Description:

Montgomery Wall

Three houses of Dr. Lucius Montgomery, Sr. located on this corner at various times all burned down. The first was two stories with a two-story cupola, which burned in 1895. The second was built that same year and featured a wall on the north side built of bricks previously used as ballast in English ships. A remnant of that wall, with a Victorian Gothic entrance and wrought iron gate, is all that remains.

Along the east and west sides of the 20-acre tract were long clipped hedges, and an orange grove was in the back. That house burned down in 1911 because of a defective fireplace flue. Montgomery suffered an uninsured $10,000 loss. The third house of Montgomery, who had come to this area in 1868, was built in late 1911 and burned down during the 1930s.

OK, lots to say! First and foremost, I wasn't particularly enchanted by the subject, therefore I think many of my problems are stemming from that.

Anyway, onto the problems.
Foliage! I hate it at best, so that's of course what I struggled with. In fact, I haven't finished most of it 'cos I detest it so.
The artistic license I took gave me a few lighting probs, plus the composition I chose bored me to death.
Colours. I just couldn't get the right ones! We all have those days right.
I suppose I sort of like my bricks method. It started out as the Marvin/Pam motherwash idea but I just let it go my own way.

There is a lot cropped off this (too late to regain since I cut it off in frustration). I think it was even worse before that so :).

Comments, critique, whatever you like. Don't be gentle :D

A smart point of view, leaving out the unnesessary and focusing in the light though the gate.

P.S.: this photo was taken while the paper was still a bit wet, so I apologize for the slightly warped image!

Apart from the perspective (who cares about perspective!), this is lovely - soft and loose. Your brick method is great, not too detailed yet looks like bricks. Well done Ruth

Marvin, fantastic foilage paint as usual, still laerning from your tutorial.
I see two problems: building looks flat, it needs reiforcing lights and shadows to get volume.
The other is perspective, lines to the right are going higher than left ones and that canīt be, they must join at the same horizon line which must be at observerīs eye. I saw many of the other whith the same problem because ref photo isnīt very clear.
