Welcome to painting and to the forum:)
In the Information Kiosk here (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=329), you'll find a Classroom Index (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=432555) and check the blending classes by Maverick, particularly this one (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=376292) - it's painting an apple but it will give you excellent advice and you'll see how others tackle it.
As a very basic attempt to understand painting a sphere,
draw a circle
have light , medium and dark versions of a colour ready,
select which side the light is coming from,
paint light on that side, gradually adding the medium tone, then gradually adding the dark tone til you get round to the other side.
Keep adding some water to the brush to blend the tones in - and use brush strokes from top to bottom of the shape.
That's very basic, but master that and the sircle will look spherical - and you can progres to more refined painting :D

The only thing I would add is to be aware of the reflected light on the "shadow" side.

Don't assume you can get it all done in one go. Many layers will help to blend the colors and make it look 3D. Take your time and allow each layer to dry properly before then next
