Post cropped reference photos or paintings with mountains to use for classroom study. You can also just paint a section of a mountain so you don't have to do a full painting.

Homework for this week--The first pic is the original taken by Johannes (bought with package) and the second is the cropped version I would like to paint. There are only a few things I would do i.e., lighten roof on cabin, lighten shadows on far mountain to push into the back. Change peaks of main mt. by smoothing a peak or two. Perhaps the slant of the mountain has the eye moving too fast. I did correct some items in paint. Thank you so much. This is just wonderful.:wink2:

This is the first time I have uploaded an image so bare with me please.

I missed Saturday's class and am waiting patiently for it to show up so I can catch up.

The image I have uploaded is from China. I would stretch the image a bit as I'm working with a Mac and new at this I couldn't get it to the right size. I would remove a lot of the snow from the far left mountain to add contrast and I would remove all people. I love the rounded shaped waterfalls in the front of the picture and do not want to crop them out even though I realize they are that bowl shape we need to avoid. The waterfall is what makes this mountain scene unique.

I'm going to try to paint this in watercolor. Keep your fingers crossed because I'm a beginner -less than a year. I am determined however!

Dear Johannes:
I missed your 3rd session on 08/20/11 but when I came back from vacation I went to Homework for week 3 right away to plan my study.
Have not seen the stream of it yet.

The first photo is the top part of my painting.
The second is my bottom part.

The two photos are not the same size but I will match them when I paint.
Hope they will work well together.

Sandi C.

Of course I will eliminate some of the pine trees below and shrink the rest so the mountain will look more majestic. Will create the transition from land into water. The tiny pine trees in the foreground will have to be gone too. I will curve the water lines into S curve. The top of the mountain peak will not kiss the edge of the painting. Reflection in the water will match trees and mountain on top.

I am wondering if this would work in a painting. It is of sunrise on Mt Egmont (Taranaki) New Zealand taken from the top of the Ruahine Ranges. We tramped up to a hut for an overnight stay and got up early for the sunrise. The glow of the sun on the distant (about 200 miles) mountains was amazing.

I have cropped the photo and played with it a little in Photoshop Elements.

I'm finding mountains are a little harder to do then I thought. It's the color that troubles me. I did a frinkenstine (sp) from these 2 photos.

I declared a beach day on Sunday last…..nicest/hottest day of the entire summer. =)
I always take a small watercolor kit with me and so…..my homework is a 5x8 watercolor on Moleskine book, plein air at the beach. Good thing I got this done….’cause I just haven’t had time to do anything else this week.

This was my view of the lake/beach…..it’s decidedly uninteresting:

And here is my watercolor…..

This is my quick painting. I know it needs a lot of work as it is too dark. The canvas sheets aren't the best to paint on either. I just thought I should add something to the class even though it is not a pro style. LOL :)

9x12 acrylics on Canvas paper. I will fix the V on the left hand side. Done with My first try by doing a painting with only one stroke and using unconventional colors only colors and shapes as I saw it with my artist brain.

I continued to work on this after our final class. It is pastel on Canson. I am not crazy about it but enjoyed the process.

It has a nice abstract look to it if we consider realism is not the goal.

The color temperature of those mountains are much better. Still if you wish to have more recession into the distance you can still apply more atmospheric perspective to the end of the mountain. See example.

Thanks for your previous comments regarding this painting. I tried to change the mountains so they weren't cloned....and think I cloned them again. I should have made the mountain or the foreground more dominate. Instead, they each seem to take up 50% of the space. At least the left side of the painting is not the same as the right side. But, I don't think the snow in the right corner works.

The problem is the symmetrical dome of the mountain which cannot be corrected by working inside the shape. The contour of that mountain is what needs to be improved and you will be happier with your painting. What you can do is not mirror the angles of the diagonal slopes.
