View Full Version : Lost my marbles FINISHED

04-10-2011, 05:24 AM
Not ready to go back to Emilia just yet, so I started a new one. It's 11X14 and this is about 4 inches of the board.:D From my own reference. Sorry it's blurry...it's a scan and of course the board doesn't fit. When I'm further along I'll take photos.

Interesting start Lorna. Pulling up a chair.

Hey! I think that's one of mine! Pulling up a chair.

04-10-2011, 04:22 PM
@ Patrick and Rod! Thanks for tuning in to the rest of you. No update yet, but I'll be working on it today...it's snowing!:(

04-10-2011, 04:53 PM
This will be fun to watch. Having already lost my marbles I should get in the show for free.:wink2

04-11-2011, 11:04 AM
Love the marble, anxious to see where this is going!!

04-11-2011, 01:04 PM
Keeping us guessing. I see a marble. :)

04-11-2011, 04:40 PM
Yes, very intriguing. Can't wait to see it progress in Lorna style.

04-11-2011, 04:52 PM

Thanks for joining in Greg, Angela, Lynn and Rick...I'm losing more everyday!

This is one of those pieces that has me asking "What the he** was I thinking!" But it's also the first one in a long time that has me excited...I just hope I can finish it like I see it with my minds eye. It's a challenge that's going to take some time to complete...not as long as one of Pamela's though.:D Hope you all have lots of patience.

Here's where I am so far...worked on it about 9hours yesterday and last night...I wouldn't call any area finished. So far I've used a scalpel and the small fg brush.

Here it is in the grand scheme of things...whole board.

Harry Seymour
04-11-2011, 04:55 PM
Simply marvelous but still can't figure out where you are going with it. Nevertheless it is clearly going to be a stunner.

04-11-2011, 04:59 PM
You have, indeed ...<insert the title here.

04-11-2011, 05:16 PM
Thank you Harry and Rod...all will be revealed eventually!:wink2: :D

04-11-2011, 06:43 PM
Nice going Lorna, even with the whole bord pic I still can't figure out what is going on, though I do detect some chromy bits in there.
The suspense...............

04-11-2011, 06:52 PM
hehehe...I'm pulling a Diana.

04-11-2011, 08:05 PM
I guess we'll see you in a year when this is finished  Looks like a huge undertaking

04-11-2011, 09:14 PM
Sooo, it's a metal cup on its side? With reflections of the marbles and part of a room in it?? Love, love, love it! And you have indeed lost your marbles, but that's perfectly ok . . . this piece will rock!

04-11-2011, 11:43 PM
I love a surprise and I think this is going to be a good one. You all are teaching me that any darn thing can be a great subject for scratchart.

04-12-2011, 11:13 AM
I know that this is gonna be brilliant Lorna!! I would love to know how you go about choosing a reference?:)

Diana Lee
04-12-2011, 12:18 PM
OMG!
This is just too cool! I LOVE the light reflection on the cloth of the unfinshed marble! You did it again! Are you planning on coloring any of this?

04-13-2011, 06:54 AM
Thanks again everyone! I've been working for the last several hours and will have an update during the day when I can take a photo.

Gee Patrick...I sure hope not...actually I want to enter it in an exhibition and the deadline if June 3rd.

Irfan...this is from my own photo. I just played around setting up the still life and took pictures from different angles until I got one I liked. I think this is one of my more ambitious ones...I just hope I can pull it off!

Diana, thank you! I've toyed with the idea of color...we'll see how it goes.

04-13-2011, 08:37 AM
It is seems to be a great study of reflections . Waiting for updates

04-13-2011, 10:29 AM
The marble is incredible, Lorna! You can look right through it and see all of its interior details.

04-13-2011, 04:16 PM

Thank you Venkat and Brett...that's what I was aiming for!:)

As mentioned I got another 6-7 hrs in yesterday. Still just using the scalpel and fb brush.
Not as crisp as I'd like...

04-13-2011, 04:33 PM
...I just hope I can pull it off!

I think you're the only one who's worried about that, Lorna.
More excellent progress!

04-13-2011, 04:43 PM
Lorna, this is looking great. I love the marbles. I'll be watching and hoping to figure out what it is.

04-13-2011, 05:31 PM

I'm not accustomed to loving something without knowing what it is-nevertheless.........

04-13-2011, 09:14 PM
It's going to be stunning! Heck, it already is!

04-13-2011, 09:35 PM
Cmon Lorna. Hurry up and finish it! I want to see the final picture. Looking awesome with those tom bowlers. I loved playing marbles with my brother when I was a tot. Now, I have lost my marbles!!

04-13-2011, 09:48 PM
Oh my heavens - fabulous marbles. I can't figure the rest, but nice scratching. You have such even light scratches. Perfection already.

04-13-2011, 10:44 PM
If I stare at it long enough, will I figure it out....noooooo. Love those marbles.

04-14-2011, 04:44 AM
Harry, Patrick, Lesley, Lynn and Karen, thank you! I'm really enjoying this one!

More of an update tomorrow, if I have time before I go to work at the artisan center.

Diane Cutter
04-14-2011, 09:14 AM
I love how you give us teasers, just showing the finished bits before letting us see the immense size of the board. I have no doubts this will be stunning...

04-14-2011, 06:36 PM
Thanks for the info Lorna!

I am really excited to see it finished!

04-15-2011, 02:17 PM
Update...it should be coming a little bit clearer now.

Diane and Irfan, thank you!

Still lots to go.

04-15-2011, 02:41 PM
Lorna, this is wonderful. I love how the marbles that are reflected in the pitcher reflect back onto the cylinder (can, jar, ???). The light on the cloth and inside the cylinder is beautiful. Great shadows and reflections of the marbles on the cloth. This is definitely an interesting composition all about reflections. I'm studying those super fine scratches and am very impressed. Lovely, creative work.

Harry Seymour
04-15-2011, 07:48 PM
Still wonderful and still puzzled about what it is. I'm slow but patient enough to enjoy the unfolding of a masterpiece.

Diana Lee
04-15-2011, 08:01 PM
You are amazing! The last time I tried reflections of reflections in reflections it gave me a headache!
This is wonderful!

04-16-2011, 03:03 AM
Sammy...thank you! It's a silver/mirrored glass laying on it's side. I'll show you a pic later.

Harry, Thank you, you're very kind.:)

Diana...it's giving me a headache, too! Thank you!

04-16-2011, 03:45 AM
Lorna, you told us too soon, here I was thinking that it was... an upside down vacuum cleaner. :D

04-17-2011, 04:36 AM
Gail...it's not done, yet!:wink2: :D

04-17-2011, 06:55 AM
OK, I'm here, :D no didn't lurk with this one Lorna, and all I can say, is " Good God Woman" are you crazy!!! how are your eyes. ;) :D
I'm dizzy just looking at all the reflections. Wonderful setup, I don't know how you do it, but you're doing it, this is incredible, I've never seen work like this before.
Yes, you can pull it off, you already are my friend. Can't wait for the finish. I'll be here. Thanks for the link. Shar.....

04-17-2011, 09:10 AM
That is incredible! I love the reflections, but especially the light going through the marbles. Fantastic!

04-18-2011, 05:31 PM
How is it?...... doing scratchboard wearing a straight jacket.

04-18-2011, 06:49 PM
Update. Now you should be able to tell what's coming. :D

Sharron...thanks for dropping in...I'm glad you like it!

Lynn...Thank you!

Rod...you should know!

Whole board...

Closeup...I see a couple of small fixes to do here.

04-18-2011, 07:55 PM
looking great! I recognise the silver pitcher from some of your other still life set ups.

04-18-2011, 07:55 PM
Lorna am just gonna go ahead and say it...

You truly have lost your marbles!!:D

It is such a riveting piece!! It is absolutely excellent!!

04-18-2011, 08:00 PM
Cathy...Thank you...that was a funny typo! Nope, this is a different one.

Irfan...yup, I think I have!:D Thank you!

Harry Seymour
04-18-2011, 08:05 PM
Lorna, this is so you and sooooooo goooooooood.

04-18-2011, 08:16 PM
lol.... thought I caught it before you saw ;)

04-18-2011, 08:17 PM
OMG Lorna. I just got a glimpse of that lace. Such tiny tiny scratches. Don't know how you do it.

While I am here, can I ask you if you ever get dodgy new blades in your fresh pack. I swear I have bought some exacto blades and the first one in the pack was good, but it seems the next 5 are blunt as and don't seem to scratch at all unless you put pressure on them. Could it be a problem with some of the boards. This is a new board I am using and I am very careful about getting fingermarks on it. Just thought I would ask you as you seem to go through some many of them. You'd have to be the expert.

Can't wait to see the still life finished.

04-18-2011, 08:22 PM
Stunning Lorna...

04-18-2011, 08:27 PM
What an amazing piece! Such intricate detail and simply beautiful.

I do find some variations both within boards and also scalpels/exactos. Some boards seem to scratch like butter and others seem to require a bit more pressure. And I have also put on a totally new blade and had issues where it doesn't seem sharp. Could be either situation.

04-18-2011, 09:09 PM
Harry, Lesley, Rod and Diane....thank you so much, I appreciate it!:)

Lesley...Cathy answered just as I would have...sometimes it's the board and sometimes it's the blade.
I rarely use xactos but have found some duds with the scalpels, too and find myself wondering what would a doctor do!

04-18-2011, 09:24 PM
Lorna, I am speechless and very impressed. This is fabulous. And, yes, I agree that you've lost your marbles. Love the reflected lace in the marble and, as already mentioned, the lace is awesome. Great piece! Excellent work!
You've set the bar really high for us beginners. I guess we just need to acquire the years of experience you've had.

04-18-2011, 09:30 PM
HOLY EXPLETIVE! Dang Lorna........
I should be used to seeing you work your magic.....
But I'm Not!
DAMN.....LOVE IT!!!!!!

04-18-2011, 10:07 PM
Lorna, you and Sandra are obviously vying to be the one to do the most complicated doily work

04-18-2011, 10:59 PM
Yes, what were you thinking?? Such a hard, tricky, intricate still life. No one in their right mind would try. :) But you have it looking so good! Not a surprise with your talented hand and eye controlling the blade.

04-19-2011, 02:37 AM
Just fantastic work Lorna, no other words come to mind right now, WOW

04-25-2011, 07:09 PM
Update...well one week, the flu and a cold later, I'm on the mend and I think I finished this...I'll leave for a few days and see if anything pops out but for this thread I'll call it finished.

In the pics I've included the 'silver' I used in my set up...it might surprise you. Also some close-ups...if there is anything else you want to see closer, let me know.

Full board

A lot closer

with a water bottle for scale. This corner is one of the spots I usually use for still life setups because of the window right there.

04-25-2011, 07:24 PM
Geez Lorna. It's better than a photograph. I'm still in awe of that doily. I can feel the texture of it through my screen. So beautiful and delicate.

04-25-2011, 07:37 PM
Too awesome Lorna!!! All the textures are brilliant from the metal pitcher to the doily! Those reflections are stunning too!! Love, love it!:D

04-25-2011, 08:26 PM
WOW Lorna - this is incredible!!! You never cease to amaze   Brilliant!

04-25-2011, 08:31 PM
This is so beautiful and those reflections are incredible. Super, super fantastic job...

04-25-2011, 08:44 PM
Thank you Lesley, Irfan, Jenny and Diane! I appreciate it!:)

I wish that the photo showed it better...it's looking kinda blotchy on here and in real life it isn't.:(

04-25-2011, 08:56 PM
I have a NEW favorite Scratchboard piece...... This is it! Nuf said....

04-25-2011, 09:05 PM
Lorna--you never fail to amaze with your extraordinary talent. This is WONDERFUL.

04-25-2011, 09:36 PM
Awww Rod and Harry...you sure know how to make a gal feel good! Thank you so much.:)

04-25-2011, 10:26 PM
Wow, Lorna...this is amazing. I feel as if I could see myself in the reflection of the water pitcher.

04-25-2011, 10:53 PM
That certainly was worth the wait. Great job!!! No wonder you like scratchboard so much as no other art form would allow you such intricate detail.

04-26-2011, 12:09 AM
Thank you Fay and Liz!

Yes, Fay...that is one of the reasons I love scratch.:D

04-26-2011, 01:05 AM
Extraordinary, Lorna! Looks like you captured every stitch of the lace!

Would you mind posting an extreme close-up of the area where the fabric/lace transitions from the top of the table to where it's hanging down? I'm fascinated by the way it's darker where it's in shadow in the front. Thanks!

04-26-2011, 01:49 AM
Thank you and is this what you meant??

04-26-2011, 01:52 AM
Yep, that's it. Cool, and thanks :)

04-26-2011, 04:13 AM
What an amazing close up, do you use a rotating table top to work on? Incomparable work Lorna.

04-26-2011, 04:52 AM
You're welcome Ann!

Thank you Mark...I have a drafting table...I keep it at a slight angle and have room to turn the smaller boards (this was 11X14). With bigger boards it gets a little tricky trying to turn it, but it works. :D

04-26-2011, 07:49 AM
In the early stages I mentioned it as a study in Reflections . It is more than that. I must add Textures and light and shade to that. A brilliant display of technical skill.

04-26-2011, 09:18 AM
Just AWESOME Lorna.

04-26-2011, 10:45 AM
Wow Lorna, amazing work as always. I so enjoy your threads. Thank you for the closeups too.

04-26-2011, 06:20 PM
Venkat, Judy and Lynn...I really appreciate your kind words...Thank you!:)

04-26-2011, 07:13 PM
Probably wondering why I haven't said anything since you finished this ---- hard to say anything!!!!! Truly amazing work Lorna!!

Diana Lee
04-26-2011, 07:40 PM
I'm with Patrick, I'm wordless. This is one of those pieces where I wish we could have put an odometer on your hand that would count every stroke!

04-26-2011, 07:51 PM
Thank you and is this what you meant??

NO NO NO Lorna  she meant of the art work...not a pic of the doilies...silly girl :wink2:

04-26-2011, 09:18 PM
Lorna.... the lil tiny wrinkles where the thread must be bunching up the fabric a TINY bit....whoa!

04-27-2011, 12:19 AM
Patrick...thanks you! You can mark it finished when you have a chance.
Diana...that would be interesting...I wouldn't mind knowing myself!:D Thank you!
Pamela...thank you...I think?:D hehehe
Rod...thanks for coming back for another look.:)

04-27-2011, 12:42 AM
I've been so busy with preparing for art fairs so I haven't kept up with everyone's work and boy am I missing out!

Lorna, this is just awesome! I have a pile of marbles in my studio that I've always wanted to use but just haven't come up with anything yet. Now you've inspired me to think about them again. You've done a fantastic job!!

04-27-2011, 03:51 AM
Thank you Sandra! I can't wait to see what you do with the marbles!:) I want to do another someday, too.

04-27-2011, 07:38 AM
Sandra.....I thought you had already lost yours,as well?........ wait, you said you had marbles ....you didn't say they were YOURS. That explains it.....

04-27-2011, 06:02 PM
I can't believe that I missed the finished piece until now. This really is INCREDIBLE, Lorna. Everything is so smooth! The individual scratches are so fine that they don't even appear to be scratches. Wow!

04-27-2011, 06:06 PM
Thank you Brett!:) It was both a challenge and a pleasure to do.

04-28-2011, 11:11 PM

04-29-2011, 12:23 AM
Lorna, That's what I get for being gone for so long, I miss a truly masterful work such as this. I am absolutely amazed at your skills and your patience. You definitely don't make it easy on yourself.

Lorna, beautiful and fun piece. Thanks for the close ups. They reveal just how exquisite your fine scratching is. I love the lace, the reflections and the sheen of the silver. Great work of art!
