View Full Version : Alternative to heavy wood panels, large format (36x48 etc)?

Ive been painting on 36x48 cradled wood panels.

These are big and heavy, but suitable for painting with mixed media where sanding and using a painters knife to manipulate the surface are workable.

Is there a lighter alternative that I should explore to avoid the heavy wood that can keep up on the durability side of things?

These big panels are just big and heavy.

Any insight welcome, thanks!

I would suggest gatorboard but not sure how the corners would hold up to dropping or hitting on a corner.

The panels you are using now, are they solid wood or plywood? What is the thickness of the wood? There are some panels made with 1/8th or 3/16th inch birch or maple surfaces. Might be lighter than solid wood but again there is the issue of the corners.
