American Kestrel, or Sparrow Hawk as I grew up knowing them...this is in colored pencil, 7x9 stonehenge. There's no way I can compete with most folks on this thread, but if I don't try I'll never get that good! C&C welcome!
Reference photo is from the RIL, thank you aaces for a beautiful photograph!

Looking good, would like to see a bigger image as the WIP progresses.

KJSieloff, that's a great outlook that takes courage, but sure to result in progress.
You're off to a great start! The coloring looks good, but be careful with the beak. It looks a little on the small side. Can't wait to see rest!

Looking good! As for competing with everyone else here...I think as artists we really only compete with ourselves, and, as long as you are improving...you are winning! The more you do, the more you will improve! I look foreward to the finish on this one. :)

Got to see a kestrel just yesterday, and this is looking like a really good start. Good for you-I've yet to get that brave!

to be honest, the beak looks right to me, the reason I say this is the last time I did an AK I had so many pains over the beak because it felt small,,, they do have smallish beaks in appearance to that quite fluffy head... I would agree with posting a larger picture, and Kerry is bang on, we compete with ourselves, and help each other... I really like this, AK's have a special place in my heart, brave beautiful little falcons...

Looks good to me Kathy, will look in again.

Paul is correct, they are puffy little birds, and their beak size can be quite deceiving, but take a look at this photo. You'll see the beak protrude just a tad more from the cere (the yellowish area where the nostril is) before rounding down. Hope this helps!

Looking good to me so far.

Really like how this looks so far, love the colors you've used!:)

Thanks for all the comments guys, it helps! I'll not be able to post an update until maybe tomorrow night, life is getting in the way right now!! Went to town and hubby bought me a new art table, so I'm ripping my studio apart today, so this part of life getting in the way is actually a good thing!
Have a super day all!

This is off to a wonderful start, Kate! The eye is full of life and that really makes a work of art pop, IMHO. Looking forward to updates on this. :)

Looking wonderful! I am watching you work.

Thanks guys! Didn't get to post an update last night, and I'm at work today. So hopefully this evening...I did do a bit more, but not enough. After I work on it a bit I'll post another update later this evening. I'm liking the way it's coming along, I love these little birds!
Back this evening!

OK here it is....I've already decided it's too dark. Also, the pic one of you posted shows a lot more barring on the breast than my ref photo shows. I have tweaking to do obviously, but reaching a point I'm gonna have to stop for tonight:crying: . Thanks for looking!

Looks great! Really like the detailing in the face.:)

Still looking good Kate, will look in again.

This looks great, Kate! It might be possible also that your bird is of a different age and has less barring. I know nothing about them, but it's just a consideration. What a great first project for your new art table!!

Hi Lisa! You know I thought the same thing...I was thinking the posted pic here was maybe of a juvenile - who knows....anyway here's one more update...I have some more tweaking and touch up to do but the next post will be the finished one. There is a huge dark shadow under the bird's wing, I think I did an acceptable job. I really wasn't sure what colors to use because I'm pretty new to colored pencils. By the way....this is just a head and shoulders shot. I only have the other wing to finish.
Thanks for looking!

Awh thanks guys! Here we go with life getting in the way again, I didn't get to work on this last night. I'm not sure about tonight, and tomorrow my daughter and grandsons are coming in. They will be here all weekend, so the whole weekend is pretty well shot. Maybe Sunday evening/Monday???? IF I get anything done on it tonight, I will post an update whether finished or not!!
You all and your support is what keeps me going! Thanks for that!

Good start. Waiting for updates.

Thank you so much for stopping by. I just looked at your website - WOW! You do beautiful work!! I also love scratchboard, but have never tried it yet. I will eventually though!
I probably will not get to update this before Monday night...didn't get to work on it last night so it stands right now as it is.
Have a great weekend all!

Posting a finished pic...life REALLY got in the way! Arizona's biggest wildfire in history (Wallow) evacuated my dad, my daughter and my niece. I've been busy! Fire's far from being over, but it appears my family are all out of danger - no homes lost, etc.
I'm calling my Kestrel finished...not going to do any more to it than this.
Sorry for the delay, C&C's welcome!

The fire sounds horrendous. Keep well.
Very nice finish and well worth waiting for!

You are all so kind! I was disappointed, but I'm new to this medium so I'll take it. Learn and move on. I want much more realism, and I will get there!
