I'm attempting to reuse an old canvas by applying gesso over the old painting. Problem is that darker areas bleed through layers of both gesso and white acrylic. Is water based Kilz the solution? Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Sam

I have had luck with BIN shellac based white primer.....let dry, then gesso.
Shellac is less if not at all toxic. Kilz smells quite strong and is toxic.

Good luck, derek

Hi Derek,

Good to know. I'll try it.

Thanks!

you might need 2-4 layers of gesso to cover it, have you tried a more coats when current is dry?
