One of my painting quirks is that I have always used a particular old painting knife instead of a palette knife for mixing paint.

Anybody else have an odd habit or tool they use?

Marcia, I have always used a particular knife, too, and was distraught last year when it *cracked* on me! Thankfully, I found a replacement on Ebay, but it's still just not *quite* the same...

Sorry, all, I didn't comment previously on thanking you for your nice comments on my sketches. (Thank you!) Yesterday I was out and about and went to five stores! () At least that did include the art store. I wanted so much to try SPRAY GESSO again because they had more in, but I asked if we could try it first because of that last batch. Well, it was the same as before! The caps shattered and we could NOT get the button to depress. :( What the heck?!

I did pick up some Permalba (no doubt paying way more than I should have for it, but I think it was a fresh shipment of it, at least) and some ink and some watercolor paper.

Nancy, I am trying to remember if I ever saw that movie or not...it sounds like I have, but I think it might be a Stephen King thing? Seems familiar to me on several levels...

Sid, that is an excellent moose! I love mooses, they are so neat.

Sandra, too bad about Nell needing glasses, but I do think glasses are awfully cute these days. :D ;)

That Yankee test...it makes me suspicious because guess what, there are other places other than the northeast and the southeast. I guess a lot of people aren't aware of that--which is really just fine by me.

Jessica, I don't think there's much need to feel about your 166 tubes. :D I'm sure they'll get some more cousins in due course.

I wanted today to be a painting day, but I think it's going to turn into a baking day instead. I want to do some more experimentation with my almond flour and also I really have a hankering for some zucchini cake (which is my favorite *ever*), but I am going to try to make zucchini cupcakes instead, that way I won't have to eat the whole thing in two days.

carey, i did a bullwinkle in a bog a long time ago, and i no longer have that painting and no pictures of it either so i am gonna do one like it again.
btw, just fyi, the plural for moose is, none other than ........ moose !
so you can love moose and that covers all of em :D
(mooses must be a slang redneck rebel hillbilly term from georgia or somewhere down yonder! it should have been on the test )

Becca, YAY for your little canvases! And I had a nice sleep with my love home to keep me safe from the evil spirits (can't rely totally on donuts!)

I think Jessica's advice is very good, and I will take it if you won't! I think I'll make a decision today on my plein air palette before I go out, and make a color chart or two.

Carey, that's not so strange about the breaking caps but it is about the chronic clogs on the SPRAY GESSO! Almost all the cans I have with plastic caps, the caps are flimsy and easily breakable. You know they are when you have hands as weak as mine are.

The Yankee test actually said I had a lot of pronunciations that are common in the Great Lakes area, too. Did anybody get the West at all?

I really have a hankering for some zucchini cake (which is my favorite *ever*), but I am going to try to make zucchini cupcakes instead, that way I won't have to eat the whole thing in two days.

Individual servings wouldn't stop me from munching away!

Marcia, I have a full array of painting knives but mostly use them for mixing paint!

Jessica, suggest a palette for me since I think I may make it out today to paint!

Now I need to go see the Oz girl's painting!

no but according to sylvester the cat, the plural for mice is "i hates meeces to pieces"
the plural for goose is geese
the plural for mongoose is mongooses

(there isn't one!:D it just goes by word origins)

CareyG
09-08-2011, 12:40 PM
 ...meese. :D

Sid, I just thought it was from Rocky and Bullwinkle. :D Nobody with little kids talks the same as people without little kids. (And I am especially bad. I think I am my own linguistic zone. :D)

Individual servings wouldn't stop me from munching away!
Me neither, :p but the freezer does let the munching last longer, at least. :D

Did anybody get the West at all?
I tried all the answers and it didn't hardly mention the west at all. Of course, there are few words that are just native to the west, but still to completely ignore its existence....ummm, the "western Great Lakes" is more of a geographic zone than seven to ten states?? Oohkayy.

Sandra, I've been looking at some cookbooks and came across something....you guys really eat fried eggs on your burgers?

Hi Everyone, I have a quiet evening to myself and intend on resting quietly in front of my quiet computer, quietly not having any noise at all, lol!

My friend will head off tomorrow to go and stay with family, she may be back in a week or two though.

I intend to spend my weekend finishing my swap paintings, they all just need final touches, really.

Off to look at Sandra's painting.

Oh, Becca, the painting of Daya on the scooter is fab!

Hugs all!

I think the moose is okay, but I won't post the picture because the poor thing looks os awkward and uncomfortable.

Ah, the Yankee test. As a Nebraskan from smack dab in the middle of the country, I am 26% Dixie, but I was surprised at how many I scored from the northeast. Although a couple of those...;
I pronounce caramel both ways depending on whether it's the goo in a chocolate bar; 'caramel', or the goo an apple is dipped in; 'carmel'. Didn't know I had to make up my mind. :)

If the stuff is on the lawn and/or driveway, it's a yard sale. If the garage is open and/or stuff is piled there, it is a garage sale.

I don't youse any of the following, except 'You(se) guys' comes closest
You(se) guys
You all
Youse
You'uns, yins
Y'all

A CA native was surprised the first time a waitress in NE asked us, "What can I get you guys?" He always thought of 'guy' as male whether it was singular or plural. Singular yes, but plural, not necessarily, where I come from, if it's a direct question. A group of guys is all male though.

Singular yes, but plural, not necessarily, where I come from, if it's a direct question. A group of guys is all male though.

Marcia, Strangely, some of the wait staff here refer to my husband and me as "guys," and I have to admit feeling offended. I think that they're managing to learn better recently, tho... at the restaurants we like to go to regularly, we ask to be seated in a particular waitress's area. The one I like is from New York, at Red Lobster, is well-mannered, and is very comfortable to be around. Another waiter we like is at Olive Garden, and is very interested in our reading material (The OG is noisy because of being family-friendly, so we take books, since we can't talk loudly enough to hear each other).

Rolina, I used to live near Virginia, in Maryland, and I grew used to the dialect we call "Tidewater Virginia." It's rather "Oot aboot the hoose" and has a definite Scottish flavor! Then in Boston you'll hear r's dropped from where they belong and added where they don't. Such as, "Wheah didja Paawk the Caw?" I like people from Long island, too, who give the g a hard emphasis: "I'm from Lawn'Guyland." I had a good friend from NYC who I couldn't understand, and she couldn't understand me, so it took us about a year of working together before we became friends!

Well, it's already gridded. :)

Speaking of waitresses addressing customers, I remember a waitress in Cicero using 'youse'. People in that part of greater Chicago definitely had some NYC inflections.

Nancy, a beet *is* a root!

At first I thought Sandra meant lettuce wraps, but now I think they might be what my husband's grandma calls cabbage rolls. (Which are soooooooooo good!) Sandra, is the roll actually baked around the stuff?

Carey,

Carey what the heck is fry sauce

Carey, what's fry sauce?

Exactly.

:D

Fry sauce is basically ketchup and mayo. (Though the best fry sauce I've ever had also had barbecue sauce in it.) Actually, I've never really been partial to it for fries, though it's good, but it is absolutely necessary for corn dogs.

Of course, Europeans often eat fries with just mayo. (Ewwwwww!) Gimme fry sauce any day over mayo.

Carey,:) I'll look up Johnny Carino's and give them a try. I wouldn't use fry sauce on fries, but if I'm making a Reuben, I mix ketchup and mayo as a substitute for Russian dressing. But then I'm weird about how I like my Reubens. I make them with Texas toast sauteed in butter.

Please don't mention my arteries; I don't indulge in them that often!:o

Here's my almost abstract plein air for today, I decided to use a knife (on a 6x8! Himself had to take my car, so it's another front yard one. Which is lucky because I ran out of white. Pliz ignore the wet paint shimmer. This won't dry for some time!:D

Did they find out if she has to have the drains in her lovely little ears?

Paul, you can ship all the water out here to Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. We've been battling drought all the time the Mississippi was flooding one state away from us, then Lee happens to the east coast, and then the next hurricane drifts east away from us! Very frustrating!

Texas has been suing us for the rights to buy our lake water in SE OK, and they lost today. I feel sorry for them, but although we're much smaller, we are suffering as much as they are.

I do think I look more German than usual in the one I posted.

Where are you, Jessica? I'll bet Daya:heart: is full of herself today and telling you all the fun things she got to do at her first day in first grade! Introverted at that age, I hated school, and used to hide under the bed, but I wasn't as outgoing and socially adept as your sweet girl is!;):D

 how could you possibly forget that? My knife and my oily rag...they are my painting BFFs. :D Can't manage without them. I need my weapon and my security blanket!

Becc, my unsolicited advice to you, which you can ignore and tell me to shove it, it's ok, is to use as few colors as possible for your plein air at the fair. Don't overwhelm yourself. Before you go, do a color chart to see how they interact with each other. The last thing you want to be doing is guesswork. I only say this because you mentioned you are feeling very nervous about it. Eliminate as many unknowns as possible, bring as few pigments to get as well-rounded a range as possible.

First, I would never tell you to shove your precious advice:heart: ...I have my normal palette of paint in my bag and a few additional pigments for brilliance. I did practice mixing and painting, only wish I would have had more practice through the summer, can't help that now.
Last year one painting won an award because "it looked like it had been painted by a child" :D There is still hope for me.

Thanks all for your well wishes and vibes...I will know you are all there with me.

I have good news to share. My painting I submitted to the professional arts competition won an award.:D It is a merit award, which I am completely satisfied with..much better than the critique where they simply say "i wish I had given you an award."

I only painted one plein air...and as soon as I started applying paint I had plenty of help...about 8 or 10 little kiddies hovering around me repeatedly asking ..."what are you painting now?" One little boy wanted to paint so badly he started grabbing brushes out of my bag. When I told him he couldn't paint right now I was afraid he was going to start crying...fortunately he didn't. Here is a pic of my plein air..it isn't earth moving great...but I am ok with it.

Patricia, I always have so much drag across my canvas that riggers don't work well for me. I have a lot of trouble establishing a flow that will enable me to paint one good swift line.

Hi Nancy,

I had the same problem, I tried all the riggers I had and then ordered
new ones to try.
The brush at the bottom is terrific - it's an Escoda Light Ox longliner
with bristles 52mm long ! - I think it's used for pin striping -after practicing
for a while, I merrily finished all the rigging on my Sorolla copy of 'Beached Boats'.

Thinned the paint with Liquin Fine Detail and dipped the brush first
in Sans Odor and wiped off before dragging the brush through the paint -
hope the rigging doesn't fall off the painting !

Yes that's certainly true.
It's also true in sculpting, especially stone sculpting. Everyone
has their own way of holding the chisel and whacking it with the
hammer with the result that , over time , they both get worn in
a particular way - so no sculptor lends their tools ! :D

I heard the same thing on the NOAA National Hurricane Centre website.
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

The track forcast shows it taking a turn to the east and the forcast discussion
says that it may drop below hurricane status due to colder water etc but because it is so large , could still have storm force winds when it
approaches Britain in 3 days.

funny, one woman near where I was painting bought a whole fried onion, the vendor must have been near because there were a lot of them being eaten. Anyway, I was nearly finished painting and she came over and offered me the leftover portion of her onion she wasn't able to eat. I guess she wanted to help a starving artist.

Oh my word, that is funny! Imagine a complete stranger offering you a leftover fried onion...yuk! Do we artists look that pitiful? Now if had been leftover candy...

I just watched a video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfDoQwIAaXg&feature=fvwrel) that at first I thought I would turn off, because it was about slow-motion bullets fired. My NRA nephew sent it to me. But I got caught up in the blossoming visual imagery and the hypnotic music track. I watched it all the way to the end, and it's not short. It was beautiful! I think it could be called a work of art, especially toward the middle where it showed bullets going through glass...

Awwww, PANDAS!

Nancy, lovely nails. Mine are still bare, I may do them later.

Sandra, hope your tummy feels better soon, Nancy's health vibes work - my throat is a lot better this morning, yay!

Sid, great drawing of Sandra, so glam.

Becca, good idea to video ourselves painting. Those time-lapse vids are my faves to watch, I wonder how one does those?

Heh, Nancy, come to think of it, I may have done the same with my wee paintings too - oh well, if they are subjects we enjoy then the results will show their enjoyment of the process and that is a Good Thing, eh?

So, last weekend I took my guest to a nearby town that has a couple of galleries and this painting grabbed my attention. I asked permission to photograph it, because I wanted Marcia to see it:

I particularly loved how I didn't notice the violin in his hand until I got closer to it (sorry for the bad photo):

Rolina, what a wonderful painting! Love how the image softly emerges from the background... I'm so glad your throat is better today!

Sometimes I think we struggle to make things too clear for the viewer instead of trusting the magical human imagination to fill in the blanks.

I have practically reworked all my unmentionables - argh, I really must leave them alone. Mind you, they are looking much better now and more resolved.

Yes Nancy, that is something I shall try and remember about leaving some work for the viewer's eyes to do or it will get bored.

How do you feel today, Becca - did you do some more plein air?

Becca, ohh congratulations on the ribbon!!! That is awesome, and so well deserved. I am so excited about it. And I think your plein air is fantastic, that perspective is terrific and I like the composition.

I am now Officially Officially Officially done with my Unmentionables. :p No, really, I am. Yesterday I spent the day finishing up the last of the extras I was doing, which I really had hoped to have finished before doing anything with the others so I could photograph them all together. Michael, I have now added your blog to my reader. I may be being a bit dumb (I do have a bad headache this evening), but I cannot see how to post a comment. I wanted to leave a comment on one painting in particular - "The Forgotten Way", it is superb. Your other fantasy landscapes are stunning as are your drawings.

I don't know how to increase traffic, I was very nervous setting mine up, but I have been delighted with how much interest has been taken in it and the lovely comments I receive.

My suggestions are:

follow and comment on other blogs
Link it in your signature on here
post often (ahem)
link in your Facebook account if you have one
Post on a variety of subjects

I bet there are other suggestions, but that is all I can think of at the moment.

Sandra, often boredom is caused by some hidden fear. You have a rich and loving life and share your gentle insights with all of us here. You do marvelous art and you're growing by leaps and bounds. You're amazing! I envy you all that you are and do!

I can think of two thing right now that could engender fear in you: fear of starting your commissioned portrait. You think you won't satisfy and you're wrong! Second is fear of the unknown, which entails a) going to the atelier; b) going far away from friends and family; and c) fear you won't please your new instructors.

The only one that has any validity is the loss of daily contact with your most beloved people, because both good and bad things happen to those you love. Whether you're home or not, you have no power over that. Accept that, hard as it is, and you'll feel a lot better and more confident.

I'm going to do it, Becca, but only if I can find the photo; I'm trying to remember when Sandra last posted it, because I didn't download it then! would you send me your reference? Pleeeez?

Sandicat,:grouphug: nobody can make you happy except you! I just finished the last tweaks on my unmentionable that is coming to you. Hmmm, well, I think...

By the way, don't worry about painting unmentionables; you've got a full plate and we'll still be here.

Just in case Tina shows up, I have extras, too!:D

I sent one Nance:heart: , no worries and yeah my swaps are lacking at the mo , but I have some and I will send regardless if I miss the send date so be it , but Im still there chica .... :grouphug:

rebecca, please be here and answer asap if you can, the metal paint box you have had since you were young, does it hold one painting in the lid or does it hold any more than that?
and does it look like gray hammered metal? i will tell you why i want to know later, thanks in advance.

Sid, sorry I have just made it here...there is a double spot in the lid to hold 2 panels for carrying. I think it is smooth, I am going to look in a moment.:) Ok, I looked, it does have a hammered metal texture..

Nancy, I will get the ref to you.
