Why Buy an H-Frame Easel

There are many studio easels to choose from. While many styles and designs will work, one stands out from the rest; the H-Frame Easel. With its unique characteristics, the H-Frame Easel provides artists the functionality they’re looking for in an easel.

H-Frame Characteristics
Let’s start with the obvious. H-Frame easels are named after their footprint structure. They literally have an “H” frame configuration. This design makes the base of the easel sturdy and resilient to wobbling, as it offers four points of contact to remain stable.
Casters allow for easy moving of the easel, but many offer locking casters to help secure the easel in place before painting.
The Framework of the easel is a parallel, boxy design, which provides bulk support on either side of the masting system. Many H-Frame easels come with a back angle adjustment as part of the frame, which allows the canvas to be slightly tilted backwards to reduce glare. Some models tilt a few degrees forward for pastel dust.
The Masting System on H-Frame easels often comes with additional rail supports, on either side of the mast for added support. Many models offer a double mast to keep heavy and/or large boards secure.
The Hardware can differ amongst brands and models. Many H-Frame Easels use a knob adjustment to raise and lower the canvas braces, while others use a ratchet system, where a peg slides into predetermined slots. Other models offer a winch system, in which a crank lever is used to raise and lower the braces, or more commonly, the painting tray.

FAQ:
What media work well with H-Frame Easels?
Stretched Canvas and panel work are the two most popular substrates to use on H-Frame Easels, as they are heavy and their bulk require more support than other materials. Acrylic and Oil painters alike use H-Frame Easels. While some Pastel artists may work with these easels by tilting the mast forward, convertible easels that can be tilted more assertively or laid flat are more preferable for both Pastel artists and Watercolorists alike.
