View Full Version : Boston Portrait- the lovely Beans
This is my girl Beans- I had posted this as a WIP, but now she's done and I wanted to share her with this forum. I would like to continue to do pet portraits, but I struggled with rendering her smooth fur on her body. Anyone can give me some pointers? Thanks for looking/commenting. -Khttp://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/01-May-2011/963893-DSC03823.JPG

I think you did a wonderful job on this, it's a very sweet portrait of a cute pooch.

I have to laugh at the expression!! Excellent work!

Lovely work - love the cute expression.
Thank you so much everyone for your kind and encouraging comments! That expression is her "who, me?" look that she seems to always have. As I mentioned, I would like to do more pet portraits so I have enlisted a few friends to give me some of their pet pics so I can try some more. It takes me a while to produce a painting as I am a SAHM with 2 little children. I mostly paint at night, so it could be a while until the next post! My husband owns a local pet care business, so in the future I might be able to display prints in his shop and drum up pet portrait business. Here's hoping! - Kathryn

Beans is a cutie (great name, appropriate for 2 reasons ;) ). I'm a huge BT fan, Jester, who lives with us now, is our 4th.
I like the expression on her face too, it's as though she's not really allowed on the furniture and she was caught. Fantastic job on the wicker. Keep painting, it's all about the practice.

Wonderful Kathryn! She is a sweetie! I agree with previous poster...Her expression says to me "But, I like laying here", as if she were caught.
LOVE the chair and cushion detail!

You've got to love that face Kathryn, great expression.
Best from mike,x.
Excellent painting Kathryn. Love that expression! Keep doing your pet portraits! One's best work comes from doing what you love. Like Frank said, practice is what makes it work.
Have a great day. Pat

Aww to cute!!!! I love it!
Thanks again for the encouragement everybody- my friend just gave me the pics of her pug for a portrait... so now I am inspired to go for it! Frank- lol about the appropriateness of "beans" - having Bostons you must know all about the, erm... "tooting" issues. -K

I love this, Kathryn! Wonderful.
Please, please, don't constrain your natural abilities in an attempt to render "smooth fur". The art world is full of painters (myself included) with the skill to interpret photographs.
Yours transcends technique. Don't change a thing!
