When my children were young I put aside my oil paints because I thouht it would be to dangerous for them, not just the paints but the solvents and rags. I began using gouache more often. This is a portrait of my oldest son I did from that time. They are older now but I still use gouache, I like switching mediums because it makes painting fun.

varying mediums is always good...nuances of the medium's traits I think cause the eyes to see differently, and the course of attack stretch us...

very nice

Beautiful! I started painting in gouache this week .. lots of fun, but I realize I have a lot to learn. I have mainly painted in watercolor and oils. I also am debating giving up oils to work in gouache. Beautiful.

Your portraiture in gouache is an inspiration to me. I am currently working on a portrait of Amy Winehouse!

I also like the warms & cools. Too many rely upon adding black.

Steve, this is beautifully done. I too love the mystery and excitement of different media.

This is actually quite nice. I like the back-light coming across the boy's face. How do you like the gouache as compared to the oils?
