weather very soon but what you said about your watering astounds me even more - so I also wish you much rain, five days and nights of so you can be forced indoors to paint. I hope the funeral goes well, or as well as these things can.

Nancy, you are a woman of action getting those brushes sorted so quickly. I hope they work for you but maybe you could try your other hand too, artists paint with their brains after all. Hopefully the situation will ease soon though.

So I am off to Amsterdam with work next weekend, very much hoping to squeeze in a trip to the Rijkmuseum and check out a few Vermeers and Rembrandts. Here's hoping.

The sun shines here in Hampshire today - I hope all your days are off to a good start too.

finnished a painting that has been sat on my easel for around 2 1/2 months now

it is in acrylics and titled " what's up with him today ?? "

the story is there is an iconic 60's jet fighter that has been stood on the side of one of the countrys busiest roads (A1) for many years , during these years it has been vandalised and has had souvenir hunters and scrap metal thieves gradualy strip it to the bones

the painting is a visualization of the scrap men moving in and the old belief that only animals can see ghosts

Becca, I really don't think you get enoug sleep and I hope you are resting soundly now!

Tina, a trip to Amsterdam with a possible visit to museums sounds like a great idea, fingers crossed for you!

No worries about my boss snooping on WC (although it would do her good to see what others think), I always do private browsing and ensure all history is deleted - often I use my own laptop at lunchtime too.

Paul, Shadwell, that is a very imaginative painting that really does express what you intended! (BTW, when I have a few mins to spare, I will PM you a link to some of my plane photos). Only a week and a bit to Leuchars air show - yay!

So I am already starting to think of my painting goals for next year. portraits. I think my goals are to work on more portraits, and not the ones that take 30+ hours. Alla prima.

Yellowing Update:

I think the oil primer yellows, it is most noticeable under my daylight lamp. HOWEVER- I think *all* the whites in my test are yellowing.

It's certainly possible I am crazy, maybe I will bleach the samples in the sun and see if that makes a difference.

!becca
09-01-2011, 10:31 AM
:( How sad about that primer....I order WN, when it gets here we will see if it has better results.

Okay, here are a few pictures. I make no claim that you can actually tell anything in them. :p I keep looking at them thinking maybe I *ought* to be seeing yellowing in them, but I really don't. Maybe my eyes are the wonky ones.

I found one where I had missed a couple of spots priming. So you can see the acrylic ground. I'll show three versions of the same photo so you might be able to see. (Try looking at your monitor from an angle, I can see the spots better that way in my photos.)

Same photo, just marked where the spots are:

You probably can't tell if they're yellowed or not, so it's probably not at all helpful. But we all like seeing canvii, anyway, right? :D

Hi, Chatty Kathys and Kens!:heart::grouphug::heart:

Paul, I love your latest painting; that is so dramatic and meaningful!

Jessica, <<<<<<OILY TRANSPORTATION VIBES>>>>>> winging their way to you!

Sid, I can't believe I overtook you in posts last month. Are you sure you counted right? I didn't think I talked that much! (Of course, talkers never do, do they?)

Becca, do you really get lower temps in September? Here we need to wait until October to get a real break! Except when our state fair is on in late September - that usually bring some steady rain downpours, along with dripping wet crowds!

Carey, I wouldn't get out the winter clothes just yet, for all those of us below the Mason-Dixon line.

Jess, we all need to come up to paint with you when your trees turn; be sure to stock up on the Vasari!

Hope springs eternal in the human heart.

If anyone's interested, I was going to get on here early  today and mention that I just started a portraiture challenge in Portraiture that has Nicolai Fechin paintings in it. I'm enthralled by his painting, so I include him in this small group of Russian artists, even though he lived most of his years in the U.S.

Ten pages and nobody's posted a pic of a cat yet? I'm appalled and I will have to go find one right now!

!becca

Certos is pectin used in canning jams and jellies. I heard about the gin and raisins too, but that one seems to have mixed reviews; enough gin, and nobody's feeling any pain. :o

That is one sweet sugar plum dumplin, Sandra! I called my mother Momma until I was 13, and than started calling her Mother because she got hostile at that point, for medical and psychological reasons. I lost the intimacy because she didn't seem like my Momma anymore. Daddy was always Daddy until the end.

Mom and Dad seem to be the standard in the U.S. today. both my kids call me Mom and I didn't teach them that. They grew up without a Dad. Except for Grandpa, who was a pretty good stand-in!

I'm not sure there is and actual grape in grape jello, but the gelatin wouldn't hurt.:D

The juice has to be concord grape, and I think the ratio is 2 oz of pectin to 3 oz of juice twice a day until symptoms disappear, then a few times a week after that. Makes one wonder why a couple heaping spoonfuls of grape jam wouldn't work, but then maybe it gets cooked out. And it tastes too good. I don't think medicine is allowed to taste too good, Mary Poppins notwithstanding.

!becca

I have been catching up on rest, and intend to do more of that soon.

Marcia, I have never heard of the grape juice/pectin thing...I have heard of taking cider vinegar however...it is a shame all the concoctions people will try to help with chronic discomfort. Some things like grape juice and vinegar are probably harmless enough, but too often the "cure" is expensive and potentially harmful.:(
And, by the way, after seeing your last guitar painting, I don't understand why you don't have a faithful market for them. They are amazing.

Nancy, do you see a rhuematologist? they are usually conservative in their treatment, but more and more conventional medicine is using supplements and maybe there is something out there that will help.
Sad about your mother...mine went through a terrible time when i was in my teens too...but we managed to weather it in tact. She was never a gooshy woman, but she was an amazing, strong person that I respected very much.

Sid, sorry your mom is still under the weather. I hope she improves soon.:grouphug:

Sandra, you are so poetic and I suppose you are lost in a drawing right now. I am looking forward to your portrait when it comes to the top of your list.

I have errands again in the morning if I can convince myself to go...blood work among them. And, it has the potential of being the last of our 100 degree days this year.:D

My goodness, I slept 10 1/2 hours last night and am not yet thawed out. I guess I am skipping the errands as I am late now for some things. When I can move again I will go see what needs to be watered.

not too bad doll !! had a major pc breakdown so i'm only just making my way through editing the photos from this years airshow!!

so far i have narrowed it down to around 85 shots from just over 800 taken , most get binned either because of angles i don't like , slightly off exposures ( especialy as i shoot fully manual ) and slightly off focus ( again fully manual )

i'm considdering another lens up grade to take me closer to the action but that is £1200.00 so it will have to wait till i have finnished rebuilding my motorcycle !!

although to be fair you can tell the girls wing walking are wearing adidas three stripe shoes and zoomed in you can see detail on her safety securing caribener ( although it starts getting blocky by then !)

Yes. I definitely have painting plans! Will prob leave a little early today due to the holiday weekend...I got invited out to some rooftop place for drinks but I am skipping it so I can get home and do my Cap Cod demo while it is still light outside! (How's THAT for dedication??)

Then I have to do unmentionable things to my unmentionables.....

I have a mystery painting on my easel, your portrait, and the Leighton study.....

*sigh*

Direct heat and turpentine and electronics mixed up is not a great idea...

Becc put it in the sun for a bit. Make that hot weather work for you.
