A new board from me? Whoa!

I know hiatus...but senior year college is a nightmare. But I do need to do this one. This past Nov. our neighbors house caught on fire, and unfortunately Dave didn't make it out in time. They were good family friends, and so we helped out his wife as much as we could. Jackie asked me if I'd do a piece of Dave for her which I readily accepted (although she insists she's going to pay me, but I'll figure that out). So this is the photo she picked of him. The photo is missing a lot of detail, but it gives be a general enough idea. Kinda going rough on the scratching to emphasize how old and worn his skin was. He also had a pretty rough exterior..if you know what I mean. But at heart he was a really nice guy. I hope she likes it.

It's 9x12 and we're about 6 hours in.

You are an angel!!!

This looks great so far

04-12-2011, 07:05 AM
I admire what your doing....it looks great!! Love the image and the love behind it.

Im guessing...you are NOT wanting money in exchange for your vision? You might try telling her something along the lines of ... This is your gift to Dave but she gets it and please don't rob you of the joy of giving.

Well wishes on this ...you lil Honey,You.

Sometimes truly outstanding work derives from one's heart and becomes a gift. This seems to have that potential.

This is a good thing you are doing.

First of all I just wanted to extend a wonderful thank you to everyone! I wish I had more time to thank everyone individually, but you all know how much I adore every one of you! :grouphug:

I have been working on this. It doesn't look like I've gotten much further, but I've probably put another 10 hours into this. Its really slow going, but I think its coming along nicely. I'm not sure how I'm going to approach his hat or his jacket, but I'll come up with something hopefully. Thank you again!

04-18-2011, 01:21 AM
It certainly is coming along niuce Suzin. Looking forward to more updates

04-18-2011, 01:39 AM
Snuzy...I can see the character slowly creeping into his face...looking very good!

04-18-2011, 07:59 AM
I really think this is stunning. There'll be a lot of tears when this is finished and handed over.

04-18-2011, 09:41 AM
This is an amazing job and such a nice thing for you to do. It will be a treasure to her for sure.

04-18-2011, 12:16 PM
FAB U LUS portrait! What a story...so sad. Your going to really help these people a lot by doing this for them. Such a beautiful gesture! :grouphug:

And here I thought I thanked everyone! My bad! Thank you again for your support. This is coming along slowly but surely. His face is pretty much done, and now I'm just having fun rendering some different textures. The hat will the scariest since there is some lettering on the top I haven't figured out how I'm going to do yet. I will not be scratching this to the edges, but will probably end up matting it in a little bit. I need to have it done by Monday I think....so pressure is onnnn.

05-11-2011, 12:49 AM
Now this will be a very cherished gift. Wonderful job...

05-11-2011, 01:08 AM
Snuzy, that is flat out awesome work. What a sweetheart and wonderful artist you are.

05-11-2011, 02:21 AM
YOu are going to pull this off no problem snuzy, great work.

05-11-2011, 03:15 AM
This is coming along very nicely Susan, loving the character that is being revealed...and the zip!
Sad story behind it all but this will be treasured for sure... :)

05-11-2011, 04:13 AM
Love his face...it has so much character! I can't speak to likeness but you captured the elderly look of him and did a wonderful job of scratching his eyes and wrinkles especially under the chin/neck area. I'm not sure about the one nostril...it looks rather odd, but maybe his is a bit odd? It seems a bit too light at the entrance and in.... and the opening looks a bit irregular.

You're doing a really fine job with this.

05-11-2011, 08:27 AM
This is a sentimental offering , will be lovingly cherished by the family.
Good start .

05-11-2011, 08:39 AM
Nice update. I notice you changed the eyes (at least the one that was done earlier), was there a reason for that?

05-11-2011, 01:49 PM
This is looking very good Susan, I will be looking forward to the next update.

Thanks for the update! I agree with Lorna about the nostril and I would like to add that the nose looks outlined. Is that because you are not finished?
It is a great portrait, it has life!

This is awesome. My suggestion for your friend: It comes from my heart. Someday pay it forward from your heart.

Well apparently I suck. I never thanked any of you since my last post two months ago, so thank you all! And thank you again for your patience. I was really busy my last few weeks of college, and once I graduated I couldn't seem to muster up any enthusiasm to scratch on what little free time I had. Finally though the deadline loomed at thus...Dave has been FINISHED. Jackie loved it (although she said he's still smiling too much  ), and I'm happy with how he turned out. I didn't take it the the edges since I planned on matting it down to 8x10 (its 9x12) anyways. I hid his name, her name, their last name, and my signature in the piece. I feel like I've done every single texture in the world, and I even used some pencil to do some shading on the logo on the hat. I miss doing animals. Hopefully I can finish some pieces and post some stuff again. I know I've missed you all!

07-20-2011, 03:19 AM
Oh Susan...I love Harry! What a gorgeous job you've done with him...even if he's smiling too much  :wink2:...all those textures are really great...love the zippers! Well done on all of it!

07-20-2011, 06:15 AM
I was thinking of you today. I thought "damn, my wifey has gone awol"! Good to see you back and well done on the graduation.

The portrait is brilliant. I wonder where the hidden names are. Microscope time!

Thank you everyone! And I'm glad I haven't been forgotten (especially by my hubby :wink2: ) As requested here are some closeups of the hidden names.

My signature is on the color of the sweater, his name is in the shadows of jacket in the upper rightish side.

Jackie's name in the inside of the jacket.

And Morgon on the stitching of the hat.

Really thank you again. My --TEMPORARY- summer job is at a call center, and I'm allowed to scratch when I'm not on a call...so I'll be doing more work for sure.

07-21-2011, 12:46 AM
Sensational. I love the names!!

07-21-2011, 02:42 AM
The facial expression is striking . The work on the jacket is excellent

A very nice piece, indeed!!! Love the names; thanks for showing them to us.

07-21-2011, 12:27 PM
Looks great Suzy. I love all the textures. Wow too much smiling I don't think so. I guess you'd have to make him cranky then. Did you use the squiggle method on the face?

Snuzin Susan
07-21-2011, 11:26 PM
Thanks so much again everyone! It really means a lot!

Angela-I used more of a curved feathering technique, with a little bit more curve on the neck, but not quite a squiggle. I'm pretty sure I squiggled on the sweater, but that was months ago and I've forgotten (lol).

07-22-2011, 03:29 AM
Well done, Susan! Of course Jackie was happy with it, even if he IS smiling too much. It's a wonderful tribute

07-22-2011, 08:27 AM
Wonderful finish and lovin the hidden names.

07-22-2011, 11:07 PM
