Well, I do have a plan, at least right now, of what I think i will be doing artwise. But, I think the sleep vibes I sent to Jessica may have bounced back and hit me. I have been so tired lately...sleep may help.

Hi guys, how ya doing? I'll have to read back quite a few pages to get the answer to that I guess. I am just coming up from air after a couple of extremely busy weeks work wise. I got back from a trade exhibition in Amsterdam on Sunday but sadly didnt have the time to squeeze any culture in at all - I had wanted to visit the Rijkmuseum again but it just didnt happen. So near yet so far.
Madly trying to catch up with everything but prompted by Becca I just wanted to say I am still in for the swaps, although I dont know where you are all at with them. I am not entirely finished yet, is everyone else? Whats the ship out date now?
Hopefully I'll get some proper time for art things at the weekend - roll on Saturday.
Catch ya later.

Hi Tina! Sounds like you have been very busy. We have decided on the 27th as a ship date. I hope this works for you. So sorry you weren't able to make the Rijkmuseum stop, I am sure it would have been inspiring.

Here are the cheapest bestest wines for any one interested who is a cheap winos like me:
Chardonay- Beringer
White Zinfandel- Beringer
Cabernet Sauvingnon- Napa Ridge
Merlot- Walnut Crest (Rapel Valley)
They are just real easy on the wallet yet purty good for dinners, with cheese at your opening night shows, or just good ole chuggin' :D

Sid, For over 25 years I use to own a winery. It was an interesting lifestyle.

Sid, thanks for the list...I like all that you have listed and here are a few more I like as well:
Franzia (big box) Merlot is fine for drinking the Cabernet great for cooking.
I love Big Box(that is the label) Pinot for cooking but not drinking.
Usually like any of the Ozzie wine in a bottle.:D Which for some reason I am mentally blocking all the vairietes:confused:...but I do love the blends.
edit..Black Opal is among my favorites.:)

Paul, interesting...I had a small grove of wine grapes here for years and they grew beautifully. At one time we entertained the idea of planting for commercial growing, but decided not due to the intense labor required.

This Saturday there is going to be a reinactment of the old large cattle drives passing near here. It will be the 150th anniversary and they will be driving 400 head of longhorn cattle along the trail. They also will be navigating through some of our small towns along the way. If I can manage I am going to try to find out the course they are taking and get a few pics.:)

I had 16 acres planted on a very steep hill side, and I bought a lot of grapes also. Super labor intensive. I was making 50,000 gallons a year or 250,000 bottles.

Sid, lucky you!
There are wineries here in KS, but as yet, I have not bought a drinkable bottle. A friend of ours makes his own wine and had a winery make sevearal bottles of sandhill plum wine. I was nearly the only person who tasted it that liked it so we ended up with several bottles..it was like a port or brandy depending on the pressing.
It looks like Irene really cleaned up New Jersey! Where did it all go?

My favorite wine was American Riesling, made by a local winery called Tres Sueños, but they stopped making it a couple of years ago. We don't drink much, so our last bottle went to vinegar before it was all consumed.
Since I usually need to be fully functional, my main drink is Ginger Ale, by Schweppes!

As usual, I am playing catch up here. Sid, those wines sound good. I finally tried 2 buck chuck from trader Joe's and it was really good (although a few people say they have gotten some underwhelming bottles of it from time to time). If I lived close enough, I'd buy it exclusively at that price. I bought a bottle of "Herding Cats" from S Africa, but it wasn't very good. Neat label though.
Becca, the cattle drive sounds like lots of fun! Where I grew up, cattle were moved from feedlot to field to pasture on our county farm roads (I am sure you can relate), and it can be, ummmmm, a little messy. 400 head?!?!!? I foresee some well fertilized, but crumpled rosebeds and hedges! Still, how exciting!

Marcia, back when I had a very balky car that couldn't get up to the speed limit, I used to go to work the back way. One morning, I noticed two curious cows staring at each other across the road, necks stretched over the fences!
They were red Brahmas, and I used to see them from our 9-story building, in the fields just to the east of us. Whenever I was upset by my boss, I would gaze out at these peaceable creatures and regain some of my serenity...:)

 Now you have something *else* in my head!
Speaking of wine...I don't drink it, but I do love to cook with it, yum, and lately I have been very into Yellowtail, which is an Aussie wine. :D It's got so many flavors to it that it's so delicious in cooking.
Carey, I did think of you when I was painting my fair plein air the other day...you would really excell because you could just paint the horses...
That's right, that would be fun. :D One of these days I need to go out and paint some neighbor's horses or something. Where the sand meets the real road, they have a young horse (whom we have dubbed Pookie) and he has recently acquired a friend, an older paint horse who has beautiful markings. And there are quite a few fields down the road with horses, too. And they have recently been gathering hay, so I need to go out and paint hay bales while I can...hmmm.
Carey... I'm wired at midnight and it's completely your fault! I have had 2 cups of winter blend, and I'm groovin to the B52s...still...
 Oh I hope you got some sleep! I've been sleep deprived of late...so hard to do anything that way.

Hi everyone,
I can't read all the posts, but I tried! Lovely, lovely paintings/drawings of our Sandra - gorgeous as ever, totally LOVe the nude!
I have been painting a little, but of course busy at work too. Have a new painting started, totally finished my swap paintings, although I might rework one (or two)...
Hurricane Katia was bad but as bad as feared, thankfully.
I am so glad it is Spirit Day on Saturday, I think I will be able to manage that, although I am writing a paper as well (deadline looming), but, heh, painting is much more important!
My friend is away now and although I am enjoying my peace I also miss her. The weekend after next I have 3 friends coming to stay with me from all corners of the UK and we shall be having a fun, arty, girly weekend, I can hardly wait.
Erm, I think that is all my news, I hope everyone is OK!

Wonderful! It must be a thing with you peeps who were born on June 11! My mother designed her dream house, too!
I did a free-lance job showing the elevation, basement, first and second floors for a builder - then he came back and asked me to plot the electrical and plumbing systems. It he may have asked me to plot the computer system, if it hadn't been 30 years ago!
Anyway, he stiffed me on the bill and I took it to small claims court. He declared bankruptcy, not just because of my small bill, but for all the materials, workmen and contractors. I would have settled for the house, by that time I loved it!
I learned the hard way that what is honorable behavior may apply in Oklahoma does not apply to Washington, D.C!
Of course now, people everywhere seem to be fairly shameless...

Thank you Nancy, I really am proud of it, I put a ton of work and heart into it. Funny, we went to court for a fault with one of the builders too... it was even more work than the building and though we won an award from the jury, it wasn't enough to cover all the loss. That experience has kept us from ever desiring to go to court again.

I just polished off another big tub of Brush Cleaner. When it gets down to the point where there's a hole in the middle and I'm digging into the corners, I squish up what's left and mash it into the new tub!
I will wait on the cookies, Becca, 'cause I'm tired and need to go to bed, but I do like to cook, it's just that summer is such a busy time (and it's been so hot this one!) that I haven't wanted to use the oven. When the first coolth gets here, you'll likely find me in the kitchen making bread of one kind or another.
Sandra, it's mainly baking I like to do, so I don't do much cooking in the summer; instead I devise my meals so I can use the microwave. Talk about being spoiled!
You're having Spring now, while we're getting cooler!
Girls, I could eat every meal out, but that can cause me untold digestive troubles. We're a little cash shy at the mo, and I think I'll ask Himself whether we can either go out to eat together, or have meals at home together. With grocery prices the way they are, there's little difference between home cookin' and going out.

Stapeliads are fabulous and gorgeous, also incredibly weird. I don't have any atm but I used to have a pretty good collection. They were growing in an office at Pratt, I took a cutting and it grew a nice big flower the size of a dinner plate. This spring I may get another plant and bring it into the office, I have good light here. Plants do not grow well in my apartment, there just isn't enough light, that's why I don't have them anymore.
And oh yes they do stink, it'll knock you over flat it's so awful.

I just read about use for those old phones. From the article "How to Interview Musicians":
"For phone interviews, my old-school setup never fails. The toughest part is finding an old-fashioned Touch-Tone phone with a land line, like the one depicted here. The dialing touch pad has to be on the base of the phone – models with the touch pad in the handset produce an unusable signal."

I hope this is a good place for advice. If not, please direct me where to go. My question is this: I enjoy painting in many styles, I have completed my first portrait, and prior to that I have done landscapes, still life, and also enjoy doing bright abstracts. Is this a bad idea to have so many different styles? I have had people complimenting me in all of these painting styles but since I am trying to break into selling my art, I have heard you should choose one style and stick with it. what do you think?
Thanks..Jules

Hi there jules, I think you should choose a style that is your strongest suit and stick to it .... selling art is another hole ballgame , and being good at it is what counts , I wouldnt want to sell my work if I didnt feel it was good enough to be hanging on the wall , art takes a long time to learn and to get established at ...:) you mite get more feed back asking this in the main forum:thumbsup:

:wave:Hi, Sandra! I'm learning some things about my Vasari and Gamblin paints in the lightest colors. Vasari seems to have a very strong white mix in their Rosebud, Brilliant Yellow, and Video Blue, which I love, but Gamblin's Radiants have a more translucent white, and are incredible assets in painting, especially in flesh tones! Gamblin's blending, in ebouche, is so subtle it is almost as good as in a layered painting!
I have Radiant Magenta, Radiant Red, Radiant Green and Radiant Violet, all of which are great for skin!:D
Speaking of violet, I have Gamblin dioxazine purple, and Charvin French blue violet. I group the Sennelier caput mortuum in with them as well, although it mixes some great flesh tones, too.
I noticed that some of you have cobalt violet, and I wanted to ask you why and if I should add it to my collection?:o

Hi, Jules! When it comes to selling, it's best to pick your strongest style and stick with it. When I joined my gallery, they thought portraits were my strongest. You might ask friends and family to identify your best style. Even though you like the others as well, you want potential buyers to tuck you into a corner of their minds that will make them come back to you.
Later, when you're rich:lol:, ease back into the other styles you like! Good luck!

Hi everyone!
Jules, you'll get a lot of opinions on your question. :) But I think you are talking *subject*, not *style* necessarily. "Style" is something that finds you, more or less...style is how you paint, and you can't escape yourself! If you are a relative new beginner, or even middling advanced, then I suggest paint everything! Sticking to one thing will make it easier to find your core audience, and galleries may want a particular thing, but don't paint yourself into a corner just because you think you "should". I hear a lot of advice about sticking to one thing, etc, and there is merit to it, but I honestly don't think it matters a smidgen until maybe you get really good and well-known....and in that case, it'll happen whether you want it to or not!
Just my two cents.

Nancy, the cobalt violet is beautiful...I have both Rembrandt and WN, the Rembrandt is lighter and leans more red..the WN is wonderfully rich. I don't know if you need it or not, but it is pretty.:D
Jules, most of the artists I have observed seem to paint many subjects, though they may have a reputation for one over the rest. To me the subject is very different from style.

I agree with Carey! Paint everything that interests you and find what you love to paint best. Then go for it.
I saw an article in Artist Daily and the editor said to find the trends of what people are buying or looking for. Hah. As if that were easy. And I know some purists would say "oh you can't do that!..."Painting to sell is not being a true artist." Well, I suppose I'm not a true artist because I DO try to see what people look for. Were I a millionaire, I'd paint my weird stuff but weird doesn't sell. At least not here. Perhaps in NY.

Thanks everybody, I really appreciate the opinions. I do say style as well as subject because I have sold and had as much interest in my abstracts (which are bright and just come from my imagination) as I have sold and had interest in my very realistic detailed work and I love doing both because when the detailed work gets me down I can let go on an abstract. BTW, I am so happy to have found this site...everyone here is so uplifting.

Stop tormenting me with your paint shopping lists! (I am on a strict budget until my credit card bill is under control)
Jules, you pose a good question and I find it vexes me a little too. It does make sense to develop and excell in one particular area if you can, but I also think it is useful to be able to paint many subjects. Some artists go through "periods", painting one subject for several years then moving on to something different. I think that is me!
Show us your paintings!

I am usually told that my realistic paintings (landscapes, still life) look like photographs and my abstracts look like they are 3-D so I guess in essence I tend to go for realism even in my abstracts. never realized it.

Jusles, those are all right from the tube...it is Rembrandt cobalt orange. My normal palette is usually very simple. Cad red med, cad lemon yellow, cad yellow medium, arizilian crimson perm, prussian blue, raw sienna, titanium white and ivory black. Occasionally I add another blue or different white.
The colors you see in the second row from the right are vasari rosebud, brilliant yellow, and video blue...they were a special gift from Jessica.

One of our model wranglers brought an old, beat-up guy to pose nude, and for a while I thought What the Hey, this guy is ugly and looks like a bum! But the one who asked him to pose drew him with a lot of respect, and I felt ashamed for having that thought. Rolina, there is a thread in Portraiture that I started for Sid, Nancy and I to post our Sandra portraits. Bethany has also posted there.
I ran errands the went out hoping to find the longhorn on the trail, but I wasn't successful.:( The area they are in has very few through roads and I am a little uncertain which they might be on. I was reluctant to drive into any with my car because they are very soft and sandy and there is not room for my car and a herd of cattle on them...I will try again later.

Hi all...I am, indeed, working on my torrit gray...I rather feel like I am just messing around not getting anywhere with it--though I know that's not true. It's just the stage. (I hope!) With all this white paint I'm using, I hope it can dry in the stages I need it to in order to get it done by the end of the month...
Becca, what wonderful shots!! That light is just amazing, too, what luck. I hope you find them again. :D
Okay, back to muddling around in my paint...

Sandra, you ARE special!
Your life drawing is great, those short poses are very hard to do, and you know it takes a couple of sketches to warm up.
I always think the aim of LDing isn't to produce a perfect drawing, but to stretch oneself and learn.
I love your drawings!

Well , Thanks for being honest , I guess I am doubting myself atm .... Thought I had a improvement in them in general but I just dont know:( ... and the thing is it makes my laugh and wonder in bewildering awe at the same time  , what do people expect when they give crap ccs but you go and look at their stuff , their beginnings and I mean they arent that wonderful , to even begin with . .... Ive only been drawing from ld for the last year , and no tutor yet ...
but i guess having a great teacher will enhance me more i will see soon enough ........

blondes don't make good cowgirls:lol:
Well, maybe not this one...when we went out longhorn hunting yesterday it was sort of spur of the moment and I was wearing knicker length sweats with lace edges and maryjane sneakers. I sort of stood out from the rest in their cowboy boots and hats, so they guessed that I was the artist that had contacted them.
We did find them again...followed them the last few miles to camp and I think I have some good shots. I will look soon. Also, talked to one cowboy and he wants a painting of him and his team...he has been drivng them on this trail for many years...now I need to practice horse painting.

Becca, oh I'm so glad you found them again. :D I'm feeling *slightly* better about my painting, but I still feel that it's got a ways to go yet.
Sandra, don't get so down on yourself. There is never a linear progression when it comes to something like art--even when you feel you are growing and getting better, you'll have times when you feel like you've regressed terribly. Don't believe that, it's just the way it goes. Your drawings are very good, it's *never* easy working like that.
You make me think about how lately, I'll look at my more chromatic work and think, holy cow, that is so bright, it looks awful! Then a short time later I'll look at my more subtle work and think, gosh that is so dull. It's often just a mood thing. ;)

Carey, you are so right about our "mood" and our art in how we feel about it. And right too that we don't always progress in a stable course upward...that is just how growth is.:)
Sandra, you should be so proud of yourself for working with your drawing efforts so regularly. And, your drawings are very graceful, nice work!

Sandra, I went home after LDing classes and cried - for a WHOLE YEAR, because I felt I just couldn't do it. Then one day, it all fell into place. I can't say it ever got easy, because it didn't but the agony stopped and my drawings became so much better!

well Rol  , thats about it in a nut shell , but thing is I dont think my ld is really all that bad , I actually like some of my work , yeah sure not all of it but elements of some work and some dont .. is that wrong should I feel they all suck ...I dont know what to feel to be honest  .. and really thats what it comes down to , honesty for me , and I guess like I said having a tutor will tell me whats the go and when and were Im stuffing up ... its abit hard to got to ld and teach yourself , I show up and I draw ... thats it ... I guess it is what it is ....
